How Should I Prepare?If this is your � rst time picking out

a new countertop, come equipped.

and think about how much use it will get. Bring

measurements and samples of coordinating

materials—such as paint chips or a cabinet

door sample—in order to match colors. Also,

remember that the bright lighting in a showroom

Choose the Perfect Carpet for Your Lifestyle

What is the difference between nylon, polyester and olefi n carpeting? And what is Triexta? Nylon is the most commonly used � ber for carpet, historically regarded as the most durable. Polyester offers exceptional softness and is naturally stain and fade resistant. Polyester is considered the value � ber, and is a good choice for low-to-medium traf� c settings, such as bedrooms. Ole� n is the most stain-resistant � ber and is primarily available in Berber and commercial carpets. Triexta, made by DuPont, offers the wear advantages of nylon and has built-in, lifetime stain and soil resistance that does not wash or wear off and is very easy to clean with just water.

Which carpet wears the best— especially with children and pets?Nylon is traditionally cited as the most durable � ber, but new technology � bers have been found to perform just as well as nylon. But more important than the speci� c � ber is the construction of the carpet. Look for cut pile carpets that are tightly twisted and dense (� bers very close together.) Solution-dyed nylon, Triexta and solution-dyed polyester can be cleaned very aggressively without damage to the carpet.

What is the difference between saxony, textured, frieze and Berber carpet? Saxony, textured and frieze are categorized as cut pile carpets. Saxony is a formal carpet that shows footprints easily, while textured carpets are tightly twisted to minimize footprints. Friezes are even more tightly twisted. Berber is looped.

What is a “cut and loop” carpet?A “cut and loop” is a carpet with both looped and cut � bers, in a pattern or design.

What is ounce weight? Ounce weight (also called face weight) is a measure of the amount of � ber in a square yard of carpet. The higher the number, the more � ber is used in the construction of the carpet. For example, an entry-level carpet is usually 18 to 30 ounces. A mid-grade carpet ranges from 30 to 50 ounces, and higher-end carpets are 60 ounces and up.

Elements of the design included the pool deck, an outdoor kitchen, stone � repit, stone wall and steps and lush, colorful garden plantings.

The biggest hurdle with this project was the scale of the site. The rear of the property was small and surrounded by very tall granite walls. The designer developed a plan that encouraged a functional and engaging pool and gathering space that also created a visually pleasing

outdoor garden environment.

Sharon and Ken Fraser, both originally from the

United Kingdom, have enjoyed raising their

four children in the North Atlanta suburbs. As

a large family of six, the Frasers relish time spent

with everyone together. With their oldest children

now away from home and the youngest—twin

girls—busy teenagers, their combined schedules

can make finding focused family time more difficult

to pencil in on the calendar, yet more important

than ever to prioritize.

While cooking and entertaining have always been

favored hobbies for the Frasers, they were less

than enthusiastic about using their dark, outdated

kitchen. Once they decided to remodel, they turned

to friend and designer Steve McKenzie, who had

lived nearby for years. “We met 15 years ago at the

bus stop,” McKenzie says. “Their oldest daughter and

our son are the same age.” That family connection

proved to be a source of valuable insight. McKenzie

understood the atmosphere the Frasers wanted

to create and also recognized the type of project

they needed. McKenzie explains, “There is a lot of

‘sameness’ in the neighborhood and the kitchen

is a big investment. They wanted to make sure it

reflected them, but did not look like everyone’s

kitchen. They felt the old kitchen just didn’t fit their

lifestyle and expression … it had no soul.”

This bonnie clan certainly shines with an

enthusiastic spirit—they deserved a kitchen that

captures their vitality and serves as a welcoming

place for all invited into their home.

opened up the

room with a

tranquil, yet

bright, palette

and signature

lighting to

illuminate

the previously

shadowed room.

The Frasers

were eager to

collaborate,

joining the

McKenzie

design team on

appointments

to select the

specific slabs of marble and granite they wanted for the

countertops, examining tile options for their glass mosaic

backsplash and choosing hardware that not only worked

in the design, but also felt sturdy to the hand. They elected

to keep their existing kitchen table and the McKenzie team

gave it a beautiful paint treatment that seamlessly blends in

with the custom cabinetry built by Henri Menendez of Bella

Vista Construction, who also performed all construction for

the job. The expansive center island has become a central

gathering spot and seats all six family members, in addition to

accommodating the cooktop, microwave and heating drawers.

Every inch of the layout has been considered and

personalized for the Frasers’ needs. The family now

embraces any opportunity to settle into their kitchen. They

told McKenzie some of their favorite elements are “eye-

catching pieces like the bowl chandelier that illuminates

the beautifully hand-painted table where our family shares

stories from the day, and [we love] the island—perfect for

entertaining friends over a bottle of cabernet.”

The refrigerator—probably the biggest and

most expensive appliance in your kitchen—

is also the hardest working. It’s plugged

in and chilling all day, everyday. If you’re

in the market for a new one, there’s a lot

to consider. Cost, of course, is a big factor:

it doesn’t just take money to buy a fridge,

but to operate it too. The good news is that

innovative advancements in refrigerator

design have made a big impact on energy

use and can directly lower your electric

bill and costly food spoilage too. And

manufacturers aren’t stopping there—they’re

literally thinking outside the [ice]box to

enhance how a fridge functions for you.

Start With the Finish

A stainless steel fridge isn’t going to set

your kitchen apart from all the others, but

there’s a good reason why this finish is

so popular: it looks good with almost every imaginable cabinet surface. And it’s economical—if you opt for

a specialty finish, the cost of the fridge can increase and, over time, availability of that finish may decrease

(finding replacements may be difficult). A downside for stainless, though, is the smudge factor. New finishes,

like black or matte stainless steel, can be more user-friendly (smudge-resistant) and still neutral enough to

blend in no matter what your kitchen style. You can also purchase front panels so the fridge finish will match

your cabinets—that seamless look will help a small kitchen look bigger.

Measuring Up

When you shop for a refrigerator, make sure you measure the opening where your fridge will go and always

allow one inch of space on the back and both sides for air to circulate. It's important that the salesperson with

whom you work takes

draws thousands of designers,

builders, dealers and suppliers

from across the country and

around the world to catch up on

the newest trends and launches in

kitchen and bath design. The 2016

show took place in Las Vegas and

featured 531 exhibitors.

each year, KBIS can be a lot to take

in, so we’ve pulled together some

of our favorite products and trends

from this year’s show.

The Perfect Steam Washer with LuxCare Wash and SmartBoost from Electrolux

commanded attention. Their SmartBoost technology and Perfect Steam Option provide excellent stain-removing power.

In the kitchen, steam also made an appearance in Gaggenau’s well-received Combi-Steam Oven. Its fully automatic cleaning system ensures the oven’s interior maintains perfect hygiene. The brand’s 400 Series Double Oven features 17 different cooking modes, allowing a variety of dishes to be cooked at the same time.

We got a sneak peek at Liebherr’s two new wine-storage cabinets, to be released this fall. The compact HWg 1803 is the size of a microwave and offers Tip-Open technology to allow easy access to the wine. It also offers an LCD screen for exact temperature control and LED lighting for a view of stored bottles.

the burning DIY question is, “What is it going to be?” Blogger Chan Vu purchased a rusty, wrought-iron rack at a

yard sale for $5 and transformed it into a beautiful nightstand with space to store books and magazines.

6 Simple Steps

1Smooth out the rust

and rough edges

around the iron rack

using a cut-up piece of

100-grit sandpaper. Clean

off the excess iron dust

with the bristle brush.

2Spray paint the

entire iron rack in a

well-ventilated space

(preferably outside).

3Cut a piece of wood

to � t the surface of

the iron rack.

4Sand the wooden

surface, using a

router to soften

sharp edges.

5Stain the wood with

a semi-transparent

� nish.

6Place the wooden

surface into the iron

rack slot.
