Your itineraryDay 1: Fly to Hungary

Board your overnight flight to Budapest!

Day 2: Budapest

Arrive in BudapestIn 1873, a city was formed from the union of two towns on either sideof the Danube River. Traditionally, Buda has been the civic center ofthe city, with government buildings and palatial homes for the gentry.In Pest, one finds the city's industrial, business and commercialelement. Budapest has long been known for its musical, theatricaland literary character, and attracts many tourists to its mineral springsand parks.

Visit Memento ParkMemento Park is an open-air museum that celebrates the demise ofCommunism by displaying the large statues and monuments thatwere erected in Budapest during the communist regime between1947 and 1989.

Day 3: Budapest

Guided sightseeing of BudapestBegin your tour at Heroes' Square, where you will see the MillenaryMonument and statues of famous Hungarian personalities. Drivedown Andrassy Boulevard, past the State Opera House to theHungarian Parliament, modeled on London's Houses of Parliament.Journey up Castle Hill for a look at the Royal Palace, former home ofthe Hungarian monarchs. The castle has witnessed severalinvasions-the most recent occurred during WWII. Look for bullet holesin the outer walls, blasted by Russian tanks during the 1956 uprising.Visit the 13th-century Matthias Church, famous as the site of severalcoronations and for its colorful tiled roof. Your tour ends with a stopon Gellért Hill, from where you can take in some of the best views ofthe city. You will also visit the beautiful Budapest Basilica.

Explore Budapest on your ownThe rest of the afternoon is yours to explore Budapest on your own.You might choose to visit the famous Budapest baths or explorenearby Heroes' Square and City Park's Vajdahunyad Castle, whichfeatures replicas of famous Hungarian landmarks.

Day 4: Budapest

Explore Budapest on your ownEnjoy time in Budapest to explore the city at your leisure. Perhaps youwant to visit the controversial House of Terror Museum, set in anunassuming building on genteel Andrássy Avenue. The building wasacquired by the Nazi-aligned Arrow Cross party during World War II,and later became the headquarters for the political police following theCommunist `liberation' of Hungary. Learn how terror and suspicionwere used in Hungarian society as a means of political control. Or, optto visit the Hungarian National Museum. This museum is home to areplica of the crown of St. Stephen, and focuses on the history ofHungary.

Day 5: Budapest | Vienna

Travel via Bratislava to ViennaToday, your Tour Director will introduce you to Bratislava through awalking tour of Old Town.

Explore Bratislava on your ownTake some time to explore the largest city in Slovakia. You mightchoose to visit one of numerous museums in the old city (such as theMunicipal Museum which comes complete with torture chambers orthe Museum of Wine Production). Or visit the Primate's Palace, where

Napoleon and the Austrian Emperor Franz I signed a peace treaty in1805.

Arrive in ViennaVienna has long played a central role in the changing face of Europeand has adapted many times to war, revolution, siege and the riseand fall of empire. Filled with buildings of imposing elegance andbeauty, the capital of Austria also doubles as the capital of Classicalmusic. Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Strauss, Brahms, and Schubertare just some of the musical geniuses that resided, composed andperformed in Vienna

Day 6: Vienna

Guided sightseeing of ViennaThe residence of the imperial court for six centuries, Vienna is markedwith the seal of the Habsburgs, a family who once ruled over half ofEurope. In-depth sightseeing takes you down the Ringstrasse, aseries of wide boulevards commissioned by Emperor Franz Josef in1857. Ride past the Parliament, the flower-adorned Rathaus (TownHall), and the Hofburg, where the powerful Habsburg dynasty ruleduntil 1918.

Visit the Schönbrunn PalaceYou'll also visit the beautiful Schönbrunn Palace, where MarieAntoinette (the most famous of Empress Maria Theresa's 16 children)spent her childhood. When the six-year-old Mozart played for theempress inside the palace, he told Marie Antoinette, “I'll marry youwhen I'm grown up!” After viewing the elegant interior, stroll throughthe palace's beautifully landscaped gardens.

Explore Vienna on your ownEnjoy today to explore Vienna on your own. You might enjoy anexcursion to the Hofburg Palace to admire its stately courtyards andornate gardens, or visit the famous State Opera House. Otherwise,you might choose to visit the city's fine museums and churches, orspend your time in one of Vienna's many cafés sampling the localdelicacies.

Wiener schnitzel dinnerTonight, enjoy the authentic Austrian dish of wiener schnitzel, madewith boneless meat thinned with a mallet (escalope-style preparation),coated in bread crumbs and fried.

Danube River cruiseDiscover Vienna from the waves during your Danube River Cruise!Relax on board and view the landscapes, and the sights that make upVienna, including the Danube Tower, the Millennium Tower, the RingTower, the District Heating Plant Spittelau, the Urania Observatory,and many others. Experience navigating through one or two of thelocks as the boat is raised or lowered where the water levels of theDanube differ because of the dams.

Day 7: Vienna | Munich

Travel via a guided sightseeing of Salzburg to MunichBegin your tour near the ornate gardens of the Schloss Mirabellbefore crossing to the west bank of the city. Here you will visitMozart's birthplace, where he composed almost all of his earliestworks. Venture into the heart of the city, much of which was designedduring the 16th century by the Italian, Scamozzi. You will see theimposing and beautiful Domplatz as well as striking examples ofGothic churches, most notably the Franziskanerkirche.

Arrive in MunichWelcome to Munich! This center of culture boasts over 45 museums,10 university buildings and two opera houses. The city is also home tothe Olympic center with full facilities and more than the occasionalbeer-hall.

Day 8: Munich

Visit Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial SiteOnce merely another sleepy German village, Dachau has since 1933gained notoriety as Germany's first Nazi concentration camp. Today,the old administration building houses a museum documenting therise of Hitler and the horrors of camp life. Commemorative chapelsand memorials have also been built on the site, which stands as aneternal memorial to those who endured life here until liberation byAllied forces.

Guided sightseeing of MunichYour guided tour takes you past the Olympic Stadium, theheadquarters of BMW, and the fashionable Schwabing district. You'llalso pass the Residenz (once home to the Wittelsbach dukes ofBavaria), the Deutsches Museum, the university, and the AltePinakothek. Your tour concludes at Marienplatz, Munich's medievalheart, where you'll see the city's famed Glockenspiel. “Munich”derives from the city's German name, München (little monk), sonamed because the original settlement bordered a monastery.

Dinner with a local familyEnjoy a homemade dinner with a local German family. This is theperfect opportunity to get some rare insight into German people andtheir own distinct culture.

Day 9: Munich

Explore Munich on your ownWander through the Marktplatz, sampling the wares of local farmersand craftsmen-here you can also pick up a Weisswurst, the traditionalwhite sausage of the region. You might also choose to visit theSpielzuegmuseum (toy museum) just off Marienplatz. Stop by theFrauenkirche, where the devil stamped his foot in anger after losing abet with the church's architect. The devil's hoofed footprint remainsas evidence in the church entryway.

Day 10: Munich | Tyrol region

Travel via Neuschwanstein Castle to the Tyrol regionVisit “Mad” King Ludwig's fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein, thereal-life model for the Disney World castles. Ponder the young king'smysterious death as you learn the story of one of Europe's mosteccentric rulers. King Ludwig so preferred dreams over reality that hisservants could address him only from behind a screen. In fact, theoriginal plans for the castle were drawn up by a theater set designer,not an architect.

Arrive in the Tyrol regionYour motor coach winds its way below rugged, snow-cappedmountains as you arrive at your hotel in the spectacular Austrianprovince of Tyrol. This is the mecca of winter sports, where skiers,snowboarders and ice mountaineers come to test their nerve ontowering Alpine peaks.

Day 11: Tyrol region | Lucerne region

Travel via Liechtenstein to the Lucerne regionJourney to Liechtenstein, an alpine principality which dates back tothe Holy Roman Empire. Have a taste of the local flavor during your

midday stop here, with free time for lunch, before passing the royalfamily's hilltop castle as you continue through the mountains.

Arrive in the Lucerne RegionRecall the legends of folk hero William Tell (and his fortunate aim) asyou overnight in the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) region.

Day 12: Lucerne region

Walking tour of LucerneThe majestic Alps provide a stunning backdrop to your tour ofLucerne, where composer Richard Wagner wrote several of his majorworks. You'll view the Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument), a sandstonestatue commemorating the Swiss Guards slain in the 1792 Parisstorming of the Tuileries. According to Mark Twain, it is “the saddestand most compassionate piece of rock on earth.” Stroll down narrow,winding streets and across the Kapellbrücke, a covered bridge whosehistory dates back to medieval days-the murals lining its walls arenearly identical to those painted in the 14th century.

Explore Lucerne on your ownEnjoy free time to shop in the center of town. Famed for its Rolexesand Swiss army knives, which you can have engraved, Lucerne alsooffers some of the finest chocolate anywhere. Alternatively, climb tothe city limits and walk by part of the defensive fortification forspectacular views of the city and lake below.

Optional: Swiss Alps ExperienceThis exciting half-day optional adventure takes you to the top ofMount Pilatus, the majestic mountain backdrop of Lucerne. In thesummer season, travel to the foot of the mountain by boat acrossLake Lucerne then ride the famous Pilatus cog railway-the steepest inthe world-to the top. After 45 spectacular minutes and 6,387 feet,you'll reach the summit and be rewarded with a splendid panorama ofLucerne, its lake and the glorious snow-capped Alps. On a clear day,you can see for more than 200 miles! (Mount Pilatus can be cold,even in summer; warm clothes and appropriate shoes arerecommended. This optional is available May 16 through September30. Please note that the cost of this excursion is not included in yourprogram price.)

Fondue dinnerEnjoy a signature Swiss fondue dinner.

Day 13: Depart for home
