Municipal Agent Notes By John Sullivan

Successful aging is within your grasp, if you follow these tips from the Association of Retired Americans (ARA) and

the National Institute on Aging (NIA)

Top Ten Tips for Aging Successfully 1. Stay physically active. 2. Eat a balanced diet. 3. Don’t smoke—if you still do, it’s never too late to quit. 4. If you drink, drink moderately one alcoholic drink a day

doesn't hurt, and may even reduce your chances of heart disease. But alcohol abuse can lead to disability and ear-ly death.

5. Avoid obesity. Being significantly overweight is associ-ated with a variety of bad healthy outcomes including heart disease and diabetes.

6. Protect your vision and hearing. Your eyes and ears are critical to functions such as driving and reading. They also help you remain engaged in conversations and rela-tionships.

7. Get regular health care and vaccinations. You can pre-vent many problems before they require more serious treatment.

8. Practice safety habits at home to prevent falls and frac-tures. Always wear your seatbelt when traveling by car.

9. Stay active in professional, community or other activi-ties. Maintain a vibrant social network and strong per-sonal relationships. It’s good for your health and for how you experience your later years.

10. Keep a positive attitude toward life Do things that make you happy

Best regards, John

DRINK WATER DAILY!!!

It’s summertime! We all need to drink MORE water daily! Here are a few helpful hints:

Drink a glass first thing every morning Keep a water bottle with you at all times Eat more fruits & veggies Drink a glass of water before you eat Set a reminder Replace soda, juice & coffee with water Finish your day with a glass of water

Dear Readers,

It’s hard to believe August 2018 is already here. Not being a summer person it was great to see the end of July!! That heat wave did a number on me. I just couldn't get out of my own way. Have any of you ev-er felt like that? Tired, sad, grumpy, nothing made you happy, not even a Friendly's hot fudge sundae. I still prefer a cold day all bundled up, a brisk walk around the block, runny eyes, and a red nose like Ru-dolph the Red Nose Reindeer. In my June column I asked everyone to think about 3 things they are “Thankful” for every day. I had a whole month to think about my answer and actually, it was quite diffi-cult to come up with just 3 things because first and foremost I am thankful for my whole life from the very beginning of it. My wonderful parents Anna & Anthony Basile, sharing the Christian belief with me, providing for me and my brother the means to have a good education which they both believed in over eighty years ago, a rare opportunity at that time. For the multitude of friends that have come into my life over the many years I have resided here in town. I don’t think any one of us can just leave that question to only 3 things we are thankful for everyday because, just getting up every morning, making a cup of coffee getting the daily paper can all be done in just 5 minutes, so what about the 1435 remaining minute in your day? Enjoy August!

Mary Ann Giannelli (P.S. Did you get any tomatoes yet? I have 4 already!)
