INTRODUCTION

The history of use of plants and animals as asource of medicine dates back perhaps to the or-igin of human race. The Vedic literature indicatesthat man might have learnt the medicinal use ofplants from the animals, those who possess theinherent capacity to recognise the medicinalplants from the nature [Raghunathan,1987].This indicates that the very concept of ethno-medicine/botany is a Vedic origin. But, howeverthe official recognition of ethnobotany as a sci-ence was first coined by Harsh burger in 1895 topoint out the plants that are used by the aborig-inals.

In India about 16,000 flowering plants knownto occur, out of which 3,000 are recognized asused in ethnomedicine or folk medicine based onoral information from generation to generation.Out of the above 1500 plants are used in orga-nized systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Unaniand Siddha and 700 have been investigated phar-macologically and chemically and their active prin-ciples are used in modern medicine system. It isobvious that the folk medicines are the originalsource that slowly entered to the organized sys-tems like Ayurveda etc. and finally investigatedfrom a closure point of view to be recognisedamong the modern medicines [Ved Prakash, 1998].

The tribal situation of India has been as-sessed in terms of distribution of the people intothe following 6 distinct zones, namely [I] North-Western India, [ii] Middle India, [iii] Western In-dia, [iv] Southern India, [v] North-eastern Indiaand [vi] Island territories of India. The Orissa statecomes under the middle India zone along withthe other states like Bihar, M.P.and West Bengal. This zone constitutes the major tribal populationof India which includes about 65 tribes [Dan-da,1996]. As per the 1981 census the differentscheduled tribes mentioned for Orissa is about62 which includes the different subgroups of thetribals found in the state. Much of the ethnome-dicinal knowledge spread among the common men

and tribals of Orissa is recovered and publishedfrom time to time, but in sporadic form. The presentwork is an attempt to compile a list of indigenousplants used by the rural and tribal people Orissastate, India.

ENUMERATION

The plants are tabulated alphabetically bytheir botanical names, family, vernacular, tribe, locality, the part used for the medicine and briefdescription of the procedure of use. [Table1] Thereferences, for each report, are also presented inthe table.

DISCUSSION

The review reports ethnomedicinal use of 421numbers of plants from Orissa state by about 24tribal communities from 11 undivided districts.Out of the above 23 plants are reported 5 times ormore, in which Andrographis paniculata Nees.and Asparagus recemosus Willd. -10 times,Hemidesmus indicus [L.] R.Br. –9, Achyranthesaspera L.-8, Alstonia scholaris[L.] Rr.Br. ,Calot-ropis gigantea [L.] R.Br. ex Ait. , Oroxylum indi-cum [L.] Vent. and Tridax procumbens L.-7 timeseach.

The whole report covers various ethnomedi-cines for about 166 diseases out of which reportfor Diarrhoea is 67, Dysentery -50,Reumatism -30, Fever -28, Skin infection -25, Toothache -23,Cough & cold -21, Headache -21, Wound -21,Antidote -19, Boils -17,Bleeding piles -15, Body-ache -14, Eye complaints -14, Leucorrhoea -14,Stomach disorder -14, Malaria -12 times etc. . Inthis paper reports for Diarrhoea and Dysenterytops the list as reported earlier that Orissa is aDiarrhoea dominating region [Bhasin, 1994] andwe have reported new cases of ethnomedicinefor Diarrhoeal diseases from Ganjam and Phubanidistricts of Orissa [Mohanty etal 1996] and a re-cent review on the whole country basis [Mohan-ty etal, 1998].
