As most of you are aware, we will be saying farewell to two of our beloved priests this July. Pastor Tony Diaz and Fr. Paulus Marandi, will both be moving on to new assign-ments. Although we pray for them the very best, they will be terribly missed by our community and our Office family. In honor of their service to the San Gabriel Mission, our offices and ministries will be hosting a Farewell gathering on Sunday, July 1st from 4 to 8PM. We invite all of our parish-ioners to join us as we say farewell, and also to bring your favorite dessert to share.

A homily from St. Augustine in the 4th century about the nativity of

John the Baptist

The Church observes the birth of John as in some way sacred; and you will not find any other of the great men of old whose birth we cel-ebrate officially. We celebrate John’s, as we celebrate Christ’s. This point cannot be passed over in silence, and if I may not perhaps be able to explain it in the way that such an important matter deserves, it is still worth think-ing about it a little more deeply and fruitfully than usual. John is born of an old woman who is barren; Christ is born of a young woman who is a virgin. That John will be born is not believed, and his father is struck dumb; that Christ will be born is believed, and he is conceived by faith. John, it seems, has been inserted as a kind of boundary between the two Testaments, the Old and the New. That he is somehow or other a boundary is something that the Lord himself indicates when he says, The Law and the Prophets were until John. So he represents the old and heralds the new. Because he represents the old, he is born of an elderly couple; because he represents the new, he is revealed as a prophet in his mother’s womb. You will remember that, before he was born, at Mary’s arrival he leapt in his mother’s womb. Already he had been marked out there, designated before he was born; it was already shown whose forerunner he would be, even before he saw him. These are divine matters, and exceed the measure of human frailty. Finally, he is born, he receives a name, and his father’s tongue is loosed. Zachariah is struck dumb and loses his voice, until John, the Lord’s forerunner, is born and releases his voice for him. What does Zachariah’s silence mean, but that prophecy was obscure and, before the proclamation of Christ, somehow concealed and silenced? It is released and opened up by his arrival, it becomes clear when the one who was being prophesied is about to come. The re-leasing of Zachariah’s voice at the birth of John has the same significance as the tearing of the veil of the Temple at the crucifixion of Christ. If John were meant to pro-claim himself, he would not be opening Zachariah’s mouth. The tongue is released because a voice is being born – for when John was already heralding the Lord, he was asked, “Who are you?” and he replied I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. John is the voice, but the Lord in the beginning was the Word. John is a voice for a time, but Christ is the eternal Word from the beginning

La Iglesia observa el nacimiento de Juan en una forma sagrada porque no hay otro hombre más grande de quien se celebre el nacimiento

oficialmente. Celebramos el nacimiento Juan de la manera que celebramos el nacimiento de Cristo. Este punto no se puede pasar en silencio, y aunque quizás no pueda explicarlo con la importancia que merece es aun digno dedicarle tiempo en meditarlo más profundamente. Juan nace de una mujer avanzada en edad e infértil; Cris-to nace de una joven y virgen. El padre de Juan duda acerca del nacimiento de hijo Juan y es dejado mudo; María creé del nacimiento de Cristo y concibe por fe. Juan encaja en medio de dos Testamentos como un enla-ce: entre el Antiguo y el Nuevo. Aun el Señor apunta hacia este papel de Juan entre los dos testamentos cuando dice que “la Ley y los Profetas fueron hasta Juan”. Juan representa lo antiguo y anuncia lo nuevo. Representa lo antiguo en que nace de unos padres de edad avanzada; anuncia lo nuevo porque desde el vientre de su madre es revelado como profe-ta. Hemos de recordar que antes que naciera, en la visita de María a su prima Isabel, Juan salta de gozo en el vientre de madre. Desde su concepción fue designado y marcado para una misión singular; anunciar y preparar el camino para aquel que aún no concia. Todo esto son cosas divinas y es-tán por encima de nuestra fragilidad humana. Finalmente, Juan nace y recibe su nombre, entonces su padre recobra su lengua y comienza a hablar. Zacarías es castigado y queda mudo hasta el nacimiento de Juan, el precursor del Cristo, quien lo libera de su castigo y le regresa el habla. ¿Qué significa el silencio Zacarías?, sino que hasta entonces la profecía estaba muda, oculta y en silencio hasta la llegada de la proclamación de Cristo. La profecía es liberada y descubierta en la llegada de aquel de quien se profetizaba. El regreso de la voz de Zacarías tiene el mismo significado que la ruptura de la cortina del Templo en la crucifixión de Cristo. Si Juan se hubiera proclamado a si mismo entonces él no le hubiera soltado la lengua a Zaca-rías. La lengua se suelta a Zacarías porque una voz nace – porque cuando Juan anunciaba la venida del Señor, le pre-guntaban: “¿Quién eres tú?” y el decía “soy una voz que grita en el desierto.” Juan es la voz, pero el Señor desde el principio el Verbo. Juan es la voz por un tiempo, pero Cristo es el Verbo divino y eterno desde el principio.

FAITH FORMATION CORNER Use the Bible Well

There is an old saying, “Bibles that are falling apart usual-ly belong to people who aren’t.” Try these tips to get the most out of your reading. Choose a Catholic version. The New American Bible is read during Mass during mass but there are other transla-tions. Most important is having an edition you enjoy that contains all the Catholic books. (Here is a list: usccb.org/bible/approved-translations/index.cfm.) Use the aids. The Bible contains customs and terms that are foreign to us. Read the introductions and footnotes for helpful explanations. Focus on passages. The Bible will make more sense if you read the sections that are grouped together rather than sentence by sentence. Mark it up! Underline and make notes in the margins as you read to make your book more useful. This will help you remember favorite passages and words that touched you in a special way. Read aloud. The Bible began as an oral tradition. Hearing the passages read may help make them become clearer. Live it. What you read in the Bible will help you find strength to meet the challenges of life. San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Summer School Starts at Mission Elementary

Who says summer learning has to be boring?? This year Mission Elementary embarked on a sum-mer school program for students in our schools and the community at large. This week our Spar-tans danced “The 100’s Dance,” played Math board games, searched and sorted the plot structures of folklore and practice narrative writing form. We are excited to expand our learning into the sum-mer and bring excellence through joy and collaboration.
