EVS AT SUPER BOWL 50111.9 MILLION VIEWERS AND ANOTHER EVS TOUCHDOWN!

The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched and most antic-ipated sporting events of the year. This year was no excep-tion as 111.9  million viewers watched Super Bowl 50 live as the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers to the title. As in years’ past, EVS was an important player to the game’s broadcast and integral to pro-viding the up-close action on the field.

Super Bowl 50  marked CBS’ 19th Super Bowl broadcast over-all, the most of any network, and CBS made every effort to make its broadcast unforgettable. 2“EVS XTRA” – NAB2016

The 2016  NAB Show proved extremely successful for EVS from a sales perspec-tive, where two major deals were signed to provide XT3  live production serv-ers in the new ChannelMAX configuration.

First up was Swedish broad-cast facilities company, HD Resources (HDR), which has invested in the servers as part of its preparation to de-liver multilateral production services for a major sporting event this summer. The new XT3s will be used for produc-tions across Sweden includ-ing football, horse racing and speedway, we well as enter-tainment and various studio productions.

The deal includes upgrades of HD Resources’ XT serv-ers to the new ChannelMAX configuration, which allows users to double the channel density of their live produc-tion servers. HD Resources will also upgrade its current XFile2  to the new XFile3  ar-

chive and transfer tool, de-signed to handle the IP file-based workflows of today’s live production requirements.

Commenting on the deal, HD Resources technical director Per de Navarro said, “With this investment we will be able to develop the produc-tions for our clients, so the upgrades announced at NAB will be invaluable for us and our customers.”

Marc Caeymaex, svp EMEA at EVS added, “EVS equipment travels around the globe and is used at the world’s biggest sporting events and this deal marks a continuation of that.

HD Resources spends a lot of time identifying the technol-ogy that will best service its clients and we’re delighted that EVS is part of such a sig-nificant upgrade.”

Shortly after this sale was announced at NAB, long-term customer Gravity Media Group (owner of Gearhouse Broadcast and Hyperactive Broadcast) agreed a similar multimillion pound deal to buy multiple EVS XT3 Chann-elMAX servers.

The majority of Gravity Me-dia Group’s new units will go to subsidiary Hyperactive, a leading provider of EVS-based integrated workflows for both live broadcast and feature film post production that was acquired by GMG in December 2015. The remain-der will go to sister compa-ny Gearhouse, a specialist broadcast services provider. Some of the new EVS servers will be sent straight to Rio de Janeiro for use this summer.

“Both Hyperactive and Gear-house are renowned for being early adopters of new tech-nologies and we view EVS as a leader for our industry whose innovations will help to enhance our customers’ live productions,” said Kevin Moorhouse, Gravity Media Group’s coo. “This investment has been made ahead of sev-eral upcoming high profile projects that we’ll be involved with.”

EVS’ VP Sales & Operations UK, Ireland & Israel, Brett Stoneham said “Gravity Me-dia is one of our biggest cus-tomers, and it’s testament to our innovation that they con-tinue to invest in our latest technology. The XT3  Chann-elMAX servers let our users utilise as many channels as they need and easily upgrade to more as functionality is extended. This will let both Hyperactive and Gearhouse benefit from the most flex-ible live production servers available.”

“WE VIEW EVS AS A LEADER FOR OUR IN-DUSTRY WHOSE INNO-VATIONS WILL HELP TO ENHANCE OUR CUS-TOMERS’ LIVE PRODUC-TIONS,”

TWO HUGE XT3 CHANNELMAX DEALS AGREED AT NAB

SOONERVISION EXPANDS PRODUCTION WORKFLOWS

College sports are big in the Midwest of the US, per-haps nowhere bigger than at the University of Okla-homa (OU), home to nearly 31,000 students.

SoonerVision produces all content for Sooner Sports TV, University of Oklahoma (OU)’s multiplatform media network, which provides programming for a range of FOX Sports and cable outlets, including orig-inal programming and stu-dio shows, live webcasts and on-demand video content such as highlights, features, inter-views, classic videos and more.

With EVS’ help, SoonerVision has expanded its studio work-flows with three new XT3 Chan-nelMAX live production servers, benefitting from the new op-tional ChannelMAX mode of the XT3, which doubles the channel density of their live production server and continue expanding as needed through Multicam engine software updates.

SoonerVision’s new system has a total of 36 channels with IP-Director content management and LSM Connect touchscreen for clips, playlist, searching and metadata management, mak-ing it one of the most advanced live production systems in col-lege sports today.

According to assistant A.D./broadcast operations Brandon Meier, the new system provides a more streamlined produc-tion workflow and dramatically improves SoonerVision’s pro-duction quality. “This system supports our new high frame rate SuperMotion cameras and makes the push/pull from our non-linear editing and archive system work much more ef-ficiently,” said Meier. “These critical new capabilities give us a whole new range of high-er quality, faster and more ef-ficient content production, and ultimately enables even better viewing experiences.”

In addition to serving fans in-side the OU’s stadium, Soon-erVision also produces and operates the video and score-board displays that appear across its sports venues.

The EVS Live on Tour mobile demonstration truck is trav-eling to North America’s big-gest sporting events.

Officially launched at NAB, the new EVS Live on Tour mobile demonstration truck has hit the road to bring together EVS users and partners across the country at some of the biggest sporting events.

Presented in partnership with Cisco, the truck gives

EVS customers and users across the US a chance to get their hands on the latest live solutions from EVS and discover new innovations for faster, better storytelling and future-proof infrastructures.

“The tour is the perfect chance for operators and customers to get training and learn about our newest technologies,” said Quentin Grutman, senior vice president at EVS. “As a bonus, we can entertain and network

with fellow EVS users in a fun environment. This is a big un-dertaking for our EVS Live on Tour team but we’re so excited to be on the road.”

For more details on the truck’s events, what solutions are demonstrated and to register for any of our stops, head to www.evs.com/LiveTour

EVS’ new multicamera live replay system for referees and officials was the talk of NAB following its launch. Presented at the show in partnership with FIBA (International Basketball Federation) and now the official referee system of the federation, Xeebra earned a Best of Show Award from NewBay Media’s Video Edge Magazine and a Game Changer Award from the IABM (International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers).

Designed for use by officials or experienced operators, Xeebra is fast, flexible and easy to use. An intuitive touchscreen enables multiple screen views of continually synchronized content from up to 16  HD cameras for instant action recalls. Users can

narrow views from all 16  to four, two or full-screen views through simple touches to make immediate decisions. A dedicated controller provides extended operations for direct access to actions, tactile jog dial, and the ability to manage marked reviews at any time.

Xeebra was also endorsed by officiating expert Mike Car-ey at NAB. Carey, NFL refer-ee-turned CBS rules analyst ,was present at the show to help demonstrate the tool after its first use at Super Bowl 50. He said Xeebra let him go from the “stone age to making deci-sions supersonic.” He added: “Xeebra’s functionality is su-perb. I can go frame-by-frame or slow motion, backward or forward. It has all the manipu-lations I could ever need.”

The IABM’s Game Changer awards are open to vendors who devote significant time and resources to bring their best new developments to the show floor. The awards honor this effort and the forward-looking solutions it yields. NewBay Media’s Best of Show Awards are intended to honor outstanding new products exhibited at the NAB Show.

“Our R&D teams spend a lot of time developing dedicated tools to meet the exact needs of teams and sporting organizations in environments where time is critical and making the right decisions are essential.” Laurent Petit, vp of product at EVS.

ON THE ROAD…

Earlier this year, Toronto-based Dome Productions brought live 4K sports to Canada for Rogers Sportsnet, expanding their live produ-ction workflow to deliver NBA and NHL games live in 4K-UHD.Rogers Sportsnet is also producing all 81  Toronto Blue Jays MLB home games in 2016  in 4K with HDR.

Ten Sony HDC-4300 cameras (fitted with Canon UHD lenses), which can output both HD and 4K concurrently, make this side-by-side workflow possible. In addition, HD robos, net cams, and overhead cameras will be upconverted to 4K.

To meet these lofty aspira-tions, Dome Productions out-fitted a side-by-side HD/4K mobile production unit to serve both companies’ im-mediate production needs and launched single-trailer HD/4K hybrid trucks.

EVS XT3  servers played a large role in the set up – more

units and more operators are required to accommo-date the greater number of replay channels required by 4K-UHD. In fact, 20  4K-ena-bled, 12-channel XT3  serv-ers as well as the XFile3  file transfer and archive tool, have been added to the workflow.

IN OTHER CANADIAN LIVE SPORTS NEWSRogers Centre, home to the Toronto Blue Jays, ordered a complete turnkey archive system to augment the existing IPDirector platform in place at the stadium. The system in-cludes several EVS systems, including a 6-channel 6U XS production server and an XStore shared storage solu-tion. The system is also inte-grated tightly with their NLE and they use IPD as their main asset management system for the control room. From the IPDirector interface, users can immediately back up and restore media in SGL’s deep archive platform.

FIRST 4K-UHD LIVE SPORTS PRODUCTION COMES TO CANADA

An EVS all-star packed his bags earlier this year. But only for a change of locale to sunny California. EVS vet-eran Stephane Jauroyou is now overseeing sales activity for the Americas out of EVS’ Burbank, California office.

Previously Stephane had been instrumental in guiding growth in Asia Pacific. Now his strong understanding of television operations and the sports and entertainment markets in particular is prov-ing valuable to our customer base in the Americas and for

growth in both the U.S. and Latin America.

In addition, Alfredo Cabrera joined EVS earlier this year, bringing a wealth of experi-ence in the broadcast indus-try. “Alfredo is a great addition to the team in Latin America,” commented Stephane. “We look forward to what his val-uable background can bring to the region and to what we offer the broadcast industry. His expertise will be critical in helping to guide our clients through the industry’s chang-ing landscape.”

NO GRAY DECISIONS

With Xeebra, referees can review plays with the utmost clarity and confidence. With its intuitive touchscreen, every angle can be viewed in detail on one or two screens in a fast, synchronized and efficient way from a variety of locations – giving everything referees need to make the call.

The first El Clasico of the 2015/2016  La Liga sea-son was played in Madrid in November. Leading provider of technical production and distribution services, the MEDIAPRO Group, was in charge of producing the host broadcast feed for the game between Spanish giants Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona that attracted over 400 million viewers.

To mark the importance of this clash, MEDIAPRO want-ed to undertake a UHD pro-duction of the match so it deployed two separate OB facilities – one for the 4K and one for the HD production.

The UHD signal was produced by MEDIAPRO’s OB39 outside broadcast vehicle, which was fitted with a technical infra-structure that would perform reliably at a higher resolu-tion while allowing the edi-torial team to remain as cre-ative as possible. It featured EVS’ XT3  live production servers in 4K mode which

together ingested ten UHD camera feeds and were con-nected to LSM remote con-trol panels. With this in place, MEDIAPRO’s operators were given the most reactive live editing solution to allow the production of UHD slow mo-tion replays.

To produce the HD signal, MEDIAPRO used its HD23 OB facility which utilized a number of live production tools from EVS that allowed users to create better storytelling at one of the most watched games of the year. 24  camera feeds were ingested by XT3  servers and operators used Epsio Live and Epsio Zoom to add enriched graphics and zoom into the replay at the highest quality. EVS’ MultiReview tool was also installed so directors could view up to 12  camera angles from a single display. Having this overview of content created a more efficient workflow and let directors make fast, on-the-fly editorial decisions.

“Using EVS’ XT3  servers lets us replay multiple UHD feeds just as we would in a HD production,” explained Daniel Lozano Rosales, director of MEDIAPRO’s 4K production. “We felt confident that we could successfully broadcast in UHD with these systems in place and without a doubt the technology came through for us.”

Oscar Lago Dominguez, director of MEDIAPRO’s HD production added, “using EVS’ live tools allows us to tell the story of the match differently. They let me make editorial decisions faster and with greater confidence. With these tools in place, I know I’ve chosen the right angle or clip that best reflects what’s happening on the pitch.”

IP MATURES IN THE LIVE ENVIRONMENT

Anyone who knows EVS knows that IP has been part of our workflows for many years. The fundamental shift we’re see-ing now is to IP infrastructure for the heart of live production. We’re expanding from systems that use IP – like the C-Cast connected content platform and MultiReview live content tool – to the live production core itself, including content acquisition, recording and servers in the live environment is making quick inroads.

MAKING A SMART TRANSITION

As we make this shift along-side partners like Cisco, we need to intelligently manage hybrid SDI/IP workflows, in-tegrate with off-the-shelf networking equipment, and develop solutions that bring IP’s inherent benefits to live production. Most importantly, IP4Live, our strategic ap-proach to the IP transition, brings the benefits of IP-based workflows to live production

while preserving customers investments.

IP-BASED PRODUCT INNOVATIONS

EVS’ product portfolio reflects this commitment, and includes interoperable, IP-based solu-tions such as the XiP media gateway, which expands the IP capabilities of the XT3  and XS3 media production servers.

On March 1st 2016, VRT demon-strated a second live mul-ti-camera IP production. This time, a 60-minute multi-cam-era debate was produced en-tirely using IP technology and livecast over Internet. It fea-tured Mrs. Brigitta Nickelsen, Director of Business Devel-opment at Radio Bremen, Mr. Mick De Valck, Director of Technology and Operations of VRT, Mr. Charlie Cope, Techni-cal Executive at BBC Sport, and Dr. Hans Hoffmann, Senior Manager at EBU Technology and Innovation. At the event

hosted by Mr. Ben Roelants, the group shared their per-spectives on the transition to live IP production in front of a live audience of event participants.

These are the kind of innova-tions that define new workflow operations like remote and emerging production designs and will yield tremendous ben-efits for customers and provid-ers alike.

Open, standards-based solu-tions for interoperability are critical to any IP systems or solutions. That’s why EVS, alongside other industry lead-ers, is part of the AIMS Al-liance, which is working to develop and promote indus-try-wide IP standards.

CONTENT IN CONCERTThe C-Next contribution platform gives your teams in the trucks and at the broadcast center everything they need to access, create, manage and exchange content – in seamless unison.

As part of an upgrade to HD, the Dutch broadcaster Evangelische Omroep was looking for a new switcher which was flexible and could easily evolve with ever-chang-ing production requirements. After careful consideration, it opted for DYVI, EVS’ IT-based switcher that would fit per-fectly in its new HD production infrastructure.

With a powerful combination of enterprise-level IT hardware, creative software and a high-ly intuitive user interface, DYVI has the ability to quickly trans-form the way EO produces vid-eo. It offers this functionality, all in a cost effective, tailored and highly reliable package.

Installed at the end of 2015, DYVI was used by EO for the first time on the Blauw Bloed program which features con-tent about the Dutch royal fam-ily and more recently on a live show, De Tafel van Thijs.

Evangelische Omroep’s head of production, Gerard den Hertog

said “DYVI is just what we were looking for in a new switcher - we needed something that would suit the flexible nature of what we do as a content pro-ducer. In the world of produc-tion switchers, DYVI is the next step. It’s the way everyone will go and we’re very excited that we’re one of the first to have it here at EO.”

EO has a long relationship with EVS having installed an XS media server in 2011. At the same time it implemented an IPDirector content manage-ment system – both of which were also upgraded to HD and remain as key parts of the pro-duction workflow.

One of nine member-based broadcasting associations con-tributing to the Netherlands’ Public Broadcasting system, Evangelische Omroep (EO) provides broadcast, radio and online content to audiences throughout the country.

8“EVS XTRA” – NAB2016

To celebrate the partner-ship between EVS and FIBA, the International Basket-ball Federation, EVS’ NAB booth was transformed into the #EVSlamDunk Experience. The live immersive basket-ball challenge highlighted the latest EVS control room solu-tions, and featured EVS’ new officiating tool, Xeebra, which made its first public appear-ance at NAB.

On a purpose-built bas-ketball court featuring a Daktronics scoreboard and referee’s table, visitors to the EVS booth could either shoot a free throw or try for a slam dunk in front of eight camer-as. Feeds from the cameras were sent to EVS servers at the courtside control room, where an LSM operator cre-ated instant replay clips with integrated data, such as shot

clock information. Once the replay was created and en-riched with data, a FIBA guest referee was on hand to review the multi-camera clips using Xeebra.

Other EVS solutions demon-strated in this live experi-ence included the latest Live Slow Motion (LSM) tools for adding more efficiency to the on-air presentation. EPSIO FX enabled high im-pact graphics while its Reveal Mode inserted data from scoreboard and shot clock details to the live and slow motion replays.

FanCast, the all-in-one re-cording, production and mul-ti-screen distribution solution for enhanced fan engagement and EVS’ IT-based production switcher, DYVI, were also part of the demonstration.

The age of sports live in 4K in the U.S. scored an ace in April when CBS and DirecTV com-bined to produce and deliver live 4K coverage of The Mas-ters tournament at Augus-ta National Golf Club. CBS Sports produced the 4K cover-age for the event, one of golf’s most prestigious, downcon-verted for the HD “Amen Cor-ner” (nicknamed for the 11th, 12th and 13th holes at Augus-ta National) feed available on Masters.com and DirecTV Masters Mix.

Teeing off with XT3  Chann-elMax CBS used  the 39  Flex double-expando 4K mobile truck from Mobile TV Group

(MTVG), operators of one of the country’s largest fleets of mobile production trucks. Designed specifically for 4K (and 4K HDR) production, 39  Flex features the neces-sary infrastructure to support more than a dozen 4K cam-eras and  replay devices. The latest XT3  ChannelMAX serv-er system provides the unique ability to support produc-tion of UHD-4K for 2X Super Motion.

According to MTVG co-owner and GM Philip Garvin, “As we expand our fleet of Flex 4K mobile units, we’re focusing on delivering the very highest quality, since that’s the add-

ed value for the fan watching at home. Ultra-high defini-tion and high dynamic range are re-writing the rulebook for pro sports events. At the same time, we recognize that 4K is an emerging standard for broadcasters, so we’re de-signing our units with compo-nents and workflows that also work economically for HD and Super Slowmo production.”

The live 4K/UHD coverage of all four rounds from Amen Corner served as the inaugu-ral live event of CBS Sports’ new DirecTV 4K Channel, which launched in April.
