Thermal transfer printing is a digital printing method in which material is applied to paper (or other material) by melting a coating of ribbon which stays glued to the material on which the print is applied. It contrasts with direct thermal printing, where no ribbon is present in the process.

Thermal Transfer labels

Direct thermal printing uses chemically treated, heat-sensitive media that blackens when it passes under the thermal printhead. Direct thermal printers have no ink, toner, or ribbon which makes it a cost effective solution to set up for small to medium volume users.

We stock quality EyeD labels for high volume users, the global brand Zebra labels and our own range of Thermal Transfer labels.

Label SizeThe first dimension indicates the leading edge of the label as it comes off the roll.

Core sizeIndicates the inner dimension of the label roll core that fits your printer.

AdhesiveOptions include permanent, removable, freezer and water-soluble adhesive

MaterialThe most common, economical, material used for Thermal Transfer labels is Paper. Great for use in a wide range of applications including packaging, shipping and box labels.

For good all round performance, indoors and outdoors, Polypropylene offers resistance to water, scratching and smearing. For greater flexibility, Polyethylene is a superb option for labelling curved or rough surfaces whilst offering resistance to tearing, water, scratching and smearing. This label material can be used in a wide range of applications including packaging labels, pallet wrap labels, product and shelf edge labelling for indoor and outdoor use. Polyester is ideal for flat surfaces and provides unparalleled smear and scratch resistance. Also resistant to water and moderate chemicals and up to 3 years outdoors. Polyolefin provides resistance to scratching and smearing and is a flexible material for use on rough or curved surfaces. A synthetic material, Polyimide is designed to withstand temperatures of up to 500°C. Offers excellent chemical resistance and designed for high-temperature industrial applications such as printed circuit board labelling.

Labels per RollToo many and the roll won’t fit your printer. Too few and you’ll be having to put a new roll in more frequently.

How do I know if my printer uses Thermal Transfer

Thermal TransferAn easy check is to run your thumb nail sharply across the face of the label. If it activates the ink and leaves a

black mark it is Direct Thermal.

PermanentFor labels that are to remain permanently fixed

where they are applied.

We can produce any special size of label that will fit through your printer. Get in touch and we can confirm pricing.

There are hundreds of label materials. Generally, labels are made from paper, vinyl, polyester, and polypropylene.

A barcode is the small image of lines and spaces that is used to identify a particular product, person, or location.Get in touch and we can provide you with printed barcode labels.

Freezer A permanent adhesive most popularly used for

labels stuck to food or catering products which are likely to be frozen.

Direct Thermal If your printer has an ink ribbon it will be a Thermal

Transfer label. Please check carefully before ordering your label products.

leaving any residue.
