Minister Bussemaker:"What I also find a very interesting initiative are the Frisian libraries who (as the first in Europe!) make available a mobile FabLab. Young people can get started with open source design and 3D printing. This also ties in with the local problems in Friesland where young people often leave school without a diploma and companies are struggling to find suitable personnel."

FryskLab Linked Open Data Knowledge Base:

“FabLab and library are as much a maker space as an information space: a physical space where data is contextualized.”

FabML (Fab Metadata Language)

“As a remedy to the absence of a central repository, the FabML common description language was proposed in 2011. FabML is envisaged to be an set of metadata descriptors for shared Fab Lab projects or FabMoments. FabML is information about a FabMoment that is not part of the project itself. Examples could be the name of the creator of the FabMoment, machines, processes, settings and materials used in realizing the project, types of source files available, etc. “

Sherry Lassiter, Program Manager Center for Bits and Atoms MIT Media Lab/Fab Foundation:

FAB SHARE “The community is pulling together a Webspace to share projects, provide an archive for the network and collaborate. This is connected to a new grant award in The Netherlands to develop a system to interconnect the various catalogues of Fab

Lab projects. This system allows the catalogues of Fab Lab projects to speak to each other via meta-data — a similar approach to how library catalogues are linked up. Project parters are Bibliotheekservice Fryslân/FryskLab, Metamatter and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.”

“It’s enabling libraries to transform their relationship with communities and to empower community members of all ages to be creators of information, not just consumers.”
