MUNICIPAL AGENT NOTES By John Sullivan
Dealing With Seasonal Affective Disorder
Norman E. Rosenthal, MD of Georgetown University’s School of Medicine is the psychiatrist who first identi-fied seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Some people experience this condition, which causes them to have depressed moods every fall and winter. Writing in Bottom Line Personal, Dr. Rosenthal lays out the latest facts on SAD and tells how to cope with it. One way is to go outside in sunlight (morning light is most effec-tive) for 30 to 60 minutes each day-even if you have to bundle up against the cold. It turns out that it isn't the sunlight that reaches our skin that wards off SAD. It’s the sunlight that reaches our eyes. Bright light triggers the release of mood-regulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin that seem to combat SAD. So you can apply an appropriate sunscreen without affecting any-thing adversely. Another option is to buy a light-therapy lamp. Most of them filter out the potentially dangerous UV rays. Select one that produces 10,000 lux (a unit of illumination) from a lit surface that meas-ure at least 12 inches by 18 inches. Lamps this size tend to remain effective over a significantly longer pe-riod of time. One example is Carex Day-Light Classic Bright Light Therapy Lamp, 10,000lux up to 12 inches away (carex.com, about $115 at amazon.com). If light alone doesn't do the trick, exercising also causes the body to release neurotransmitters. A professor at Uni-versity of Vermont has shown that cognitive behavior therapy, a form of talk therapy that modifies negative thoughts, can be helpful too. Try to avoid negative self-talk in the fall/winter. Example: You think, “I’m so lazy.” Immediately question this by recalling things you have done that weren't lazy...and then think, “Let’s see what I can do today.” If none of this works, ask your doctor about cognitive behavioral therapy with a qualified therapist; also ask about pharmaceutical treat-ments or supplements-prescription antidepressants can be effective for SAD. Best Regards, John
John’s Tip of the Month The Wellness Letter from the University of California Berkeley advises: Try pink or red grapefruit. Ounce for ounce, the pink variety has more that 40 times more beta carotene than the white grapefruit. The darker the pulp the more lycopene. This carotenoid, also plentiful in tomatoes, may lower the risk of certain cancers.

Did you know that the Senior Center has a R.O.M.E.O. Club & a J.U.L.I.E.T.
Club?? Come join in on the fun!! Call the Center @ 860-627-1425 for details
Dear Readers, A few weeks ago I was at the Senior Center and partic-ipated in a “special bingo” After all it was summer-time and the 3 H’s had got to me...hot, hazy & humid! It was a fun afternoon even though I didn't win. It started me thinking, where did BINGO originate? I decided to have my son-in-law google “Bingo”. Quite a bit of information came up, so the following is what I found: A lottery game called "Il Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia" was being played in Italy in the year 1530. By the 18th century, France added playing cards, tokens & the calling out of numbers. In 1920 Hugh J Ward introduced this game at carnivals in and around areas in Pittsburgh and W. Pennsylvania area. Edwin Lowe in 1929 a “toy merchandiser saw people eagerly play-ing a game called “BEANO” with dry beans, rubber stamp and card board sheets. Lowe took the game to his friends in NY. They enjoyed it so much he pro-duced 2 versions of the game. When they won in all their excitement they yelled out “BINGO” instead of “BEANO”! So there you have it, a short version of how “Beano-Bingo” came to be. Just Google Bingo for more info on this fun game! I found this to be an interesting topic and remember we’re never too old to learn something new each day. Enjoy the fall and start walking again now that the weather, we hope, will be cooler! Keep Love in your heart. Maryann Giannelli
