INSTALLATION ELECTRICAL CONNECTION

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS 115 Volts A C

The refrigerators outlined hereon have been de-sign certified under ANS Z 21.19 Refrigeratorsby the American Gas Association for installationin a mobile home or recreational vehicle and areapproved by the Canadian Gas Association. Thecertifications are, however, contingent on theinstallation being made in accordance with thefollowing instructions.

The installation must in the USA conform with:

The refrigerator is equipped with a threeprong (grounded) plug for protection againstshock hazard and should be plugged directlyinto a properly grounded three prong recept-acle. Do not cut or remove the groundingprong from this plug. The cord should berouted to avoid coming in contact with theburner cover, flue cover or other hot com-ponents.

12 Volts VDC optional for certain models1. National Fuel Gas Code Z223.1-19742. Mobile Homes A119.1-19723. Recreational Vehicles A119.2-1970

The unit must be electrically grounded in accor-dance with the National Electrical Code ANSI, CI-1968, when installed if an external alternatingcurrent electrical source is utilized.

4. Any applicable local code

On "Tri-Pover units there is an additionalterminal block marked "12 V". The refrigera-tor must be connected to the battery circuitwith two wires of adequate capacity to avoidvoltage drop. The wire gage should be chosenwith consideration to the wire length inaccordance with the following tabel: The 12 Vcircuit must be fused with an appropriatefuse.

Ventilation

The installation shall be made in such a manneras to separate the combustion system from theliving space of the mobile home or recreationalvehicle. Openings for air supply or for ventingof combustion products shall have a minimum di-mension of not less than l/4 inch.

14 1012 1710 278 436 694 110

Proper installation requires one lower fresh airintake and one upper exhaust vent. The ventila-tion kits shown in this instruction booklet havebeen certified for use with the refrigerator mo-dels listed in the tables. The ventilation kitsmust be installed and used without modification. An opening towards the outside at floor level inthe refrigerator compartment must be provided forventilation of heavier-than-air fuel gases. Thelower vent of the recommended kits is providedwith proper size opening. For ready serviceability of the burner and con-trol manifold parts of the refrigerator the lowerside vent is fitted with a lift-out panel whichprovides an adequate access opening.

Do not use the body or chassis of thevehicle as a substitute for either of the twoconductors. No other electrical equipmentor lighting should be connected to the re-frigerator circuit. The refrigerator will drawfrom l0-21 Amps at 12 Volt depending on model.

CAUTION

Do not operate the refrigerator on 12 Volt whenthe vehicle is parked. You will run out ofbattery in a rather short time.

GAS CONNECTION

Hook-up to the gas supply line is accomplish-ed at the manual gas valve, which is furnish-ed with a 3/8" SAE (UNF 5/8"-18) male flareconnection. All completed connections shouldbe checked for leaks with soapy water. The gas supply system must incorporate apressure regulator to maintain a supply pres-sure of not more than 11 inches water gage. If possible the installation of a 12 Voltoperated refrigerator should be completed witha relay mounted either in the car or in therecreational vehicle (see Fig. 1). This relaywill automatically cut out the refrigeratorwhen the car motor is stopped.

SPECIAL HINTS

The refrigerator must be installed in a sub-stantial enclosure and must be level. A spiritlevel is supplied with each refrigerator andby placing it in the freezer compartment onecan level the refrigerator both ways front toback and side to side. When installing the re-frigerator in the enclosure care should betaken to ensure a complete sealing between thefront frame of the refrigerator and the top, sides and bottom of the enclosure. For thispurpose a length of sealing strip is applied to the rear surfaces of the front frame.A sealing strip should also be applied to theforemost floor of the enclosure as shown inFig. 2.

Be careful not to damage the sealing stripapplied to the floor of the enclosure when therefrigerator must be blocked. The heat producedat the rear of the refrigerator will otherwisebecome trapped in this space making the top ofthe refrigerator hot and reducing the effi-ciency of the refrigerator.

CERTIFIED INSTALLATION

Certified installations require one roof ventand one lower side vent or as optional oneupper vent and one lower side vent. The twoalternatives are provided for by using thedifferent kits listed in the Appendix.

For further information contact your dealeror distributor.

METHODS OF INSTALLATION

The methods of installation are shown infigures 3 and 4. It is essential that allmaximum or minimum dimensions are strictlymaintained as the performance of the refrige-rator is dependent on an adequate flow ofair over the rear of the refrigerator.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

INSTALLATION OF THE REFRIGERATOR IN A VEHICLE

The refrigerator must be installed on a solidfloor and must be level. With the vehicle care-fully leveled the refrigerator should level bothways in the freezer compartment.Free air circulation over the fins of the coolingunit is essential. Clearances around the refrige-rator should be in accordance with the labelattached to the rear plate of the refrigerator. In case detailed instructions on the installationand connection to the gas supply are required, contact your dealer or distributor.

Leveling

In the boiler ammonia vapor is distilled from anammonia-water mixture and carried to the finnedcondenser, where it liquifies. The liquid flowsto the evaporator, where it creates cold byevaporating into a circulating flow of hydrogengas. If the evaporator coil is not level theliquid readily accumulates, forming pocketswhich can impair the gas circulation or evenblock it, in which case, of course, the coolingwill stop. When the recreational vehicle is stationary itmust be leveled to be comfortable to live in. Ifthe refrigerator is properly installed, i e thefreezer shelf parallel to the floor, the refrige-rator will then also perform well.A bubble level should be placed on the freezershelf. When the vehicle is on tow, the continuousrolling and pitching movement will not affectthe refrigerator as long as the movement passeseither side of level, but when the trailer istemporarily parked this sensitivity of the re-frigerator should be remembered. So, once more, before you start the refrigerator, make sureit is level.

HOW TO START THE REFRIGERATOR.

4. After the gas is lit keep the button C pushedfor 10 seconds. Release the button and checkthrough the reflector that the burner flamestays burning. If not repeat the lighting pro-cedure.

NOTE: After a replacement of the gas con-tainer or a long shut off period the gasline is likely to be filled with air. Insuch a case the lighting procedure hasto be repeated until the air is pushedout of the line and the gas has reachedthe burner.

Flame Blow Out

If trouble is encountered with the flame blowingout under specially windy conditions, try toavoid the wind blowing against the wall wherevent outlets are located. If the trouble persists, set the thermostat to MAX. This later measurecan of course only be temporary such as when thevehicle is on tow, for after a day or so at thissetting the foodstuffs in the cabinet will freeze.

Electric Operation (Fig. 7)

Check that the attachment plug is correctlyconnected to the mains supply. When the re-frigerator is equipped also for 12 Volts D Coperation the low voltage connection is madeat the marked terminals at the rear of the re-frigerator.Turn the knob A to desired position for electricoperation.Turn the thermostat knob B to setting 4.

HOW TO USE THE REFRIGERATOR

Food Storage Compartment

The food storage compartment is completely closedand unventilated, which is necessary to maintainthe required low temperature for food storage.Consequently foods having a strong odor or liableto absorb odors should be covered. Vegetables, salads etc. should be covered to retain theircrispness. The coldest positions in the refrige-rators are underneath the cooling evaporator andat the bottom of the refrigerator, and the leastcold positions are on the upper door shelves. Thisshould be considered when different types of foodare placed in the refrigerator.

Frozen Food Storage Compartment

be stored in the frozen food storage compartment. They can then be stored about three times aslong as in the fresh food storage compartment. To prevent drying out, keep food in covereddishes, in plastic bags or wrapped in aluminumfoil.

CAUTION

Do not store explosive substances in the re-frigerator, such as cigarette lighter gas, petrol, ether or the like.

Ice Making

Ice cubes can be made in the ice trays whichshould be filled with water to within l/4"(5 nun) from the top. To release the ice cubesseize the tray with both hands and twist thetray. Cubes not required should preferablybe replaced in the tray. Refill the tray withwater and replace the tray on the freezershelf.Ice making is accelerated if the thermostatknob is turned to setting "MAX". It is a goodidea to do this a few hours before an anti-cipated need for ice but be sure to turn theknob back to normal setting when the ice isformed or the foodstuffs in the cabinet maybecome frozen hard.

Defrosting

Some refrigerator models are equipped with anautomatic defrosting device incorporated withthe cooling unit. This device makes a quickdefrost of the finned evaporator section aboutonce a day without affecting the frozen foodstorage compartment or the frozen foods containedin. When the frozen food storage 'compartment iscovered with frost the refrigerator must be shutdown temporarily till the frost is melted. Beforethe refrigerator is restarted the compartmentshould be dried, the ice trays washed and re-filled with fresh water. When the frost on the finned evaporator sectionhas melted, water will be collected in the driptray. The drip tray should be emptied at regularintervals. Some refrigerators without the automatic de-frosting device should be defrosted regularly'by turning off the refrigerator. Empty the re-frigerator leaving the drip tray under the finnedevaporator and the cabinet and freezer doorsopen. If desired, defrosting may be speeded upby filling the ice tray with hot water andplacing it in the freezer. When all frost is melted, empty the drip tray anddry the interior of the refrigerator with aclean cloth.Replace the drip tray and ice tray, replace allfood stuffs and set the thermostat to "MAX" fora few hours. Then reset the thermostat knob toits normal position.

To Shut Down the Refrigerator

To shut down the refrigerator temporarily setthe thermostat to off and turn off the gas tap.If the cabinet is not in operation over a period

of weeks, it should be emptied and cleaned andthe door left ajar. The ice trays should alsobe dried and kept outside the cabinet.

Cleaning

To clean the interior lining of the refrigeratoruse lukewarm weak soda solution. The evaporator, ice trays and shelves must, however, be cleanedwith warm water only. Never use strong chemicalsor abrasives to clean these parts or the pro-tective surface will be spoiled. It is importantalways to keep the refrigerator clean.

Periodic maintenance

NOTE: Before working on the refrigerator, makesure that 110 V A. C. and optional 12 VD.C.leads are disconnected.

Once or twice a year depending on use, it isnecessary to clean and adjust the burner assembly.Proceed as follows:

1.

OPERATION ANALYSIS FOR COOLING UNIT

It is obviously important that all external fac-tors affecting the unit should be checked properlybefore a unit is condemned as faulty and that empha-sis has been placed upon the necessity for correctinstallation, upright refrigerator, correct heat in-put, baffle position, etc. Check the size and thewattage of the electric heater and make sure thatthe heater element is inserted to its full lengthin its pocket. If the electric heater is only part-ly inserted, the heat distribution will be incorrect, causing an excessive vaporizing of the ammonia withinthe boiler when operating on electricity. The samesymptom can show up with too much or too little

unit or refrigerator complete whenever possible andto allow sufficient time to- cool down the unit. Turnthe unit or refrigerator upside down several times,so that the liquid in the absorber vessel can bemixed with the liquid in the boiler. This procedurewill restore the liquid balance to the unit.

The temperatures on various parts of a unit varycontinuously when it is operating on thermostaticcontrol and it is impossible to base a judgment onthe symptoms given unless the refrigerator has beenoperating continuously on fully correct heat inputfor at least 5 hours, and preferably 12 hours, priorto examination. In many cases this can be arrangedby a telephone call to the customer, asking him toswitch the thermostat to "MAX" on the day before the

heat input either on electric or on gas operation inspection call. If after 12 hours' operation onand also if the refrigerator had been operating in "MAX" the performance is satisfactory, the unit isan off-level position or with inadequate ventila- not at fault unless the complaint is one of varyingtion. or intermittent performance.
