It’s Never Too Late to go

High TechEngagement, interaction, recognition, positive feedback. The same elements that drive Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are ramping up the quality of life for many of today’s elders. Eventide introduces a new computer system designed specifically for seniors with the belief that it’s never too late to join the digital revolution.

The It’s Never 2 Late system is currently being used at Eventide Jamestown and additional systems have been purchased, thanks to donations received, for Eventide’s Fargo-Moorhead locations. A simple press of a button launches hundreds of applications – including music, games, travel, exercise and more. From using e-mail to connect with family and friends, to enjoying mind-stimulating activities and entertainment, to improving hand-eye coordination as part of a rehabilitation program, seniors with a wide range of physical and cognitive abilities, most of whom have never used a computer, are now enjoying technology using systems adapted especially for them.

“Many of our residents said, ‘I’m too old for a computer’,” says Nancy Steckler, Life Enrichment Manager at Eventide Jamestown. “I just tell them, ‘This is different.’ And they enjoy it…they really do. It has everything to make it easy for seniors to use.”

The technology was developed by Colorado-based It’s Never 2 Late (IN2L), a company founded in 1999 that specializes in connecting older adults and their caregivers to the benefits of computers and the internet. IN2L’s picture-based, touch screen platform enables almost anyone to use a personal computer, even those with dementia.

A profile for each resident saves the activities they enjoy most. As a result, no two residents will have the same “portfolio” of activities. The system is a huge asset to our Life Enrichment programming. The mobile unit offers endless possibilities for group and one on one activities, and provides a fun, easy way for residents to connect, engage and live life to the fullest.

Eventide is committed to ensuring the highest levels of resident care possible. Blending technology, therapy and activities together to holistically care for our residents fits perfectly with our mission- caring for the whole person and enhancing the lives of those we serve.

Leading theWayEventide Mission:To enhance the quality of life for those we serve reflecting our Christian values.

CORE VALUES

Integrity:Being trustworthy in the responsibilities we have undertaken on behalf of our residents and their families.

Compassion:Responding to every person with kindness, sensitivity and understanding.

Accountability:Committing all resources time, talent and financial, in responsibly fulfilling our ultimate mission.

Respect:Recognizing and honoring the dignity of each resident, family, and staff member.

Excellence:Striving to continually improve everything that we do, individually and collectively.

As we approach the close of another year, it gives me great insight to pause and reflect on the milestones and happenings of 2015. I hope you enjoy this newsletter, highlighting the many faces and places that shape our organization.

These are exciting times to be part of the Eventide family and we are blessed to manage the growth and change of our organization with the very best employees in the field of aging services. Nearly 1,100 outstanding individuals have chosen to make Eventide and our residents their career calling. It is the example of caring by individuals that inspires caring in the whole community, and reminds us of how firmly and fundamentally compassion is woven into the fabric of the Eventide culture.

We understand that in a rapidly changing world we must re-imagine how we operate if we want to continue delivering the kind of quality care our residents expect and deserve. Eventide is committed to investing in the tools, training and process development that allow our team to deliver on our promise of high quality services as we strategically plan for tomorrow.

Eventide continues to enjoy and appreciate the many levels of support by the communities we serve through dedicated volunteers, financial gifts, and spiritual support. In addition, we are blessed with the vision and commitment of our Board of Directors. Without this connectivity to our local communities Eventide would not be what it is today, a thriving, faith-based organization committed to “enhancing the quality of life for those we serve.”

Warm regards, Jon Riewer

SpotlightI began my certified nursing assistant career in Lisbon, ND in 1981, and have worked in this field ever since. I currently work in the Memory Care Unit at Sheyenne Crossings and love every moment of it; the joys & the challenges. I love my job because caring for others gives such a sense of giving back. It’s just an awesome feeling.

I also enjoy plunking on the piano a little, visiting with the elderly and singing with a worship band at my church. Spending time with my grandson Levi is the best; he keeps me going. I also like bonfires in the summer, camping and spending time at the lake.

My family includes my husband Dale, two daughters – Kelsey Fischer (a nurse at Sheyenne Crossings), and Taylor, who graduated from West Fargo High School last year, and my son Lance. My husband and I are now empty nesters; I am not sure if I like it yet. The house is way too quiet!

My Dad is 91 and lives in West Fargo. He donated the pool table at Sheyenne Crossings “so that the fellows would have something to do”. Dad comes over and plays with the guys too; it brings me tears of joy to see them having so much fun together!

Growing OurMission

Grants Awarded

The Eventide Foundation gathers, grows, and provides the channels through which gifts and grants flow to support and improve the quality of life for those in our care.

In my first year with Eventide, I have had the privilege of working with incredible donors and volunteers, who generously gave their time, talent, and financial contributions. Their efforts and gifts helped to create a full spectrum of programs and activities so that every resident we

care for can continue to live their lives to the fullest.

Thank you for your past donations to the Eventide Foundation. Every gift is greatly appreciated and allows us to Grow our Mission! You do make a difference in the lives of our residents!

Please contact me at 218-291-2287 or [email protected] if you have questions about the best ways to establish your donation or consult with your financial advisor for more information about how to best accomplish your charitable financial goals. Thank you for your consideration.

Eventide Jamestown was pleased to receive a $3,000 grant from the North Dakota Community Foundation. The funds will be directed toward the purchase of an additional It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) system to enhance the Life Enrichment programming at Eventide Jamestown.

The iN2L touch screen computer system has a variety of content that includes sensory, reminiscence, brain fitness, physical fitness and music specifically designed to engage seniors with very little prior experience with technology. The mobile unit is ideal for group and 1:1 activities.

Eventide Fairmont is grateful to be a recipient of an Otto Bremer Foundation grant. The awarded funds ($58,000) will be allocated toward a new emergency response system. The current system is dated and in need of replacement. The new wireless call/emergency system will provide modern technology which assures each resident prompt care and attention in the event of a fall or emergency. The new system includes 80 pendants, bath stations in the resident’s rooms, 10 pagers, and a master computer that gives the capability of running reports. The pendants are worn by each resident, creating easy access to call for immediate assistance.

Thanks to a generous donor, the club room at Sheyenne Crossings has a brand new pool table with all the accessories. The table makes a great addition, offering residents a fun, new activity to participate in. The residents couldn’t wait to “break it in” with a game, and it has seen daily action since.

Two new Nustep recumbent cross trainers for the Wellness Center at Eventide on Eighth were purchased due to a generous gift from a private donor. The timing was perfect as the previous Nustep equipment was in need of replacement. According to the Wellness Coordinator, the Nustep trainers are the most popular pieces of exercise equipment in the center.

Music touches everyone, and can turn the ordinary into something memorable. Eventide Fairmont has received a special gift, a Brambach 1929 Petite Grand Piano. The gift was donated by a local couple who sought a special home for their piano. It now graces the main dining room, where many special events are held. Residents will enjoy this gift of music for years to come.
