Evaluation Question 2

HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT

PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

Page 2: Evaluation Question 2

The main character in the image on the left is very similar to the main character of ‘Carrie’; image on the right. Both characters are:• Female• Teenagers• Blond • Caucasian • Middle Class

Shannon, ‘The Missing’ 2015

Carrie, ‘Carrie’ 2013

In our thriller opening we chose to make our main character to be a teenaged girl, this is because in our pitch, it is someone getting kidnapped because we thought a girl getting kidnapped is more realistic, this is because young girls are seen as an easy target than a boy, this conforms to the stereotype as girls are seen to be more vulnerable. The social group presented in our opening is a female aged 17 years old. We chose this social group to attract our target audience which is 15 years and above. Throughout the opening we do not actually see who the stalker is. the fact that we did not take any shots of the stalker is because it creates a mysterious atmosphere, which links to the thriller genre.

The female character in our opening can be see as challenging the stereotype of a teenaged girl, this is because the girl is wearing casual jeans and a bands t-shirt, with scruffy old converse trainers, this challenges the stereotype of teenaged girls, as normally people would expect girls in dresses looking all fancy. An example of a thriller film that presents our main character to challenge the stereotype of a girl is ‘Bella’ from ‘Twilight’ 2008.

However the female character can be seen as conforming to the stereotype of a teenaged girl this is because, through the use of Mise-en-Scene we can see from the footage of the girl walking into the shop her make-up is all done up and her hair is neatly presented, this conforms to the stereotype, that girls want to always look their best when going out. An example of a thriller film that presents our main character to conform to the stereotype of a girl is ‘Teri’ from the ‘Equalizer’ 2014.

In the beginning of our opening we see the girl captured somewhere, in which she vlogs herself talking about what happened to her and where she is. The girl indicates that her kidnapper is a male as she uses the word 'he' a lot whilst talking. This conforms to the stereotype of villains being male. Men associates with masculinity, which portrays men as having the strength and power and also the dominance they have over women.

Overall, there are ways that our opening does and doesn't conform to the stereotype, however, it doesn't effect the audience because it makes the opening more realistic and believable for the audience
