Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

By Ed Elliott

Page 2: Evaluation question 2

My front cover is a close up eye line shot. This created a direct mode of address tothe audience, this furthermore means the target audience of youths/teenagerscan relate and create a relationship (uses and grat) with the admirable artists.

Most of my shots were medium close ups, this enabled the reader to establishthe importance of the main feature artists involved. The only shots that took upthe whole page were the front cover and double page spread, this is because it’sthe feature and the main point of the article.

Stereotypically when doing my research, females were used on the front coverquite frequently, but this was challenged in as a countertype when I chose a maleinstead. The effect of this meant that it would stand out, and mean more interestfrom boys who relate and girls who admire, rather than the other way round.

The shot position on my double page spread is a typical convention of amusic magazine as it means the reader has to open the whole page tosee the article and image. This then will make the article appeal to theaudience and make them want to read it.

The male on the front cover of my magazine is wearing a formal shirt andtrousers – this carries on with all feature images of the main artist. Thisappeals to youths who want to grow up and be successful with a upperclass lifestyle. This is a countertype of many magazines who have morecasually dressed models but I wanted to make the audience have adifferent view and appeal to them from and alternate angle. The clothingisn’t related to to their age but is related to their future and make themwant to aspire to it.

The models used in my production are of the same age rangeas my audience. This means they can relate to them and feelmore obliged to form a relationship with the articles. So bydoing this, it creates a personal feel to the magazine andmakes them want to read it.

The double page spread model has a specific Miz En Scene with a smartlydressed style of shirt and trousers. It creates the sense of admiration, andexample. The shadows from the lighting create the chilled style with acalm surrounding. Furthermore, the stance shows that of reflection andconfidence, which is the message trying to be put across to the youthfulaudience that they need to be confident and have a positive reflection ontheir life.

As a final representation, my product did the following. The prioritizedreception theory was the ability to relate between the audience and theirage to the artist featured. This ability plus aspiration would create apersonal relationship that entices the reader and could make a loyal fanbase. The teenage artists are representing other youths, which makesthe audience want to reach their potential. This was done by the shotpositioning and miz en scene.
