magine owning a box that can give you endless amounts of money and

good fortune whenever you so please. Talisman looks at the consequences of getting everything you want in life; it simply is too good to be true. This short piece takes us into the life of two friends Georgia (Ellie Bootman) and Ella (Sophie Tarry) with contrasting personalities. Talisman gives us a glance into the world we live in; a world where we are in it for ourselves. After Ella gets hold of an old box, thanks to Georgia (reluctantly) handing it over, she discovers it’s powers to give her fortune whenever she uses it. We get to see the narrative unfold as Ella gains more and more, and Georgia seems to lose. There is a lot of potential in the story, and the viewer can easily relate to both the characters straight away in the first scene when

their differences are already highlighted. Throughout the short, we see plenty of each character as the story unfolds, and the audience are given time to sympathise for both characters. The full message of the story could not be fully delivered and that is down to it’s lack of emotional scenes where we get to see the characters fully involve themselves in the situation. It is unfortunate that we can’t see how badly it affected the characters, and if we were given a glimpse of that, the emotional message of the story could be more understood. Nevertheless, Talisman is certainly a visually pleasing film, and its production and attention to editing can be fully appreciated. Sear’s devotion to classic dramatic filmography can be seen in the sound, editing and

cinematography with extreme close ups and tracking shots. The material is all there, but what’s missing unfortunately is the depth in script. Director Sear has approached the film with a realistic and perhaps humble style of filmography.

It is a rather realistic setting, with realistic characters. The music, titles and editing help to remind us of the arty and unusual story that plays out. Overall, Talisman is a success of a short film; the effort can be understood. The audience will read from it the message that greed never pays off. The moral of the story is highly understandable, and we relate to both characters.
