NAME: Samuel Osagie COURSE: LONDON FICTION TUTOR: Daniel Vidal ASSIGNMENT: Evaluation of 106 Piccadilly Episode One EVALUATION FOR 106 PICCADILLY EPISODE ONE. The course that gave birth to the 106 Piccadilly project started as a very interest course with in-depth exposition and knowledge of the film industry but unfortunately it ended with so many aberrations and hitches which almost hampered the 106 Piccadilly project (the brain child of London Fiction course) and put it in abeyance. My nomination as the Director of 106 Piccadilly Episode One, started when we were asked to write a short story, after that we were later told to use the Five Steps of a Film- Exposition, Development, Climax, Complication, and Resolution- to break the story down, which I did, thereafter, we were asked to use the story to write a film script. I wrote my film script. Subsequently, the whole class read all the scripts that were submitted and we had a vote on each of the script, and my script was nominated as Episode one of 106 Piccadilly series. Then I was also nominated as the Director of production of my script together with three other production crew: Producer was Kon Chek Lim, Cameraman was Migi De Belen, and Sound person was Nadine Thomas. Shortly after the nomination, I sent a welcome message via e-mail to all my production crew, and also summon for our first meeting, which we held and discussed the modus operandi by which we will get the project done. We held another meeting a week later to discuss the production plan and came up with a schedule. As a Director of the film, in order to ensure I get the right cast for the project, I swung into action; I went out to look for people who are interested in the project and best suitable for the plots I the script. The producer was supposed to do this because this was part of his roles, but he is not the keen about the project maybe because he is studying Architecture (wondering what he is doing in media) and not filmmaking. I am a filmmaker, so, am very keen about the project, and I want to use it to carve a niche for myself. After doing the casting, I and the entire crew members went out to scout for the best location for the film, we took a risk assessment for the project at the location. We also design a animatic storyboard for the Episode using photos. I personally prepared all the pre-production materials and negotiated for the location release. A week before our shooting began; I and the producer did a pre-production presentation in the class, after which our team was issued a shooting certificate, authorizing us to commence the production of Episode One. I had another meeting with the production crew and we agreed in the meeting to start shooting on the 3 rd of November, 2008 through to 11 th of November, 2008. After the meeting I contacted the all the cast to inform them and get them prepared for Monday’s shooting.

EVALUATION FOR 106 PICCADILLY

EPISODE ONE.

The course that gave birth to the 106 Piccadilly project started as a very interest course with

in-depth exposition and knowledge of the film industry but unfortunately it ended with so manyaberrations and hitches which almost hampered the 106 Piccadilly project (the brain child of London Fiction course) and put it in abeyance.

My nomination as the Director of 106 Piccadilly Episode One, started when we were asked to

write a short story, after that we were later told to use the Five Steps of a Film- Exposition,Development, Climax, Complication, and Resolution- to break the story down, which I did, thereafter, we were asked to use the story to write a film script. Before that D-day, I contacted Daniel Vidal, who is the lecturer of this course, who had earlier

informed us that all the basic equipment needed for the shooting and production will be madeavailable by the University.

But to my dismay, that day came we had no Lighting kits, no Boom pipe, and other basic filmproduction equipment. Worst still, on the shooting we had all our cast and production crewpresent but there was no access to the video camera, as those in charge are not on hand torelease the camera. Could you believe that? It is absolutely unacceptable and demoralizing. We couldn’t start shooting until 11:45am, when we’ve planned to start shooting by 9:30am. As aresult of this disruption in shooting, we couldn’t achieve the target and plan for that day. And thiswas the beginning of the hitch saga that beclouded the Episode One Project.

We arranged for another day of shooting, but this time, we couldn’t do anything as the main

character of the film didn’t turn up. We started having series of disappointments from the castbecause of the wrong impression that was created the first day. Then my crew members started

showing lackadaisical attitude towards the project, and this almost makes me sick. I said, “oh myGod, why has Daniel given me this bunch of discouragement”. At this point in time I began soconfuse after made so many effort to get the support and assistance of my crew, they desertedme, saying the project is not theirs- “is my script and my film, so I can have it all to myself”.There was neither impulse nor any element of enthusiasm in them. Eventually, Daniel Vidalintervened and had a meeting with me and my production crew. The meeting helped to inspiredeveryone again. I mapped out another strategy, I spoke to all my cast to update them of thelatest development, and I had a short meeting with my production crew in which we agreed toshoot on Friday 14th of November. All production crew came in time on Friday waiting for the cast, then the cast came in exceptionof the main character. We all started waiting, then I opted for a replacement. I was rehearsing

with the guy I asked to replaced the main character, when the original actor popped inSo late, at 2:15pm, when we ought to have started at 10:00am. We eventually stared theshooting and we finished it at 6:20pm. We shoot all the sequences in the script in exception of one, due to the actors absent; the guy was actually with us but couldn’t stay late.We really encountered a lot of challenges and limitations. We were supposed to use two of theoffices in the University as location for some sequences, we couldn’t get them because theoffices were said to be very busy. I came up with the alternative of creating these locations for the film.

I am happy we were able to shoot this Episode but I didn’t fulfil my desire dream, as the quality

of the shoots were poor as a result of no lighting kits; microphone noise because we had noBoom pipe for Microphone. The cameraman had no camera experience as this was the first timehe is handling camera for shooting movie. There was no keen interest in the project was a monologue. I was the one calling them, and theyreally return calls. There wasn’t any team work apart from the last day we did all the shooting. Itwas the team work and determination in the crew that made that day successful and the wholesequences shot.

NAME: Samuel OsagieCOURSE: LONDON FICTIONTUTOR: Daniel VidalASSIGNMENT: Evaluation of 106 Piccadilly Episode OneI must also say here, I had the worst Producer anybody in filmmaking we want to work with. Thecast were good and co-operative; they were all students of LkW London. The cut short of this year’s semester has really dent the morale of many of us, as we could notedit and do the post-production of the movie. The school authority should look into this; we have

been robbed of our money and knowledge. This is not fare!

Kudos to Daniel! He is a genius. You are the best Lecturer I have met in filmmaking course, your teaching techniques and vast knowledge of the course is great. My encounter with him hasreally transform my filmmaking career.
