Concept Demonstrator

SWIM consists of standards, infrastructure, and governance that enable the management of Air Traffic Management related information and its exchange between qualified parties via

interoperable services

• Standards, infrastructure: – WFS, WMS, WS-N, WSDL, SOAP, HTTP, SSL/TLS, PKI

– XML Schema

– AIXM 5.1, IWXXM RC1

– FIXM

– WCM (coming soon)

Jumpstart Kit

• Air Traffic Management related information – Aeronautical Information

• Static – airports, runways, runwaydirections, taxiways, taxiwayelements, aprons, apronselements,

runwayCentrelinepoints, waypoints, navaids, navaidsequipment, routes, routesegments, airspaces, geoborders, organisationAuthorities, units, special dates and airTrafficManagementservices

• Dynamic – DNOTAM

– e-AMI (CDR)

– Aircraft

– Flight Plans/Flights : NOP (Network Operations Plan)

– Flow : ATFCM Notification Message

– Meteo : METAR / Charts (sigwx, satellite, wind)

Jumpstart Kit

• Standards based technology interoperability, syntactical interoperability and semantic interoperability

• Reuse

– Real AIXM 5.1 data : • NOP/ADRAIXM

• Istanbul/IFAIMA – Avitech (Donlon)

– EAD (worldwide)

– Frequentis (Belgium)

– Risk (Latvia)

– Thales (France)

– UAE, GCAA

– Real flight related services • NOP/Fight Preparation, Filing, Management

Jumpstart Kit

Discovery Tool

• Is SWIM hype or is it real and tangible? – With this tool you can do some sort of reality check on various aspects of SWIM.

• Are there domains of interest for you in SWIM as a consumer and/or provider? – This tool allows to have a closer look at various data sources, to give you a taste of the diversity of data and to

inspire you on the use of data in combination within your specific context

– For most data types, the tool provides an interface to quickly integrate and explore new and other data sources of the same type

• How easy/difficult would it be to get you up and running in SWIM in a consumer and/or provider role? – The source of the tool is provided, you can build it fully autonomously. Except for the hardware and OS on which

the tool has to be executed, all components can be obtained for free.

– If and where you want, you can go step by step through the source code during execution to see how exactly it is done. It can dramatically accelerate your understanding and equally dramatically shortcut your research investments/risks, it can inspire you, most probably to do it better.

• What if? – You can change the source as you want and quickly deepen your exploration by adding/changing functionality in

the areas you are interested in.

Jumpstart Kit

• Current Jumpstart

– Mostly a fat client – Empty, absent tabs => we intend to continue elaborating the Jumpstart to add

demonstrations of other data types and more protocols and to enlarge the discovery footprint

• Extension of the Jumpstart notion as concept demonstrator and discovery tool to other roles and platforms == Jumpstart kit.

– SWIM and SOA are about open standardized interfaces

• Consumer/provider are mutually platform agnostic

• Implementation of other roles using completely different and unrelated development frameworks and execution frameworks to demonstrate this agnosticity

– Service provision • Data transformation

• Data consumption and combination to re-expose as a new value-added service

– Cloud • Infrastructure as a service

• Platform as a service

• Software as a service

• Distinct elements of the Jumpstart kit will be assembled in distinct packages

Jumpstart Kit

Availability

• Jumpstart, current version (1.3.4), is freely (no cost)

available for the ATM Community from now on during the Master Class 2013 period

• Subject to signing a license agreement

• License agreement: available in the SWIM MC registry

• Documentation – Source code: yes

– Installation documentation: yes

– User guide: o…

DISCLAIMER:

– Intended for discovery and demonstration only, not for operational use

– Intentionally incomplete: Jumpstart is NOT a product

– Not optimized, not tested, not verified, not validated, not certified

– No support

– Minimal documentation, additional chunks may be provided on a Best Effort base

– The code contains algorithms that are not part of any standards or official business rules but meant for discovery and research only.

Findings • + initial discovery at the client/consumer side can readily be done through soapUI

• => use of technology that is mainstream, easily accessible and not linked to a

particular/proprietary platform

• + the payload of the returned data is AIXM 5.1

• => very high level of reuse of code that had already been written before for other discovery and

demonstration purposes

• + availability of live NOTAM data

• => this extends the breadth of the test coverage significantly and provides much more

confidence on the readiness for real operations compared to using only fixed set of data

• + inclusion of real data on features other than the event feature itself

• => not only a good preparation for an exhaustive implementation of the Digital Notam Event

specification but also allows to double-check the consistency of the data sent in a message

Findings

• + readiness to examine and take up issues

• => as a Beta user we invested resources in assessing the service, writing a client/consumer

application and in documenting the issues.

• => most of the issues are not reported under the "-" category as we consider it normal for a

Beta phase.

• + strong promotion for SWIM

• => service content with high potential and relevance

• => this service can play a considerable role in the acceleration of the update of SWIM

• - the missing link: both the scenario and the "theEvent" link are missing from the data

• => both are key to be able to interpret an Event and make an selection and presentation as

required within the context of the consumer of the service.

Further use of the Dig NOTAM data

• SESAR - Digitally enhanced Pre-flight Briefing (ePIB)

• EAD - Digital/Graphical SNOWTAM

ePIB

• Current PIB

– too long for the pilot to have time to read it and understand its content

– NOTAM data is not prioritized in terms of importance

– contains irrelevant NOTAM

– presented in a format difficult to read by the pilot (capital letters, abbreviations, poor

English, no titles, no grouping per feature, etc.)

– missing data in case of significant re-routing or due to inappropriate selection criteria

• Expectations

– graphical capabilities and better filtering based on digital data (instead of NOTAM

messages!) will address these shortcomings

– provide complete solutions integrating meteorological data with other data for planning

and maintaining an optimal flight trajectory

– up-load relevant aeronautical information before departure

– extend the content of the EFB to new types of data like airspace availability, route closures, weather, etc.
