Industrial Revolution
• Industrial Revolution- was the transition to new manufacturing processes (increase in technology)
• Inventions like the textile machine, cotton gin, and the telegraph (morse code) are just a few
Industrial Revolution
• The Industrial Revolution also sparked urbanization, or the growth of cities due to movement of people from rural areas to cities.
• Northern cities near the east coast grew the most

Immigration
• Millions of German and Irish immigrants came to the US for the Industrial Revolution looking for work and a better life
• Immigrants came to the US from Ireland because a potato famine (massive starvation 1845-1852) had broke out.

• In 1840 Pittsburgh had a population of 23,000 people
• 10 years later the population had more than doubled
Trouble With Growing Cities• Overcrowding in cities caused many problems:• Dirty streets (people would literally throw trash in
the streets)• Spread of diseases• Cities lacked adequate sewage systems
