Conveners’ invitationThe 70th ASOHNS Annual Scientific Meeting is being held in Sydney, March 2020, in the new Sydney International Convention Centre. As conveners, we are pleased to invite you to what promises to be an exciting meeting.

With the new decade looming, we have a program bringing together an update for otolaryngologists moving forward in the next 10 years of practice. We are being joined by five prominent overseas keynote speakers in the fields of Sleep, Rhinology, Pediatrics, Otology and Head & Neck Surgery.

Satellite workshops will offer hands on surgical skill training in otology, rhinology, sleep and head and neck surgery. the theme of our meeting is “Evolving Practice for the Next Decade”, reflecting the need to integrate the evolving knowledge of disease into our day to day practice.

We look forward to welcoming you to Sydney in 2020 for all that the meeting and city has to offer.

keYnote sPeakersassociate Professor nithin adappa Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Division of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA

Dr Nithin D. Adappa is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the university of Pennsylvania, uSA. He completed residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in otolaryngology followed by a fellowship in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery at the university of Pennsylvania. He is currently the fellowship director for the Division of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery as well as the surgical director for the AeRD Center at the university of Pennsylvania. He has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and recently was the editor for the second edition of the Atlas of endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery published in 2018.

Professor Catherine BirmanMedical Director of the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre, Sydney, Australia

Professor Catherine Birman is an eNt surgeon specialising in paediatric and

adult otology, cochlear implants and paediatric eNt. She is the Medical Director of the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre, the largest cochlear implant program in Australia and one of the largest programs in the world. She has extensive experience in paediatric and adult cochlear implants and has completed over 1500 cochlear implant procedures.

In 2017 Prof Birman was awarded the NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year Award for her work with cochlear implants. She received the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery medal for distinguished contribution to the art and science of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery in 2018.

Prof Birman has published and presented extensively on cochlear implant outcomes, including specific paediatric cohorts, complex cases, anatomical abnormalities, and in the elderly; innovative cochlear implant devices; and bone conduction implantable hearing devices. Prof Birman has participated in several grants and clinical trials.

Prof Birman has worked for over 20 years at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, a tertiary/ quaternary paediatric hospital in Sydney as an otologist and cochlear implant specialist, involved in a number of clinics including hearing loss, cochlear

implant and atresia clinics, and a multidisciplinary primary ciliary dyskinesia clinic. She also serves on the faculty as a VMO at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Macquarie university Hospital, Sydney Adventist Hospital and Hornsby Hospital.

Prof Birman is a Director of the Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children, a charity for those with hearing or vision impairment. She is a Clinical Professor at Sydney university, an Adjunct Professor at Macquarie university and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She has been a past NSW chair of ASOHNS and served on a number of hospital and NSW Health government committees.

Professor Howard FrancisProfessor and Chief, Division of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, USA

Howard W. francis, M.D., M.B.A., fACS is professor and chief of the division of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences in the department of Surgery at Duke university Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. As a neurotologist, Dr francis’ clinical interests span the full scope of this subspecialty including the management and conditions of the ear, skull base and associated nervous system. His research interests include the determination of best practices of acoustic neuroma treatment, the examination of functional outcomes of cochlear implantation in young children and older adults, and the study of best practices in surgical education. Recent publications include multifactor influences of shared decision-making in acoustic neuroma treatment, clinical and psychosocial risk factors of hearing outcome in older adults with cochlear implants, and personal characteristics of residents that may predict competency improvement. He serves on editorial boards of the Cummings Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery text, the Otology and Neurotology Journal and the World Journal of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is a member of the Otolaryngology Residency Review Committee of the ACGMe and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He was the 2018 president of the Society of university Otolaryngologists.

After completing his high-school education in Jamaica, and his bachelor’s degree at the university of Southern California in los Angeles, Dr francis earned his medical degree from the Harvard-MIt division of Health, Science and technology at Harvard Medical School, and then completed his internship, residency and fellowship training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He completed his Master’s in Business Administration with a focus in medical

services management at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. After 19 years on the faculty at Johns Hopkins during which he served as Residency Program Director, Director of the Johns Hopkins listening Center and Vice Director of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, he was appointed Chief of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences in the Department of Surgery at Duke in March 2017.

Professor natacha teissierGeneral Secretary YO-IFOS, Pediatric ENT Department, Robert Debré Hospital, Paris, France

Professor Natacha teissier has been practicing pediatric eNt in Robert

Debré Hospital in Paris since 2004. She is specially trained in all forms of paediatric otolaryngology and rhinology but is particularly interested in otological surgery and facial clefts. She is currently involved in coordinating the multi-specialty follow up of children with congenital CMV infection, especially the eNt aspects.

Since 2008, she has been doing research on the neurosensory sequelae in congenital CMV infection. Based on data acquired both on human specimens and on a murine model, she has contributed to understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of hearing loss and vestibular disorders due to this viral infection. She is also working on assessing olfactory deficits in congenitally infected children.

dr kathryn van abelAssistant Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA

Dr Van Abel earned her medical degree from thomas Jefferson

Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College) in Philadelphia, PA, after completing her undergraduate work at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH. She went on to complete both her residency and Advanced Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Reconstruction fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. After completing her training in 2016, she joined the Mayo Clinic faculty. Her practice involves the evaluation and management of a broad range of head and neck disease, focusing on surgical oncology and reconstruction. She

has a special clinical interest in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, skull base surgery, and salivary disease. Her research focuses primarily on HPV associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (tumor genetics, host immune response, surveillance biomarkers, management de-escalation, and outcomes) and skull base surgery. In addition, she is focused on resident education and has created a curriculum focused on simulation training for incoming residents. Outside of work she is an avid skier (prior competitive mogul skier), mountain biker, and fitness enthusiast who enjoys spending time traveling and playing outside with her family.

Professor tucker WoodsonDepartment of Otolaryngology, Sleep Medicine and Upper Airway Reconstructive Surgery, Medical College Wisconsin, Wisconsin, USA

Dr Woodson has dual board certification in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and Sleep Medicine. He is an internationally recognized expert in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome. He has lectured worldwide on issues related to surgery and sleep medicine. He has served on the Standards of Practice Committee, and Quality and Outcomes working groups for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine; the Program Advisory Committee and Sleep Disorders Committee for the American Academy of Otolaryngology, and the exam Committee of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. He is past president of the International Surgical Sleep Society and has served on many national and international leadership positions related to sleep and sleep surgery. His primary research interests are upper airway structure/phenotypes and ventilatory function and development of better and less invasive reconstructive airway surgeries including radiofrequency and plasma surgical techniques, transformative methods of palatopharyngoplasty, tongue and hyoid suspension, soft tissue tongue surgery, and cranial nerve upper airway stimulation for sleep apnea. He was the fIeRO honour award recipient in 2015 for innovation in education and research in Otolaryngology. He has co-edited books on sleep apnea “Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea 3rd ed” and “Advanced techniques in Surgery of Sleep Apnea”. He has published over 150 manuscripts, peer reviewed articles and book chapters.

Abstracts must be submitted via the meeting website: asm.asohns.org.au

suBmission guidelines1. Authors of research papers who wish to have their abstracts considered for inclusion must submit their

abstract electronically via the meeting website having regard to the published closing date. Abstracts submitted after the closing date will not be considered.

2. the title should be brief and explicit.

3. Research papers should follow the format – Aims, Methodology, Results, Conclusion.

4. Excluding title, authors (full given first name and family name) and institution, the abstract must not exceed 2,000 characters and spaces (approximately 300 words). In MS Word, this count can be determined from the ‘Review menu’. Any references must be included in this allowance. If you exceed this limit, the excess limit will NOt appear in the meeting publication.

5. Include details of main institution only.

6. Abbreviations should be used only in common terms. for uncommon terms, the abbreviation should be given in brackets after the first full use of the word.

7. Presentations (slide and video) will only have electronic PowerPoint support. Audio visual instructions will be provided to all successful authors.

8. A 50 word CV is required from each presenter to facilitate the Chair’s introduction. excess text will not be captured by the system.

9. the acceptance, timing, presentation and discussion of all papers and posters are at the discretion of the Organising Committee. Notification of the timing of presentations will appear in correspondence sent to all successful authors.

10. tables, diagrams, graphs etc. CANNOt be accepted in the abstract submission. this is due to the limitations of the computer software program.

11. Please do not type in your abstract onto the submission page. Being internet based, each page on the submission site can only be open for 15 minutes before closing. type your submission on a text document (eg. MS Word) and copy and paste it into the abstract text field.
