One of my favorite movies is the

Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful

Life.” Many individuals feel the same

way regarding this movie. Why is this movie

so popular after so many years? I believe it is

a story of encouragement that we “common

folk” do make a difference. We all have a thirst

for our lives to make a difference.

It seems that often times our true heroes

are overlooked. In a recent issue of the Manor’s

LampPost newsletter, I confessed to be being a

“reformed sports junkie.” I love the Olympics

and I also enjoy the NCAA basketball

tournament commonly known as March

madness. Often times “heroes” are made

during these events; endless media coverage

adds to the frenzy. Are these folks truly heroes?

Do their accomplishments make a difference

in the lives of others?

Two months ago, Moravian Manor

honored three individuals during the

Mildred Bender Awards luncheon. The three

individuals (a Manor employee, resident,

and volunteer) are chosen to be honored

based on the service they provide to others.

While you will see these individuals featured

in our community’s news, you will not see

them on prime time television. They include

the employee who has run our laundry

department for 35 years; the volunteer who

was a former board member and has filled

various roles within the Manor and the

community for many years; and a resident who

has served the Manor and always exemplifies

a spirit of humbleness and compassion. These

individuals make a significant difference in the

lives of others on a daily basis for years on end.

There is no fanfare for this extensive time of

service to others. In my mind, such individuals

are a representation of many who are truly

“Everyday Heroes.”

I hope you are able to join me in a spirit

of thankfulness as we reflect on 2009. The

addition and renovations to our Health Center,

Alzheimer’s Quilt Exhibit, and the success

of our Capital Campaign (and many other

accomplishments) would not have been possible

without Everyday Heroes. Some will receive

more recognition than others. However, without

the contributions of the “behind the scene

heroes,” none of the accomplishments would

have been possible.

One of my favorite quotes states, “Small

Deeds Done are Better than Big Deeds Planned.”

Everyday heroes accomplish the small deeds

done. The aggregate of the “small deeds done”

typically results in impressive accomplishments.

These deeds are the calling of our everyday

heroes. I thank you for being an “Everyday Hero”

for our residents at Moravian Manor.

There are Heroes…and then there are “Everyday Heroes.”

Everyday Heroes are not the one-incident, adrenaline-

pumping, life-saving heroes, but the selfless heroes who

know that helping others every day, day after day, is more

rewarding and fulfilling than publicity on the nightly news.

And Everyday Heroes do what they do without the expectation

of accolades or even a thank-you. At Moravian Manor, they are

the volunteers who faithfully show up to transport residents to

activities; the dietary services’ employee who braves a major

snowstorm to ensure that residents receive a hot, timely meal;

the auxiliary member who chairs an event to raise funds from

which the proceeds benefit residents; the CNA who goes out of

her way to purchase a gift on behalf of a Health Center resident

so he could surprise his wife on their anniversary; and the

donors who faithful support our ministry so that all residents

receive high-quality, person-centered care regardless of their

financial resources.

These are but a few examples

of our Everyday Heroes and I

could go on and on. No doubt,

these people don’t consider

themselves heroes, but they are

to those who benefit from their

extraordinary efforts. They are

Everyday Heroes. They are always

there, doing what they do not for glory, but for the joy of

helping another.

We are blessed by an abundance of Everyday Heroes here

at Moravian Manor, and we are grateful for their continued

support and compassion.

2009 Financial Summary

*A portion of the fund’s corpus was allocated to purchase a new piano in 2009. The fund balance had been designated for ongoing maintenance.

* These unrestricted funds were established by the Board of Trustees and funded

with operational funds for future development or operational needs.

The 2009 financial summary shows healthy revenue results from our operations as well as recovery

for our non-operating results from last year’s volatile market.

In 2008, Moravian Manor recognized a significant loss on our investments. However, 2009 proved to be a better year, and our investments rebounded with over one million dollars recognized in investment gains. Our endowment funds are invested with the objective to support the purposes for which the funds were established in order to meet our current and future operation obligations with a focus on long-term results.

Although investments and gifts help to generate our total surplus of over $1.8 million, it is important to focus on the results from our operations. It is the operations of the Manor that provided the true picture of the year’s revenues and expenses. In 2009, revenues—as well as expenses—increased by six percent. Overall census for the year was above budgeted levels, leading to higher staffing levels in order to meet expectations for the high level of care for which we are known. This level of commitment has a direct effect on the costs we incur related to staffing and benefits; however, we are dedicated in our endeavors to continually provide quality and compassionate care to all of our residents.

In June 2009, the addition to our Health Center, the South Wing, opened its doors to residents. With this addition, a “More Like Home” environment was created with more private rooms available to residents. Throughout the year, staff received training to educate them in their new responsibilities to create a home-like environment for the residents. As we completed the addition and renovations to our Health Center, our long-term debt increased in 2009 due to this project; but this was offset by our increase in assets for property, plant, and equipment.

In our venture to open the addition to the Health Center, a capital campaign was initiated to help with these costs. The Manor was blessed with an overwhelming and generous response to our fundraising efforts, and is happy to announce that our goal of raising $2.7 million dollars was realized in October 2009. The support and generosity of all our donors, whether towards the capital campaign or toward funds that help those who can no longer pay for their care, is humbling to see. This has enabled Moravian Manor to continue to fund programs and items that enhance the residents’ lives as well as provide benevolent care to our residents in need.
