FUTURE PERFECT

An exhibition by ifa

The exhibition FUTURE PERFECT, Contemporary Art from Germany, includes films, photo-graphs, sculptures, objects, paint-ing, and collages by sixteen art-ists who look at visions of the future and speculations on the course of history. The title of the exhibition refers to the tense of the verb that expresses the com-pletion of an action in the future: something will have been. From this perspective, the exhibition asks: if the future can already be perceived as a finished past, how can we nonetheless develop visions, speculate, or move beyond tried-and-trusted ways of thinking? The ability to spec-ulate, to name intentions, expec-tations, and fears, and then to make these the basis for action is what holds societies together.

Today the future is increas-ingly seen as a critical concept. Even the very near future is so difficult to anticipate, with all our digital and mobile accelera-tion, and it seems impossible to come to a reliable understanding about the future. The fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany and the end of a world divided into two conceptual blocks has not only globalized our economies – it has also led to the demise of a good number of old European convictions and notions. But the future is also an emancipatory concept. In the southern Medi-terranean area in particular today civil societies are demand-ing a future, and facing massive resistance in the process.

This exhibition develops reflections on the promises the future brings. Can we come to an understanding concerning a future perfect? How do artists take up a position on the future,

using material, form, narrative, or imagination? How do they reflect the past anew? Where do they see options for action?

The exhibition has been curated by Angelika Stepken and Philipp Ziegler.

FUTURE PERFECT

Eine Ausstellung des ifa

Die Ausstellung FUTURE PERFECT versammelt Filme, Fotografien, Skulpturen, Objekte, Malerei und Collagen von sechzehn Kün-stlerinnen und Künstlern, die sich mit Zukunftsvorstellungen und Spekulationen über den Verlauf von Geschichte beschäftigen. Der Titel der Ausstellung bezieht sich dabei auf die Zeitform des Verbs, die die Vollendung einer Hand-lung in der Zukunft ausdrückt: Etwas wird gewesen sein. Die Ausstellung fragt von dieser Pers-pektive aus: Wenn Zukunft bere-its als abgeschlossene Vergan-genheit wahrgenommen werden kann, wie können wir dann über-haupt noch visionieren, spekuli-eren und gewohnte Denkmuster verlassen? Die Möglichkeit, zu spekuli-eren, Absichten, Erwartungen und Befürchtungen zu benennen und diese als Begründungen für Handlungen zu nutzen hält Gesellschaften zusammen. Heute erscheint Zukunft jedoch zune-hmend als ein kritisches Konzept. Selbst nahe Zukunft ist bei aller digitalen und mobilen Beschle-unigung kaum zu antizipieren und es erscheint unmöglich, sich in versicherten Aussagen über die Zukunft zu verständigen. So haben beispielsweise der Fall der Mauer in Deutschland und das Ende des Blockdenkens nicht nur die ökonomische Welt globalisi-ert, sie hatten auch das Ende vieler europäischer Einbildungen und Denkmuster zur Folge. Zuku-nft ist aber auch ein emanzipa-torisches Konzept. Besonders im südlichen Mittelmeerraum fordern derzeit Zivilgesellschaf-ten Zukunft gegen massive Wid-erstände. Die Ausstellung entfaltet ein Nachdenken über die Verspre-chen von Zukunft. Können wir

uns noch in der Annahme eines Futur II verständigen? Wie posi-tionieren sich Künstlerinnen und Künstler durch ihren Umgang mit Material, Form, Narration und Imagination dazu? Wie reflek-tieren sie Vergangenes neu? Wo sehen sie Handlungsmögli-chkeiten?Kuratoren: Angelika Stepken, Philipp Ziegler
