PB4L is a school-wide decision making framework that schools can use to develop a social culture that supports learning and positive behaviour. The framework is intended to guide the decisions we make as a school on how best to achieve key social and learning outcomes for all students and prevent the development of problem behaviours. At Hillcrest High School we have been building on existing and proven practices to fit within the Hillcrest High School culture. PB4L school-wide takes between three and five year to put in place.

PB4L is based on a number of principles:

• Positive behaviour is a prerequisite to improving the engagement and achievement of our children and young people.• Positive behaviour can be learnt and difficult and disruptive behaviour can be unlearnt.• Individual children are not a ‘problem’ - we need to change the environment around them to support positive behaviour.• Punishing and isolating children doesn’t bring about long-term and sustainable changes in behaviour.• We need to concentrate on a small number of evidence-based programmes and frameworks that we know work.• There are no quick fixes. Behaviour change takes time.• Positive reinforcement is an important part of the PB4L programme, Hillcrest High School operates a Reinforcement

programme called “RAPID REINFORCEMENT”.

Welcome to Hillcrest High School

Hillcrest High School has served the Hillcrest and surrounding community for over 40 years. Over this time we have gained a reputation for delivering a quality educational experience. Students are given the opportunity to participate and excel not only in meaningful learning to achieve academic excellence, but also in Sports, Culture, and the Arts, and leadership opportunities. Our students leave Hillcrest as successful, well balanced young adults with the skills, abilities and attitude to enter the workforce or further study and make a positive contribution to society.

Hillcrest is a large school with over 1800 students. We have a diversity of cultures, languages and ethnic groups that adds to the richness and diversity of the school.

Currently we have over 50 International Students, including students from China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Chile, Columbia, India and Serbia.

Traditional values with innovative learning practices and special programmes of learning to cater for our diverse student population are a feature of the school.

My personal experience of Asia began in the 1980’s when I led a rugby tour to Hong Kong and Japan. Since then I have visited Thailand, Vietnam and China, with a current trip to South Korea and further trips to Shanghai and Tokyo.I enjoyed visiting these countries and learning about their cultures and traditions.

I was constantly amazed at the hospitality and goodwill shown by the people we met and encountered.

I look forward to strengthening our relationships and providing an educational experience that students can enjoy and cherish for the rest of their lives.

Our international student’s enjoy participating in the range of extra-curricular opportunities available and mix with other students enjoying learning “kiwi” culture, traditions and sports.

Teaching, learning and academic achievement is the cornerstone of our school. With some outstanding academic results in NCEA and Scholarship, we are nationally recognised for scholastic achievement. A significant number of our students leave school to further their studies at University or other tertiary providers.

Situated in the heart of the North Island, the diverse Hamilton and Waikato region is an extremely safe, family focused community that offers fabulous educational and sporting opportunities.

The Waikato region encompasses New Zealand’s fourth largest city, the country’s longest river, Hobbiton Movie Set, the stunning black sand beaches of Raglan and the world famous Waitomo Caves with its glowworms and adventure tourism activities.

The Waikato is also the heart of New Zealand’s dairy farming industry and the University of Waikato, a short walk from Hillcrest High School, is recognised as one of New Zealand’s finest tertiary institutions.

NCEA Results Hillcrest High School continues to achieve at the highest level in the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) and Scholarship.

We are particularly mindful of maintaining the academic rigour of NCEA while still creating a programme of learning that meets the needs of our diverse student population. We believe a quality NCEA programme needs to provide the necessary pre requisites to further our students NCEA course of study at school and also provide the necessary qualifications for furthertertiary study or work place employment.

Results for 2015 are very pleasing with Hillcrest students continuing to achieve at a high level in NCEA, with endorsement levels at an all-time high level.

To gain a merit endorsement students have to gain at least 50 credits at Merit/Excellence level and to gain an excellence endorsement students have to gain a minimum of 50 credits at Excellence level.

In 2015, Hillcrest students gained 40 Scholarships, including 1 Outstanding.

Since 2004 Hillcrest has averaged in excess of 40 Scholarships a year, which is an outstanding achievement.

• ELL (English Language Learning) classes are available at all levels and provide a strong focus on English language skills. Classes are available to improve language proficiency and fluency.

• A combined ELL/English curriculum is offered, providing a pathway in senior classes towards University Entrance Literacy.

• Trained ELL teacher assistance is available

• Foundation English classes are available

• Senior ELL classes require a high level of commitment to English Language Learning both in the classroom and outside school hours to ensure success

SPECIAL SUPPORT PROGRAMMES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL CENTREOur International Centre is a new, purpose built facility used as a teaching and Administration area and also for many social activities.

All levels of English Language Learning classes are held in the Centre plus small group tuition. The offices for the International Director, Homestay Manager and English Language Learning teachers and Assistants are also in the building.

The Centre has two large classrooms, opening the folding doors separating the classrooms gives space for cultural events, Orientation activities, shared Teacher/student lunches and meetings. There is a small kitchen which is used for social occasions and also as part of the teaching programme. The Centre is a popular meeting place for many students.

Hillcrest High School has a well-equipped health clinic, with two registered nurses who job share. A nurse is available to see students who become unwell or injured at school, offer advice and health information, and talk with students about adolescent health issues including mental and emotional health.

All International Students must have Travel and Medical Insurance while enrolled at Hillcrest High School.

The Library is colourful, energetic and a great educational resource for the school. It holds a vast range of books and publications, a computer area and is often used for musical performances.

Students are encouraged to apply to become student Librarians. This allows them to learn new skills and become part of the school community.

HEALTH CLINICLIBRARY

THE INTERNATIONAL CONCERTHillcrest High School is an exciting, multicultural environment and encourages performances from our many ethnic groups. The annual International Concert is a significant event, with performers delighting the sold out audience. Starting with Kapahaka, the mood then shifts to the Lion Dance team and then dashes around the world with items ranging from Korea, Ireland, Thailand, the Pacific and a range of countries in between. The items are a fantastic mix of the traditional and modern, across a wide range of creative talent.

Extra Curricular Activities

INTERNATIONAL CAMPOur International Student two day camp is held in Term One. It is a great opportunity for new students to make friends, gain confidence and to experience different areas of great beauty and interest. They are accompanied by International Staff and Hillcrest Teachers.

Students go to a new area each year and enjoy a programme mixing environmental education with New Zealand history and development.

They are encouraged to join in all aspects of camp and in some camps this will include helping with meal preparations, a very useful skill to learn.

We stay in camps located in a variety of places including rural Auckland, Rotorua, Tauranga and Taupo and offer a positive, rewarding experience to all.

Year 10 GREAT BARRIER EXPERIENCEFive weeks of adventure, team work, independent living and sustainability studies for a group of Year 10 students on Great Barrier Island to promote confidence and leadership in our students.

Each course can take a maximum of 30 students with suitable applicants balloted.

Please forward applications to Hillcrest High School as soon as possible as places are limited. Late application will be considered if there is a vacancy at an appropriate level.

WITH THE COMPLETED APPLICATION WE REQUIRE:

• A Reference letter from a teacher (translated into English is first language). If the student is already in New Zealand the letter should be from their International Dean.

• Examination results, school transcript or a copy of the last report (translated into English if the students first language). Evidence is required that he/she has studied the English language and has gained a satisfactory level of written and oral English understanding.

• A Letter (in English and in their own handwriting) from the student giving his/her reasons for wanting to attend Hillcrest High School and background information about the student.

This information will be used to recognise prior learning and the student’s level of ability in their present school. There are entry requirements or prerequisites for some Level 1,2 and 3 subjects. Entry to these subjects will be at the discretion of the Dean and Principal.

If the student is in Hamilton, an interview with the Director will be arranged. Where possible, students will be tested for their English language level.

IF ACCEPTED

A letter of conditional acceptance is sent with a tuition invoice and documentation that must be completed and signed by both the student and his/her parents. These documents relate to Tuition, Insurance, Accommodation and to the Terms and Conditions relating to enrolment.

Insurance is compulsory and must be paid along with the Tuition and other fees.

Once the signed and completed documents are returned and accepted and the fees paid, enrolment is confirmed.

COMPLETION OF ENROLMENT PROCEDURES

A letter is then sent back to the applicant with their receipt and a formal Offer of Place.

Conditions of Enrolment

STUDENT VISA

The applicant will then apply to New Zealand Immigration for a ‘Student Visa’ to study in New Zealand. A student cannot start school without a current Visa.

ACCOMMODATION

International Students may live with their parent/s, a Designated Caregiver/s, or a school arranged Homestay. They cannot live in a flatting situation.

STARTING DATE

The applicant will let Hillcrest High School know that their Visa has been approved and confirm when he/she will be arriving.

CODE OF PRACTICE

Hillcrest High School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Copies of the Code are available from their webside: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/

IMMIGRATION

Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service and can be viewed on their website: http://www.immigration.govt.nz

ELIGIBILITY FOR HEALTH SERVICES

Most International Students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlement to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health and can be viewed on their website: http://www.moh.govt.nz

ACCIDENT INSURANCE

The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website:http://www.acc.co.nz

MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE

International students must have appropriate and current health and travel insurance for the entire length of their study in New Zealand. An insurance premium for either Orbit Protect or Uni-care must be paid at enrolment or evidence of an acceptable, New Zealand based insurance provided to the school.

Refund Policy

Please refer to Terms and Conditions Agreement Clause 3.2 Summary below:

• If a student withdraws before the start of a course, fees will be refunded in full, less an administration charge of NZ$700.00 to cover costs incurred by the school.

• No refund will be given for departures after the commencement of studies unless there are special circumstances. No refund will be made to students who transfer to another school.

• No refund will be made to a student who is excluded or expelled from the school by the Board of Trustees. If a student’s position at school or in their homestay is withdrawn due to unacceptable behaviour and they leave Hillcrest High School, no refund will be made.

• One term’s notification must be given of any intention to apply to New Zealand Immigration for a change of immigration status. Any refund will apply from the start of the term following confirmation and the issue of the new visa conditions.

• If an application for a refund is made after studies have commenced and special circumstances accepted, any refund will be less the Administration fee, less any money owed to the school by the student, and less any costs incurred by the school relating to the student.

Any application for a refund of fees due to special circumstances must be made in writing by the parents, explaining the reasons for the change, to the International Director, Hillcrest High School.

Grievance Procedures:Any issues should be discussed with the International Director. If necessary it can then be taken to the Principal/Board of Trustees. If not resolved it can then be taken to the Dispute Resolution Scheme.

Student Homestay

Homestay families offer great opportunities to International Students. All families are carefully selected, undergo police checking and are regularly visited by our Homestay Manager. They are encouraged to take an interest in the educational and social life of their new family member.

Host families are from our local community and include a diverse range of family groups. A number of Homestay families have close connections with Hillcrest and some have family members attending Hillcrest High School. Some are single parent households and not all Homestays have children living at home.

Some of our most hospitable host families reflect the multicultural nature of our school and may not have been born in New Zealand.

Homestay fees are paid with the tuition fees to school and then paid one week in advance to the Homestay family.

Many families make long term connections and some students, at their own cost, have accompanied their host family on holidays.
