ORGANIZATION OF THE GUIDE

The initial part presents general con-tents, such as tips for your bike trip, maps and brief information on the EuroVelo network, the EuroVelo 1 route and an explanation of the types of signs you will find along the route.

Below is a chapter dedicated to each of the five stages that divide the Ex-tremadura route. The stages, and the contents included in each of them, are ordered from north to south, which is the official direction in which the route is conceived.

Each stage offers you the following contents:

· A description of the development of the stage, with the main attrac-tions that you will find, possible incidents to take into account on the way, type of roads through which it passes, characteristics of the landscape ...

· A small map locating the stage within the complete route through Extremadura.

· List of places where the route passes by.

· You can’t miss... List of the main attractions of the route: monu-ments, natural spaces, festivals of tourist interest, other attractions...

· Services. List of establishments that you may need during the stage: tourist information offices, bicycle shops and workshops.

· Detailed sketch of the stage, on a double page, that includes the al-timetric profile of the route to be carried out. The available servic-es are indicated with a system of pictograms in each of the locations found along the way.

In the next part of the guide we in-clude a list of experiences, activities

and services that companies in Ex-tremadura offer you to make your trip more attractive, comfortable and safe. Here you will find all the necessary data for its hiring: name of the com-pany, contact details, description of the activity and/or service, which it includes, price and availability.

Finally, in the guide you will find Services information you may find useful, such as accommodation, res-taurants, spa and health resorts, ac-tivity companies or the main means of transport to get to Extremadura and to the start and end points of the dif-ferent stages.

CLIMATOLOGY

Autumn and spring are the best times to visit EuroVelo 1 in Extremadura. In summer you have to be especially careful because of the high tempera-tures in the central hours of the day. The first hours in the morning, at sunset and even at night, are the best times to pedal in summer.

PLANNING

· Plan your stages according to your physical condition and experience.

· Study in advance the route and the altimetry of the stage.

· Check the weather forecast. · Calculate the time you will

spend to avoid arriving to your destination at night.

CHOICE OF BICYCLE

Most of the EuroVelo 1 route in Ex-tremadura runs on asphalt or paved roads. Although it can be done with any type of bicycle, it is advisable to use a gravel or a hybrid one, which allows you to ride better, and at the same time to do well the more irregu-lar sections of track.

// Tools

// It is advisable to bring a route map

The use of electric bicycles is becom-ing more and more widespread. There are several specialized shops along the route that can help you choose a bike for your route or rent them.

LUGGAGE

If you travel with luggage, a good rec-ommendation is to bet on the classic cycling bags. Another option, offered by several companies in Extremadu-ra, is to move your luggage between the start and end points of the stage. In these cases, depending on the time of year, a small bag, or a carrier, will be enough to carry what you need for the day. If you are travelling in a group, distribute the luggage accord-ing to the experience and resistance that each one has.

APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT

Wear clothes that are appropriate for the time of year. Specific footwear and different accessories (gloves, socks, neckwear, raincoat, windcheater, sunglasses, sunscreen ...) will help us to have a satisfactory journey.

HELMET

In Spain, the use of helmets is com-pulsory for children under 16 and for all persons travelling on intercity roads.

ACCESSORIES AND TOOLS

Recommended:

· Liquid and something to eat (energy bars, gels, nuts, chocolate...)

· Basic first aid kit. Don’t forget if you take any specific medication.

· Documentation and some money. If you do the route alone, take a card (better if it is laminated) with your basic data and medical information (allergies and blood group).

· Telephone with a charged battery. · Portable battery for replacement. · Multi-tool. · Detachable. · Small inflation pump. · Puncture repair kit. · A couple of inner tubes. · Flanges and quick release link. · Lights.

MAP

Take a schematic map of the route (this same guide that you are reading is useful) that allows you to locate at a glance in the section in which you are.

TRACKS

You can find all the information about the different stages of EuroVelo 1 in Extremadura on eurovelo1spain.com. From there you can download the tracks to use them on your bike’s GPS or in various applications for your mo-bile phone: Wikiloc and Strava are two of the most popular.

EuroVelo 1 · EXTREMADURAETAPA 1 · Baños de Montemayor - Galisteo12

The first stage of the EuroVelo 1 Atlantic Coast Route in Extremadu-ra begins on the border between the provinces of Salamanca and Cáceres. We are on the old Roman road of La Plata (The Silver Way), which pre-serves its paving.

We start a descent that will continue almost throughout the entire stage. The route, of great scenic beauty, takes us immediately to Baños de Montemayor. This town offers us its thermal waters and a trip to the past with its Roman thermal baths.

From Baños we take a short stretch of La Garganta road (CC-T 16), to turn

right and continue along the green way of Vía de La Plata, whose route starts in Béjar. With optimal condi-tions for cycling, the valley opens up, going from the chestnut and oak forests to the cherry crops as we lose altitude. After crossing the iron bridge over the Ambroz River, we reached the town of Hervás, located at kilometer 10 of the stage. We enter through the old train station, today transformed into the Railway Inter-pretation Center and hostel. Hervás is a popular summer place and has one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters on the Peninsula, with a beautiful network of narrow streets and tradi-tional architecture.

EuroVelo 1 · PEDALING EXTREMADURA

STAGE·1Baños de Montemayor - Galisteo

A TOUR BETWEEN TWO VALLEYS: AMBROZ AND ALAGÓN

Simple stage, once saved the difficulties of the Sierra de Béjar. A continuous descent takes us from the southern slopes of the mountainous foothills, to the plains that emerge on the banks of the Alagón River.

Page 13: EuroVelo · 1 · 2021. 1. 26. · 6 EuroVelo 1 · EXTREMADURA ORGANIZATION OF THE GUIDE The initial part presents general con- tents, such as tips for your bike trip, maps and brief

ETAPA 1 · Baños de Montemayor - Galisteo 13EuroVelo 1 · EXTREMADURA

If you have the time, you can go up through a road of great scenic beauty, with exuberant chestnut forests, to the Port of Honduras (1,440 meters). Snow-covered in winter, it marks the boundary with the neighboring Jerte Valley, known worldwide for its cher-ry trees.

ROMAN RUINS OF CÁPARRA

We return to our route along the EX-205, largely along a cycle path, until we reach the crossroads with the N-630, where we must be careful. We take this road, in continuous descent, until we reach Aldeanueva del Cami-no. We are at kilometer 17 of the stage. The route crosses the village, which allows us to observe the typical archi-tecture of the area.

We now enter the region of Cáparra - Tierras de Granadilla, following the road parallel to the A-66 motorway, which we pass through an under-pass. We continue now on a paved track, with not much traffic, which runs through the irrigable area of the Ambroz River. In this way, we arrive at the ancient Roman city of Cáparra with its quadriphon arch, unique of these characteristics in Spain. Nowa-days, it is one of the main stages of the Classical Theatre Festival of Merida.

We continue, through the Mozara-bic route of the Vía de la Plata, along a path, which crosses large pastures

dedicated in good part to the exten-sive breeding of fighting cattle. We re-turn to a paved road (CC-12.2) to reach Oliva de Plasencia, kilometre 43.9.

PLASENCIA AND MONFRAGÜE

From here, 11,5 km from the EuroVelo 1 route, first on CC-12.1 and then on N-630, be very careful here because of the traffic, we arrive in Plasencia, a noble city, with an outstanding cathe-dral complex and relevant palaces. It has green and swimming areas on the Jerte River, and if we arrive on Tues-day we can shop at its famous market in the square.

Less than 21 kilometres from Plasen-cia is the Monfragüe National Park and Biosphere Reserve, a large area of Mediterranean forest and one of the most important places for bird watch-ing, especially birds of prey. At the end of February, the Extremadura Bird-watching Fiar (FIO) is celebrated here.

We return to our route and leaving Oliva de Plasencia we take a service road of the Tajo Hydrographic Con-federation, which along almost twen-ty kilometers runs parallel to an irri-gation canal. On this very beautiful route, with very little traffic, many curves and slight ascents, it takes us to Carcaboso.

From this town, the last section of the stage is on the CC-106 road. The land-

scape is dotted with riverside woods formed by alders and black poplars. After leaving behind Aldehuela del Jerte, already near our destination, we cross the regional highway EX-A1 through two roundabouts that re-quire caution. The access to Galisteo is through its medieval bridge, which is on the left in our direction.

MAIN MONUMENTS

Spa- Roman baths (Baños de Monte-mayor). One of the main thermal cen-tres in Extremadura and one of the most modern in Europe. Waters espe-cially recommended for rheumatism and respiratory problems. Under the current spa there are some perfectly preserved Roman baths (2nd century BC).

Jewish Quarter (Hervás). One of the best preserved in Spain. Wooden and adobe houses in a labyrinth of narrow streets and passages that still main-tain names like Rabilero, Sinagoga or Cofradía. Every year it recreates its past in the festival of Los Conversos.

Arch, bridge and Roman ruins of Cáparra (Oliva de Plasencia). Remains of what was the second most impor-

tant city in Roman Lusitania after Me-rida. Of Veton origin, it is crossed by the Vía de la Plata. It has a four-door arch unique in Spain.

Old-New Cathedral (Plasencia). The Old Cathedral, a building in transi-tion from Romanesque to Gothic, is currently the Cathedral Museum, de-clared a National Monument in 1931. The New Cathedral, of Gothic-Renais-sance style, stands out for the choir stalls of the Catholic Monarchs with carved scenes, not very orthodox, which criticized the vices of the eccle-siastical authorities of the time.

Historical site (Plasencia). Founded by Alfonso VIII (12th century), Plasencia has an impressive historical site, pro-tected by its powerful walls, where we can discover numerous religious buildings, stately palaces, the Jewish legacy...

Mirabel Palace (Plasencia). Built in the 15th century by the Dukes of Plasencia, Don Álvaro de Zúñiga and Doña Isabel Pimentel. The complex combines neoclassical elements and a plateresque balcony, unique in the city. It contains collections of hunting, tiles and Italian archaeological pieces.

Carvajal-Girón Palace (Plasencia). Currently converted into a hotel, it is an old Renaissance palace from the end of the 16th century, which is locat-ed in the heart of the Jewish quarter and very close to the cathedral.

Historical site - Almohad walls (Galis-teo). One of the most beautiful exam-ples of Almohad walls in the Penin-sula. Made of mortar and stones from the Jerte River, its perimeter, which is 3 metres thick and up to 11 metres high, surrounds the town.

NATURAL AREAS

La Fresneda cork oak (Aldeanueva del Camino). The largest cork oak tree in Extremadura. It is estimated to be 500 years old, with a trunk perimeter of 6.8 metres, a height of 20 metres and a crown diameter of 27.5 metres.

Monfragüe National Park and Bio-sphere Reserve. Just over thirty kilometres from the route, it is worth making a detour to see the most ex-tensive and best-preserved example of Mediterranean forest in the world. A paradise for bird lovers, our cycling will be accompanied by the flight of black storks, Egyptian vultures, and imperial eagles, among other species.

STAGE·2Galisteo - Cáceres

Except for the first few kilometres, almost the whole route is along the N-630 road, with little traffic after the opening of the A-66 motorway.

We leave Galisteo through an open landscape of pastures dedicated to ex-tensive cattle raising. We go through paths that, in some points, present an irregular firm. We also have to pass some gates that we will have to close after passing through.

Near the valley of the Boquerón stream, the route deviates to the east, taking a paved road (CC-29.3), towards the N-630. From here, we will not

leave the national road for almost the whole stage. Through a stretch of low traffic, on whose left we can see the foothills of Sierra de Zapate-ro, we leave behind the small town of Grimaldo and we gradually ascend towards Puerto de los Castaños (495 metres above sea level).

THE SMALLEST MONASTERY IN THE WORLD

At the top of the hill (Puerto de los Castaños) there is a wide roundabout that allows us, if we are interested, to deviate a little from the route, until Pedroso de Acim, over 6 kilometres

FROM RÍO TAJO TO THE FILM SETS

The Tagus River, río Tajo, is one of the great protagonists of the second stage, because we will do a big part of the route beside it or its tributaries and reservoirs. Today we will have to rise above Puerto de los Castaños and the gradual increase in height to reach the capital of Cáceres.

STAGE 2 · Galisteo - Cáceres 77kmby the EX-109. There, we can visit the monastery of Santa María del Palancar, founded by San Pedro de Alcántara, claims to be the smallest in the world and seems to divide the Cañaveral mountain range and the valley plain.

Back at the roundabout, we contin-ue pedaling down to the village of Cañaveral. A town with a cork tradi-tion, it was a resting place during the transhumance period. It is important that we take the opportunity to get supplies if needed, because we will not be able to do it again for more than 30 kilometres.

From this town, the route runs along the N-630, through the popularly called Tajo curves, which takes us to the banks of the Alcántara reservoir. In one of its tails we can see the ruins of the Alconétar Bridge (I-II CE) and, a little further on, the homage tower of the Castillo de Floripes, rising from the water. The route continues around the reservoir on its south-eastern bank and across the Tagus and Al-monte by both bridges. In this section the traffic intensifies and the road has a good hard shoulder.

From this area, as we leave the valley of Almonte, we begin to get into the typical landscape of Caceres pene-plain, with the granite batholite and a landscape characterized by large open spaces of cleared meadows or pastures with no trees.

TORTA DEL CASAR

We arrive at Casar de Cáceres, at km. 62.5. It is an obligatory stop to recov-er our strength. This town is famous for Torta del Casar, a delicious creamy cheese with an intense flavour, with Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.), which has an interesting museum. Don’t forget to visit its bus station, a building with a singular ar-chitecture that has become a symbol of this town.

About 10 kilometers separate us from our goal today. We cover them by a cattle path and a couple of kilome-ters by the CC-38. There, in the first of the roundabouts at the entrance of Cáceres, we take the right side of the bike path, with some strong slopes that at times become hard. This way we arrive at the end of the stage locat-ed in the train station.

Cáceres is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. A night walk will be an unforgettable experience through a medieval historical site full of buildings, squares and corners thatevoke stories and legends. The city has been used as a film set on numer-ous occasions. A city full of life and culture, which is also committed to modernity with the Helga de Alvear collection, one of the most important private collections in Europe.

If you want to extend your stay, just 14 km from the capital we discover the amazing Natural Monument of Los Barruecos, dominated by large gran-ite boulders, water rafts and storks. A landscape dotted with works by the artist Wolf Vostell, pioneer of the Fluxus art movement, whose Vostell Malpartida museum you can visit.

STAGE·3Cáceres - Mérida

We start the journey from the point where the previous day ended: the railway station of Cáceres. From the roundabout that gives access to it, we take the bicycle lane on the right that runs parallel to the urban section of the N-630.

It is important to not get confused in these first few kilometres around the area of the Cáceres fairground before reaching the military barracks. There is a stretch of road with restricted ac-cess and a sign that prohibits entry. At the roundabout at the entrance to the barracks, we take the N-630, with a good shoulder, which we will not leave until a few kilometres before reaching the end of the stage. There is

small traffic and little slope.

On this journey, the route of the Eu-roVelo 1 coincides to a large extent with the Vía de la Plata Route and, at times, with the Roman road and the royal glen of Cáceres. As we move away from the urban area, the dom-inant landscape is of very open holm oak groves and pastureland with scat-tered trees.

We have been cycling for about 11 km and we cross two roundabouts, which are not very well signposted, to cross the A-66 motorway and reach the small town of Valdesalor. Located next to a wetland of the same name, it is an area that has been declared

WATER AND PASTURES BETWEEN TWO WORLD HERITAGE CITIES

This stage joins two cities recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO: Cáceres and Mérida. About 70 kilometres with good roads and without great difficulties, except for small slopes.

a special protection area for birds (SPAB). On winter nights it is a great roost for cranes, an enjoyment for lov-ers of ornithology.

CÁCERES PLAINS SPAB

We continue through extensions of oak woods. Several constructions seem to watch over our path from their small hills, the Arguijuelas de Arriba, Abajo or Mayoralgo castles. A good area to watch birds of prey. We can see the remains of Roman villas, and even anthropomorphic tombs. This way, we arrive at Aldea del Cano with its stately houses with ennobled facades.

At midway, at kilometer 36, we find the Cruce de las Herrerías. Here we recommend that you turn off the road to Alcuéscar and continue to the Basilica of Santa Lucía del Trampal (about 7,7 km in total). One of the best examples of Spanish-Visigothic archi-tecture and the only one that remains standing in the south of the Iberian peninsula.

We return to the main route. We are losing altitude, going down to the Guadiana valley. The holm oak forest is partly replaced by olive groves. We pedal through the geographical centre of Extremadura and we find the small village of Aljucén, in the province of Badajoz. From this point the predom-inant landscape is the cereal steppe.

Passing km 612 of the N-630, the route takes a paved track to the west, on our right. Narrow, with no hard shoulder and little traffic, it runs through re-generated holm oak woods and areas with scattered trees. It leads us to the Roman dam of Proserpina. If it’s hot, this is a good place to cool off. From here we head to Mérida, which we reach first by following a bicycle lane and then by taking the streets of the Vía de la Plata Avenue, the bridge over the Albarregas River and finally Los Milagros Aqueduct.

The ancient Emerita Augusta surpris-es us with one of the most important Roman complexes in Europe, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. Its splendour at that time can be seen in magnificent buildings such as the amphitheatre, the circus, temples, houses, baths, bridges, aqueducts and its exceptional theatre. If we come in the summer, this is one of the great-est pleasures we can enjoy: sitting in its stands and watching a play from its International Classical Theatre Festival.

MAIN MONUMENTS

Arguijuelas Castles (Valdesalor). They are the two closest fortresses in all of Spain. The castle of Arguijuelas de Abajo was built in the 15th century by Francisco Ovando “El Viejo”, with a walled enclosure and protective towers and a beautiful garden. Later the castle of Arguijuelas de Arriba was built in the 16th century, also by the Ovando family. Both are very well preserved.

Santa Lucía del Trampal Basilica (Al-cuéscar). It is the only example of a Visigothic basilica in the south of the peninsula. It has an unusual architec-ture, with a singular head, with three independent and separate naves, to which a strange transept gives way. Probably built in the 7th century BC, it was part of a monastic complex.

Los Milagros Aqueduct (Mérida). Co-lossal Roman engineering work from the 1st century AD Built to supply water to the city from the Proserpi-na Reservoir. It keeps 73 pillars sup-porting three floors of arches, with a height of about 25 meters at the deep-est part of Albarregas river valley. It occupies the eighth position of the most beautiful aqueducts in the world, according to National Geographic.

Roman Theatre (Mérida). It is the most emblematic of the public buildings of Emérita Augusta. Commissioned by Marcus Agrippa in 18 BC, the scene underwent renovations at the time of Trajan and Hadrian. Built with padded granitic ashlars, it could hold 5.500 spectators. Today it is the venue for the International Classical Theatre Festival and the Stone & Music Festi-val.

Roman Amphitheatre (Mérida). Ruins of what was once the scene of battles between gladiators and wild animals. Next to the theatre, it was opened in 8 BC. With an elliptical arena and capacity for some 14,000 spectators, today it only conserves the cavea ima and parts of the middle cavea. It is the stage for performances and concerts by Emerita Lúdica.

Roman Art National Museum (Méri-da). A few metres from the Roman Theatre stands this exceptional work by Rafael Moneo. A museum of in-ternational reference that houses on

its three floors the most important archaeological collection of Roman civilization.

Temple of Diana (Mérida). Built in granite in the first century BC, it is the only religious Roman building that has been preserved from the ancient city. Dedicated to the Emperor Augus-tus, in the 16th century, it was reused to build the Palace of the Counts of Corbos, which helped it survive until today.

Roman bridge (Mérida). It dates back to the 1st century BC. Its origin is linked to the foundation of the city of Emerita Augusta. It was built on Guadiana River, made of concrete and granite ashlars. It is 792 metres. long, being one of the longest bridges in Roman world. It is composed by 60

semicircular archs. Since 1991, it is ex-clusively for pedestrian use.

Arab Alcazaba (Mérida). It is the old-est Muslim fortification in the Iberian Peninsula. Built in the ninth century by Abderraman II, next to the Roman Bridge. In its interior it conserves Roman, Visigoth and Arab vestiges, highlighting a cistern from the Anda-lusian period.

THE OENOLOGICAL MOSAIC OF THE TIERRA DE BARROS PLAINS

It is a stage without great difficulties, but in smooth and constant ascent along the whole route. We cross the Tierra de Barros Plains today, where vineyards, wine and cava are the protagonists.

We start the journey cycling along the banks of the Guadiana, enjoying an area declared as a special protection area for birds, where we can observe unique species such as moritos or cor-morants, among others. We crossed the river over the old Roman bridge. After crossing the Roman Bridge, we have almost 62 kilometres ahead of us, most of them on the N-630 towards Seville. We cross the region of Tier-ra de Barros, where the crops draw a mosaic of vegetation on the clay soils of this area, famous for its wines, with the designation of origin “Ribera del Guadiana”.

When we have barely completed 15

km, we can turn to our left and take the EX-105. After about 12 km we reach the town of Alange, with its renowned spa and Roman baths from the third century BC, which are part of the archaeological site of Merida, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. We also find the res-ervoir, where water activities can be carried out.

We take the EuroVelo 1 route at the point we left it and soon we cross the small town of Torremejía. Here we can stop to visit the Lastra Palace, a beautiful Renaissance building with Roman sculptural elements, nowa-days restored as a hostel.

CRADLE OF ROMANTISCISM

A little further on, surrounded by an immense landscape of vineyards and olive groves, we arrive at Al-mendralejo, cradle of the Romantic writers José de Espronceda and Caro- lina Coronado. Its streets are worth walking around, visiting its churches and palaces, but its real attraction lies in its wineries. We can visit the Wine Science Museum and taste some of its wines and even its cava, as it is one of the few places in Spain, outside Cat-alonia, that produces sparkling wine with the “Cava” designation of origin.

We continue our journey enjoying a peaceful walk through the plains

towards Villafranca de los Barros, known as “City of Music”, where we have the opportunity to visit the in-teresting historical-ethnographical collection of its museum (M U V I). A town dotted with religious and civil buildings of historical and artistic in-terest.

At kilometre 56.5, we leave the N-630 and turn right to reach Los Santos de Maimona. In this town you should not miss the parish church, with an im-pressive Plateresque façade, as well as the Manuel Santiago Morato Musuem of Art and the Encomienda Palace, the best-preserved example of Santiaguis-ta architecture in Spain.

Our last stretch today is a couple of kilometers of steep road to cross the San Cristobal mountain range. This is how we arrive at our destination, the cosy noble town of Zafra. Declared a Historic-Artistic Site, it is known for its International Cattle Fair (FIG), with almost 600 years of history. Zafra has a wide range of accommodation and restaurants, including the monumen-tal Palace of the Dukes of Feria, now a Parador Hotel. Some of the main attractions of this town are walking around its historic quarter, discover-ing the flight of the lesser kestrels in spring or visiting the Museum of San-ta Clara, dedicated to monastic life.

STAGE·5Zafra - Monesterio

THE LANDSCAPES OF ZURBARÁN AND IBERIAN HAM

Last Extremaduran section of EuroVelo 1 - Atlantic Coast Route. The second half of this stage is a little more difficult, with a continuous slope, using good pa-ved roads. Crossing wide pastures, we arrive today at one of the centres of Iberian ham: Monesterio.

We begin the journey by crossing Za-fra towards the south, in the direction of the railway station, on the BA-160 highway and we arrive at Puebla de Sancho Pérez. If we are interested, here we can visit what is said to be the oldest bullring in Spain, which is attached to the Ermita de Belén. We leave the town centre on the so-called Colada de Usagre road, heading for the N-630. At this point, if instead of turning right in the direction of Seville, we continue on for a couple of kilometres, we will arrive at the famous El Raposo Spa. We can enjoy its waters of curative properties, in a pleasant environment that is worth the trip.

Returning to the N-630, and for those who like archaeology, you have the option of turning off about 9 km to the right, on the BA-069, towards Medina de las Torres, to see what was once Contributa Iulia Ugultunia, the most important Roman city of the Beturia Celtica.

We return to our main route and con-tinue south towards Seville, on the N-630, until we reach Calzadilla de los Barros. We should not pass through this town without visiting its parish church of Divino Salvador, which has the best Gothic altarpiece, with Mude-jar elements, in Extremadura, and it is declared a national monument.

ETAPA 5 · Zafra - Monesterio 37EuroVelo 1 · EXTREMADURA

STAGE 5 · Zafra - Monesterio 65kmIn this area the landscape changes with vineyards becoming less fre-quent and pastures and cereal fields predominating.

LAND OF PAINTERS

We left the national road for a while and continued pedaling along a road that leads to kilometer 26 of today’s stage, in Fuente de Cantos. This is a singular town, birthplace of great painters such as Nicolás Megía and Francisco de Zurbarán. To understand the universe of this brilliant painter, a leading figure of the Baroque, we can visit his home museum. And if we take the EuroVelo 1 route at the end of April or the beginning of May -de-pending on the year- we can attend the gastronomic festival organised around the Chanfaina, a typical stew of the shepherds of Extremadura.

From Fuente de Cantos we can make another optional visit. This is the ar-chaeological site of Los Castillejos, a settlement with a long historical sequence that takes us back to the Neolithic period. It is located about 6 kilometres to the south.

We return to our itinerary, again on the N-630. We have twenty kilo-metres ahead, where the terrain be-comes more rugged, as we gradually gain altitude and the landscape be-gins to become more rugged. This is how we arrive at the municipality of Monesterio, where this stage and the

Eurovelo 1 route through Extremadu-ra ends.

In this town, a visit to the Ham Muse-um is a must, where we will discover the secrets of the breeding of Iberian pigs, their transformation and the production of one of the flagship prod-ucts of the world’s gastronomy: the acorn-fed Iberian ham with Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) “Dehesa de Extremadura”. In the city centre is the wathershed between the river ba-sins of the Guadiana, to the north, and the Guadalquivir, to the south.

Those who are fitter have the possibil-ity of ascending to the Monastery of Tentudía, 9.5 km away. With its 1,099 meters of altitude it offers a magnifi-

cent view over the south of Extrema-dura and the north of Andalusia.

We leave Monesterio to go across the last 20 kilometers that separate us from the town of Real de la Jara, the beginning of the Andalusian section of EuroVelo 1 - Atlantic Coast Route. We do it by the N-630, crossing mag-nificent pastures. We must be care-ful towards the 54th kilometre of the stage, to cross the A-66 through an underpass that leads to the rounda-bout at the entrance to the Complejo Leo (restaurants, hotel and gas sta-tions). We must go around it towards the south and after riding barely 400 metres along the EX-318, take the road that will take us to our destination, al-ready in the province of Seville.

Among them are parts of a wall, dated between the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC. Also vestiges of a settlement with a defensive wall, which had several periods of occupation from the 4th to the 2nd century BC.

BY CAR

If you travel in a private car, the A-66 motorway (Gijón-Sevilla) crosses the who-le region from north to south and runs largely parallel to the EuroVelo 1 route through Extremadura, passing through Baños de Montemayor, Plasencia, Cáce-res, Mérida, Almendralejo, Zafra and Monesterio.

For those travelling from Madrid, the main access is the A-5 motorway, which will take you to Merida. To go to Plasencia, at Navalmoral de la Mata, take the EX-A1 regional highway.
