The Knights of Columbus is an international Order of Catholic men who are called to lead with faith, pro-tect our families, serve others and defend values in a busy changing world. Our local Council, Father Thomas J. F. Ryan #5036 will be holding an Open House at 9090 Old Bustleton Pike, Phila., PA 19115, on Tuesday evening March 26 at 7:30pm. Whether you become an individual member or a member of our Council, you will find that Knights of Columbus membership brings Catholic men together in a powerful way. If you would like to join today simply go to KofC.org/joinus and enter our council #5036 for local information.

Sacred Liturgy Rev. Dennis Gill, Rector of the Cathedral, will give a lecture at Presentation BVM Church Hall on Monday, March 25 (7:00-9:00pm). He will discuss a Pastoral Letter on Sacred Music by Archbishop Alexander Sam-ple of Portland, Oregon ‘The Very Good Points and Some Weak Points.’ This presentation will make use of the letter to ‘aim high’ when it comes to sacred wor-ship. Fr. Gill’s talk is open to everyone and should be of great interest to those involved in the sacred liturgy. Includes discussion and refreshments. Third Sunday of Lent March 24, 2019

FOCUS: Jesus calls us to repent so that we might bear good fruit.

God’s ways are not our ways. In order to bear good fruit, we must allow him to shape and mold our lives. This was not a new message that Jesus shared, but an affirmation of the covenant that God made with his people from the beginning. God is faithful—and so we are called to be. When we stray and wither or produce bad fruit, we have the oppor-tunity to repent and try again.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading from Exodus, God speaks to Moses from the burn-ing bush, announcing his presence as the God of his father, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In Saint Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, he speaks of the Old Tes-tament ancestors, many with whom God was not pleased. In today’s Gospel, the crowd tells Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate mingled with their sacrifices. Jesus calls them to repentance and tells them a parable of the fig tree that produces no fruit.

REFLECTION: Are the misfortunes people experi-ence a punishment for their sins? Jesus responds, "By no means!" Still, as we have experienced, sin may have dire or fragmentary consequences on our lives, now, or in the not-too distant future.

So we ask ourselves: In light of Jesus’ call to con-sider our lives and repent of our sins, we reflect on sin’s consequences in our lives:

Are the ill effects of our sins staring us in the face?

What’s falling apart in our lives?

 What hurts?

Where do we seem stymied in our spiritual journey?

All You Called to be a Deacon? A deacon’s ministry entails proclaiming, preaching and teaching God’s Word, assisting the bishop and priest at the Liturgy, assisting at funerals, ministering to the sick and dying, leading the community in prayer and in sacramental liturgies, baptizing, witnessing marriages, and exercising administrative leadership in the Church. A permanent deacon, who may be married, is a member of the clergy and shares in the hierarchy of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. We invite Catholic men (along with their wives, if mar-ried) between the ages of 29 and 55 who would like to discern a call to serve Jesus Christ to attend an infor-mation night. Thursday, April 11 (7:00-9:00pm) St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Vianney Auditorium 100 E. Wynnewood R., Wynnewood, PA 19096 Registration is required by emailing Laura Nimmons at [email protected].

The Annunciation, also referred to as the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Annunciation of Our Lady, or the Annun-ciation of the Lord, is the Catholic celebration of the announce-ment by the Archangel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, marking His Incarnation. Gabriel told Mary to name her son Yeshua, meaning "YHWH is salvation". On Monday, March 25 we celebrate this Feast Day.

Catholic Charities Story As always we encourage you to share the stories of our beneficiaries and the wonderful work that is being done in our communities due to all who chose to give to the Catholic Charities Appeal. Women of Hope is part of Catholic Social Services housing and homeless services. They respond to the growing problem of homeless women with mental ill-ness. Today 46 women reside at two facilities. Here is a testimonial from one of those women: “A friend of mine told me about Women of Hope, and it truly changed my life. At Women of Hope, they pro-vide for us—they give us everything we need and it is wonderful! I’ve never been in a safe haven before and it’s an amazing feeling to have a roof over my head and not worry about being on the streets. I receive three meals a day, clothing, job training, and so much more.”
