Last Tuesday the ‘Projects’ Tuesday Activity group enjoyed a fantastic day away from school to visit Dave’s Space Room in Te Awamutu. This visit piggy backed onto the work students’ covered last term when they spent a lot of time looking at, and learning about, the planets and workings of our Solar System, getting into and living in space, and exploring the unbelievably huge size of the known universe. An ex-television producer, Dave proved to have an amazing ability to interest, amaze and, at times, stun us with both his deep knowledge of many different aspects of Astronomy as well as how to combine many different video links, computer simulations and an incredible number of photographs in to one seamless pre-sentation that linked effortlessly with his relevant, and extremely interesting, talk to our students. It is difficult to do justice to how much we actually learnt and discovered in our 2 hour visit so instead I will let a few key photo’s and a few selected feedback comments written by students do the ‘talking’; “Dear Dave, I want to say thanks for talking to us about space and all or most of it’s wonders. The Super

Nova’s to the toilets (they now have on the Space Station) and showing us the basics of TV production as well. I especially liked looking at the sun with the solar lens you provided”

“Thanks for showing us your cool telescope and teaching us about space. It was amazing and fun and it was a real good time. Learnt heaps”.

“Thank you for letting us into your space room. I really enjoyed it. My favourite thing was playing around with the Space Simulator. I also enjoyed looking at the sun through the telescope”.

“Thank you for the amazing experience and for the interesting equipment which you allowed us to use. I really enjoyed the unique learning experience you provided for us. Your solar telescope and the solar filter that allowed us to view the sun differently and better were really amazing to use, thanks”.

A small part of Dave’s collection of item’s and memorabilia (he even had a Olivia working the mixing control cue card used by astronauts on the actual Apollo IX flight) desk on the near side; on the far side Reghan busy working the Space Simulator, looked on by Ryan and Joseph.

Looking directly at the sun through Dave helping Che look at the sun through special safety protective, hand a special telescope—it was amazing to held lenses. actually see 2-3 solar flares arching away Angus/Brendon/Ben/Jessica/Che/Ivyn from the suns’ surface.

Thank you everyone, I really enjoyed taking you away for the day.

PRINCIPAL’S PEN

Engā mātua, e ngā whanaunga me ngā hoa o te kura, tēnā koutou. Dear parents, caregivers and friends of

school.

There have been improvements with the uniform although it is not perfect. If you do not have copies of what is required you can go on our website, look at our prospectus or get a copy from Alida in the office. I am still waiting to see the parents of students whose attendance is poor, I will arrange times to come and visit you with our attendance officer. Next week we are welcoming a new teacher. We have been able to appoint the new teacher because our roll has increased. We have appointed Ben Draper who many of you will know and he will be teaching across subjects and across all year groups. We look forward to working with him. I am sure many of you will have met our new administrative officer Janine Stewart as she works in finance. Welcome to Janine and again we look forward to working with you. Following a Meet the Principal evening last term I would like to invite all parents/whānau to a meeting to discuss homework. I want to hear your views. It will be on Tuesday 24 June 7.00pm-9.00pm in the Library. Very often I hear concerns so this is your opportunity to voice them. We will start with a presentation followed by the discussion. Remember also subject parent/student interview is on Thursday 3 July. If you did not attend the goal setting evening you should have received a letter explaining the goals set so you can assist your child in achieving these goals. Julie Radice

Winners of a canteen voucher are Selina Noun and Lewis Taitoko. WAITOMO AWARD

We were disappointed to postpone this week ends trip to Tongariro, but a show of hands of those able to attend

was insufficient to warrant the cost to the programme. We will schedule another trip later in the term.

Hopefully, Tongariro 3 will still go ahead on 27/28 June.

The Hillview visits have been really successful and the students are building admirable and mature relationships

with residents and staff. Their own newsletter clearly shows this. We return there next Tuesday 10 June and

hope to get some stories from the past recorded.

Monday 16 June we go to Leitches Clearing. This will be a challenge with some night tramping and setting up

camp in the dark. Track discipline, hut etiquettes will need to be of the highest standard. Students are com-

pleting all organisation themselves. All parents/helpers welcome.

MINISTRY OF HEALTH MEASLES UPDATE Over the last two weeks, there have been at least five cases of measles notified in Hamilton in secondary school students. While those whose immunisation status has been verified, all were unimmunised. Measles is a serious and highly infectious viral disease that causes fever, cough, sore red eyes and a rash. The rash does not appear until the person has been sick for around 2-3 days. Measles can make children and adults very sick and complications will develop in many people. Some possible complications are severe and lifelong. Immunisation against measles is the best protection and is free for all children. Students with measles are infectious from five days before to five days after the onset of rash and must stay away from school the advice of the local medical office of health.

COLLEGE PTA URGENTLY NEEDING NEW MEMBERS This is a great way you can support your children and their school. The PTA has only 2 members left and unless we can get more parents on the committee we will have to put it into recess. The PTA in the past has funded mountain bikes, the covered area outside the gym, the citizen award annually donation to the ball committee and the glass house currently under construction. We raise money from a calf scheme and the annual mountain bike event “The King Country Challenge”, so if you think you would like to support us please phone Cheryl on 878 6640.
