How does your media product represent particular social

groups?

What we aimed to achieve

• In many ways, the different characters in this film conform to certain stereotypes in one way or another, however this is not always the case.

• The categories in which I will be explaining how we represent different certain groups are:

- Lighting - Camera Angles/Shots - Characters

Lighting

• For ‘The Suit’ in particular, his scenes are filmed in a low-key setting to show his sinister and dark presence amongst his team. The nature of this particular type of lighting adds to the drama and atmosphere of the situation by making the most of dark tones and shadows. This is good for The Suit as he is clearly the main villain in the film and this is personified by the lighting he receives.

Lighting

• In contrast, the other characters (Irish Tommy) have scenes set in daylight, so it is easy to see that they

are less intimidating and it shows that The Suit is clearly the one in command. Because these shots

are set in daylight, there is not much need for editing the brightness, the day was overcast as

well.

Camera Angles/Shots

• Low angle shots are used during the scenes with Irish Tommy, to show him as being intimidating and the left image shows a medium close-up of the suit.

To improve: We could have used a larger variety of shots to get the point across that we are trying to achieve, as we have not made full use of the technologies available to us.

Characters – ‘Irish’ Tommy

- Irish Tommy is not actually Irish: He gets his name due to his low intelligence (or so The Suit says).- This conforms to the common stereotype of people who are Irish in films being stupid- If they are stupid but not

actually Irish, they are called Irish jokingly

- Tommy indeed conforms to this as he is very well-known for his idle personality. However, as stated before, he isn’t Irish and his stupidity is completely

unrelated to this and so does not represent the Irish in any way whatsoever.
