The Home’s Heart editor’sletter

It doesn’t matter how much or how little you cook at home. It doesn’t matter how big or

small it is. Your kitchen is at

the heart of your home.

Know how you can tell? Next

time you throw a party, check

out where most of the guests

end up. You’ll nd them

leaning against your counters

or laughing together at your kitchen table…while your

formal living room remains fairly empty.

And if the kitchen’s where the heart is, then your bathroom

is the home’s health. Every single day, every single family

member will visit your home’s bathroom at least 3 or 4

times. Sometimes they’ll even spend hours in it, taking

long restorative baths or primping to perfection in front of

the mirror.

These are the two rooms that can make or break how well

your home ows, or showcase how inefcient it is. Small

wonder these are the two most commonly renovated rooms.

That’s why I’m thrilled to put this particular issue in your

hands. Our annual Kitchen and Bath Planner has always

been one of our most popular issues and this year it’s

better than ever. Aside from the robust, fun-to-complete

planner itself, we’ve added a few new helpful articles.

On page 63, you’ll nd The Nitty Gritty article, which

outlines the stark (and often messy) realities of renovating

your kitchen or bath. Then there’s the extremely helpful

and informative Great Expectations chart on page 50. Our

friends at the NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association)

put this together for our readers to help you better

understand what you realistically can and can’t afford on

your renovation budget. And don’t miss The Nifty Stuff on

page 52, where we show you the coolest, most innovative

new kitchen and bath products out there!

All of this is meant to give you a holistic, realistic view

of what it truly takes and costs to renovate your kitchen

or bath. Consider us a trusted friend who is going to tell

you the truth and nothing but the truth about your home

improvement journey. We’re by your side, all the way.

Meet you at the kitchen table,

TO RECEIVE THE BEST LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE FROM YOUR UNDERDECK SYSTEM, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

First, there are four basic types of material available to choose from, including:• Vinyl – a material that does not age well• Galvanized – is steel with a zinc coating that can rust from

the edges• Galvalume – is steel with aluminum and zinc coating, but

it could still rust from the edges over time• Aluminum – offers the best option to avoid rust and

provide superior corrosion resistanceADDITIONALLY, TO HAVE YOUR SYSTEM LAST FOR YEARS TO COME, IT IS IMPORTANT TO:

• Use compatible fasteners to avoid galvanic action (or rust)• Have no obstructions which could cause water damming

and buildup of trash• Have the ability to remove a single panel to access areas

to maintain the system properly

That using hot water on your garbage disposal was a bad idea?! Instead,

you should only run cold water

when using your disposal. It will

keep any grease from liquefying

the cooler water will help prevent

Five popular kitchen styles to consider for your remodelChic

By Kathy Kantorski

Atlanta’sMost Popular

Style

TRANSITIONAL

When choosing what to wear, you rst need to know what

kind of attire—casual, business, dressy—is appropriate. In

the same vein, when choosing elements for your kitchen

makeover, you rst need to know the look you’re going for.

To help you gure out what best “suits” you, the following

are this year’s ve most popular kitchen styles. Which one

resonates with you the most?

Transitional The experts agree: Atlanta

homeowners love a transitional kitchen. This makes

sense, since this style combines elements of traditional

and contemporary design, offering the best of both worlds.

“It is a blend of today’s styles with traditions of yesterday,”

says Chelsey Wynn with Wellborn Cabinet. She explains

that these kitchens “dress up” simple designs with

different wood species, nishes, embellishments, moldings

and hoods. She also adds that a mix of door styles is also

common, such as both full overlay and inset doors.

“A perfect example of what we are seeing in transitional

kitchens are stained cabinets on the perimeter with a pop

of color on the island,” Wynn says, “or painted kitchen

cabinets on the perimeter with a stained island.”

Classic This is for the no-frills crowd. Wood cabinets,

stone countertops and a functional, straightforward

design are what most appeals to you. You know what you

like, and you like what you know.

If this describes you, a classic kitchen is

your style. In this type of kitchen, white or

natural-toned wood cabinetry abounds,

and there’s little deviation from one basic

color scheme. Added function in the form of

glide-out shelving and other organizational

upgrades are mostly seen behind the

cabinet doors. “I still see a lot of demand

for the white kitchen and bathroom,” says

Robin Lamonte of Rooms Revamped.

Elegant This kitchen style is for those

who enjoy architectural details, such as

cabinetry with molding, furniture-style

legs and ornate woodwork. Against a base

of rich-toned cabinetry (such as cherry or

ebony) sits granite or marble countertops,

with wood-paneled hoods over the

centerpiece stovetop-area, tiled backsplash.

Lighting—specically chandeliers over the

island—plays a big part in completing the

design of these kitchens.

Rustic Au naturale is the theme for

rustic kitchens. Cabinetry that shows

wood grain and natural tones is key,

along with basic, straightforward design.

Other natural elements, such as walls or

backsplashes that look like stacked stone,

exposed wooden beams along the ceiling or

reclaimed-wood oors and shelving are also

popular among homeowners who enjoy this

style.

Modern Perhaps the most

controversial kitchen style among

Southerners is the modern aesthetic

because it goes against the traditional

style that Georgians feel is their signature.

Comprised of sleek elements, straight lines

and often a black-and-white palette with

one bright pop of color as a focal point, the

modern style is most often seen in urban

residences.

To get the modern look, your focus should

be on solid colors. Avoid the appearance

of wood grain in cabinetry—if you still

want wood cabinets, have them painted,

not stained. Consider quartz or concrete

countertops instead of granite to ensure a

solid color.

According to the American Institute of Architect’s Home Design Trends Survey, more activities are taking place in kitchens, the “control centers” of the home. By creating inspired new sink designs, Elkay is bringing this vibrant space to life for homeowners.

In its new Crosstown sink series, Elkay offers nine new undermount styles and eight new Slim Rim styles. Each hand-fabricated sink uses 18-gauge, type 304 stainless steel, showcasing high-quality urban design.

The Crosstown undermount options include two apron front sinks, which slip over the front edge of the existing standard cabinet base, making installation a snap. If you want easy installation plus a sink that will help make kitchen cleanup simpler, consider the new Slim Rim styles. They do not require changing countertops, and when top mounted, the Slim Rim design makes it easy to sweep crumbs and water over the at edge and into the sink.

No matter which model you choose, all Crosstown sinks maximize your work space with a 17” front-to-back bowl dimension, a 9” depth and easy-to-clean 15 millimeter radius corners. These functional features make these sinks the stylish, simple option you’ve been looking for.

Crosstown Sinks: Stylish Simplicity With easy installation and cleanup-friendly designs, these sinks

Q If consumers wish to build the bath of their dreams,

where should they begin?

ADesigning a bathroom can be enjoyable as long as you

have the right inspiration. Go online to www.aquaticbath.com and view inspiration galleries under the “design center” tab. Once you have an inspiration, factor in your family’s needs and your budget. A Showroom Consultant can help direct you to your dream bathtub.

Q What is the newest tub style available from

Aquatic?

AThe brand new family of clean-lined tubs, available

in drop-in, skirted and above-oor rough skirted models. The collection features streamlined yet comfortable styling, which is an evolution of today’s popular minimalist design.

Q For the most relaxing bath experience at home, what Aquatic brand tub do you recommend?

AThe greatest tub style that Aquatic offers – and that we recently installed in our showroom – is the DriftBath, which is available exclusively on the Serenity series.. The DriftBath hydrotherapy experience

using a soft current, without any jet action or vigorous swirl bubbles. Up to 70 ports in the back and foot areas release individual streams of water that converge into a single owing motion to creating a soft blanket effect and gently soothe your entire body. This system is efcient and quiet. We love it here at PDI.

Q Some consumers are more “shower” people. Why should they invest in Aquatic’s latest tub?

AEveryone is always on the go this day and age, but I cannot tell you how important it is for your relaxation, health and well-being to take time for yourself. Investing in a tub not only has been

proven to reduce stress but also reduce anxiety and depression, alleviate pain and stiffness, eliminate toxins and stimulate the immune system.

Know Your Kitchen LayoutsKnow your kitchen. Before you even think about renovating, you must rst have a sense of what you’re working with. Or what you’re working toward!

Below, we list four types of basic kitchen layouts, according to the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association). All of these illustrate the concept of the “work triangle.” or the distance between the three main work areas: sink, cooktop and refrigerator. For maximum ef ciency, the work triangle should follow these guidelines:

Galley (Two Wall)The galley consists of two facing walls and usually is found in condos and apartments. The work triangle is ef cient, but the aisle between the two countertops is narrow. This option is a good plan for one cook.

U-shapeThe U-shape kitchen uses three walls, or two walls with an attached peninsula. This layout is very ef cient because it allows the cook to pivot among the stations, provides excellent storage and can accommodate two cooks. A center island often is included in the larger versions of this plan.

L-shapeIn this kitchen design, two perpendicular walls contain the three main elements—sink, cooktop and refrigerator—to create a natural triangle. The L-shape kitchen generally will have ample counter space and lends itself to the inclusion of an island.

G-shapeThis option is basically a U-shaped kitchen with a fourth wall, which is usually opposite the sink and contains additional appliances, a pantry or a desk. Generally one of the largest layouts, the G-shape allows for more amenities than any other layout.

• Each triangle leg should be 4 to 9 feet long, and the sum of the three should not exceed 26 feet.

• Cabinetry should not intersect any leg of the triangle.

• General traf c patterns should not interfere with the work triangle.

• Islands should have at least 3 to 4 feet of aisle on each side. Avoid placing the island between two points of the triangle.

Speaking of islands...wondering

where they are in these

illustrations? We asked

Brittany Gardner, Certi ed

Kitchen Designer and

President Elect for the

GA Chapter of NKBA

2015-2017, about

islands. Here’s what she

said: “Everyone always

wants to add an island

in remodeling (and new

construction) but it’s easier

said than done! There are

space requirements for

islands and homeowners

need to research those

requirements for their

own kitchen plans before

deciding on whether they

want to add an island.”

Did you know that over the past four years, home energy costs have gone up by 37 percent? Did you know that they are projected to go up by 11 percent each year for the next ten years? In the face of such numbers, it is important to stay educated about the different ways that you can keep your energy bills under control. Home Energy Solutions has several options to help keep your home warm, and your wallet happy, this winter.

According to Home Energy Solutions (HES), your home’s attic is the worst problem area when it comes to home energy bills. You can combat that with eShield™ Re ective Insulation. This product works with your home’s existing insulation, so there is no need to completely replace your current insulation. This insulation has the capability to re ect

97% of radiant heat transfer, to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Another reason your energy bills are high could be that your windows are dated and drafty. While new windows can be expensive, HES offers their clients the eShield™ Energy Re ective Glass Coating System (Window Film). This state-of-the-art technology transmits 75 percent of visible light and costs 75 percent less than the cost of replacing residential windows.

Home Energy Solutions offers many different ways to lower your energy bills, but the rst step you have to take is to call and schedule your free Home Energy Analysis today. This simpli ed process will save you money in the long run, whether your home is brand new or 100 years old.

Don’t dread your energybills anymore

You invest hundreds of

thousands of dollars

into buying your home.

Then one day—as a

result of sickness, an accident

or just plain aging—your home

doesn’t work for you any more.

Managing stairs becomes difcult

or a new wheelchair won’t t in a

hallway. What are you supposed to

do? Sell the home you adore and

have invested so much into?

Luckily there are many ways you

can adapt your home for your new

needs, particularly in the kitchen

and bath areas. Here are some

ways to make baths and kitchens

even more “user-friendly.”

Kitchen EaseWhen building new kitchens,

think ahead. Years ahead.

Consider not just your family’s

current needs, but your family’s

future ones as well. There may

be a time when a family member

with limited strength or mobility

will need regular access to your

kitchen.

“It is important to build kitchens

ergonomically, for all ages, because

it is never too early to think about

making things easier to use,”

says Angela O’Neill of Wellborn

Cabinets, Inc. “No matter what

the age of the occupants, features

such as ‘touch to lift,’ ‘touch to

light,’ ‘touch to open’ and ‘touch to

close’ make life a little simpler.”

(This is a wonderful feature to

consider even if you don’t have

limited mobility or strength. Being

able to tap a cabinet door with

your elbow and have it magically

open is also a convenient luxury!)

“Let’s look at a typical kitchen,“

says Monti Marsters of Totally

Accessible Homes. “The typical

kitchen will include countertops

that are all at 36 inches high. Kids

stand on chairs to reach them,

adults under 5’2” tend to use more

step stools than other adults, and

people in wheelchairs can have

great difculty in reaching items

on the countertops.

“Now let’s look at a kitchen

principles,” Marsters

says. “The kitchen

will have two or three

different countertop

heights. Many times a UD

home will have a second sink,

often in an island, which is at a

different height than the main sink.

This sink can easily be made without a

cabinet base under it, creating a beautiful yet

functional design. It can also be easily used by

children on stools or our friends that happen to visit

with walkers or wheelchairs.”

There are a lot of other new advances in kitchen technology

that can make your family members life so much easier,

according to Barbaro Ponce, owner of Adapted Living Spaces.

Some dishwashers are now designed as drawers to make

them easier to load and unload, and some ovens now can be

installed at a lower level, with doors that are hinged on the

side instead of the bottom, making them easier to navigate

around and use.

“Remember to install cooktops with controls near the front,”

Ponce says. And when possible, opt for glass top ranges. Pots

are easier to slide around and help prevent spills.

Don’t forget lighting either, says designer Robin Lamonte.

“Adding more lighting in the rooms is key to Universal

Design. Installing pre-lit switches to both the kitchen and

bathroom for those last night trips is important.” Try an

amber tone for this kind of lighting feature. Soft amber is

more conducive to keeping you in a relaxed “sleep mode”

than colder, more blue-toned LED lighting.

There are other ways to adapt your lighting for those with

dexterity problems. “If turning on lights is an issue, you can

have motion detectors that can turn the lights on and off

automatically as you enter and leave a room,” Ponce says.

Marsters agrees that lighting is key. “When you add lighting

under your upper cabinets to highlight and help light your

countertops, you are showing off your kitchen, improving

visibility, all while creating a workspace that helps people

with limited visibility better see what is on the countertop.”

The Adapted BathIt’s even more crucial to adapt your bathrooms because,

unlike cooking in a kitchen, spending time in the bathroom

is unavoidable. Luckily, there is a whole host of ways you

can adapt this space.

Simple xes include installing drawer guides that allow the

drawers to roll 95 percent out, versus the usual 50 percent.

This helps provide access to the harder to reach backs of

the drawer. You can also easily switch out any small round

knobbed drawer pulls and door handles to lever type or long

handles, which are easier to grab onto.

A more extensive remodel of your bath might

include the installation of a new vanity that has

room under the sink to t a wheelchair. Ponce also

recommends installing grab bars by the toilet area

and in the shower.

And speaking of showers, you might consider

installing a “roll in” shower. These have no lip and

extra room, allowing a shower chair to be rolled

right into the shower itself.

Whatever room you adapt, and however extensive

those modications are, know that this is the best

kind of “home improvement.” It’s the kind that

pleasing, but also more welcoming and more

comfortable for the people you love.

Universal Design (UD) is a term used to describe a building and home layout that provides maximum amount of accessibility for a home, regardless of age or physical abilities.

A UD home is one that allows accessibility for the majority of the people, thus the term “universal.” It is designed in such a way that an entire family may grow up and later retire in it. Instead of the one-size-fits-all-homes that were commonly built up until the 21st century, contractors and remodelers that understand Universal Design have started to build homes for your comfort.

Universal Design, when well adapted, it is not even noticeable. Take your luggage for example. Twenty years ago, only children used luggage with roller wheels. Today 99 percent of all luggage

sold has wheels on it. It’s a universal design that works very well and is used by the vast majority of travelers across the

globe. Well designed homes will be just as convenient and considered much more attractive.

What does “Universal Design” mean?

It’s all fun and games until you’re eating breakfast on a tarp. Homeowners are often seduced by home makeover TV shows that take kitchens from drab to fab. But the road between drab and fab is decidedly unglamorous.

Sure, the end result is completely worth it. Keeping your eyes on the shiny, new, renovated prize is one way to keep your renovation stress to minimum. Knowing what to expect will help, too. Here are some renovation realities... Money, Money, Money Homeowners are often shocked by how many checks they have to write over the course of a renovation. If you are think you’ll pay all at once at the end, you are sadly mistaken.

So make sure you have enough cash at the ready to cover down payments as well as “draws” along the way. Checks will soon be ying away from your checkbook like expensive little butteries.

According to Brad Cruickshank of Cruickshank, Inc., “On smaller projects, the percentage of total job cost paid upfront may be signicantly higher than on larger projects. For example, 50 percent. Many of these projects are on a short schedule and the contractor must arrive with all of the materials on day one. Many smaller projects also require large amounts of labor for which the contractor may need to pay weekly.”

Designer Robin Lamonte has her own budget-related homeowner story to share. “You must do enough homework on how much a kitchen or bathroom renovation costs. The ‘wants’ list MUST equal the budget. You can’t spend $20,000 on high-end appliances for a renovation with a $50,000 budget! I once had a homeowner rst purchase all her high-end appliances and then come to me for the rest of the renovation.” That homeowner had burned through so much of her total budget already. That’s why

you’ll continue to see advice like this throughout this issue: do your research, and lots of it.

An Inconvenient Truth Generally speaking, renovations ain’t pretty. Or quiet. Or clean. Or quick!

Even simple renovations can take longer than expected. “For a shower enclosure, allow one to two weeks from the time measurements are taken until the actual install,” says David Drexler of Drexler Shower Door of Atlanta.

Michelle Fee of Change Your Bathroom says, “The biggest issue we run into is that homeowners don’t realize the mess and dust involved in a renovation. The second issue is how long it realistically takes to completely renovate a bathroom from the studs up. Realistically, it’s two months from start to nish.”

That’s 60 days of unusable sinks, dusty tarps, construction noise and human beings tromping through your personal space. Before your contractor begins, ask them realistically how long the renovation is going to take…and then mentally tack on at least an extra week or more. That little buffer could save your sanity when you need it most, during those last lingering days of renovation.

Know Your Limits One of the biggest favors you can do for yourself is to know and obey your limits during a renovation. When you spend months poring over design magazines and dreaming on Pinterest, you get accustomed to changing your mind. If you’re spending the money you are spending, you should be able to tweak it along the way and get it exactly right, right? Wrong.

“I often have to remind my homeowners that once the cabinets have been ordered, they cannot change the design layout of the kitchen,” Lamonte says. “And I have to be rm about this! I once had a client go shopping for too-large refrigerators and ranges that cost him dearly. He was warned not to do this but did it anyway.”

As important as research and planning is, it might even be more important to make yourself stick to the nal plan. Lamonte’s client (who she calls one of her best) was lucky to have her there to help explain these mistakes. If you are DIY-ing it at all, you won’t have that helpful voice in your ear. So don’t do it. Stick to the plan and you could save yourself lots of money...and heartache!

A Look AheadWhat’s in and what’s out for

kitchens and bathsBy Kathy Kantorski

A big part of homeownership is keeping your home

updated, so it’s important to know what trends are

upcoming–and what’s becoming outdated.

This is especially true when remodeling your home.

You don’t want to make choices that will be obsolete within

the next year or two! To help you stay in the know, we’ve

compiled notes from local experts on what kitchen and bath

trends are going to be big in 2015…and what 2014 trends are

on their way out.

Shower or Bath?A hot bubble bath or being massaged by a

jetted tub has long been a way to indulge in

a relaxing, spa-like environment. But today,

showers have become the new bubble bath,

with a variety of showerheads as well as

steam-, light- and aromatherapy options

available.

“You still need at least one tub in the home

for the little ones,” notes Robin Lamonte with

Rooms Revamped, adding that if you must have

a tub for yourself or for resale value, choose a

freestanding tub. She explains that the new

trend is, “large walk-in showers with a built-in

bench and two showerheads, one handheld.”

You should note that this does not mean

spa-like baths are a dying trend (in fact, the

opposite is true). Instead, it’s the type of spa-

like amenities that are changing. “What’s out

for baths are spaces where you just use the

facilities,” says Bridgit L. Taylor with BTaylored

Designs. “What’s in is a place where you can

unwind and relax for hours with all of the

amenities of a luxury hotel—soft area rugs,

luxurious towels, ottomans to place a nice

robe, etc.”

David Drexler from Drexler Shower Door sees

2015 as a year for curbless showers, along

with antique mirrors. “I would also say that

brass hardware may be making a comeback,”

he adds, “especially unlacquered brass.”

Color Me ChicThe easiest way to update a room is to paint

the walls a new color—the same is true for

kitchens and baths. For 2015, bathroom colors

are trending away from neutrals and toward

a richer hue. “While earth tones are subtly

working their way out, golds are making an

entrance in a new, fresh way,” says Michelle

Fee with Change Your Bathroom.

For the kitchen, paint colors

themselves are a trend for 2015. Chelsey Wynn

with Wellborn Cabinet notes that the most

common paint colors for cabinetry will

be whites and other neutrals, such as

gray. Taylor agrees: “Clutter and dark

kitchens are out. What’s in is clean

lines, painted cabinetry and airy and bright

spaces that make anyone want to be in a kitchen,

preparing a meal or socializing with friends and

family.”

In addition to the neutral tones for painted

cabinets, Wynn says that homeowners also want

splashes of color on their cabinets to serve as

an accent piece in the room. Brittany Gardner, a

certied kitchen designer and registered interior

designer with the Georgia chapter of the National

Kitchen and Bath Association, notes that another

trend is two-toned cabinetry, where the upper

cabinets are a different color than the base

cabinets.

Backsplashes have long been the area where

homeowners can add a bit of pizzazz and

personality to the kitchen, and Drexler sees this

continuing in a new way: back-painted glass

backsplashes, where the paint color shows through

the transparent glass.

Gardner notes that mixing materials and textures

will also be a big trend for kitchen and bath walls in 2015,

combining “stones, metals, fabrics/wallpaper and styles

(traditional and modern) of cabinets and lighting,” she says.

Cabinet Changes“Kitchen design is still heading in the direction of transitional,”

Wynn says. This means cabinetry is trending toward simple,

clean lines and away from door styles with a lot of mouldings

and embellishments, although Wynn won’t say traditional

styling is on its way out. “’Out’ is not a term that we use

because there are still people that are in the market for

traditional kitchens,” she explains. This is especially true

among Southerners, though many are discovering that the

trend of glass-front doors is not the way to go.

“Our clients realize they don’t have enough nice stuff to display,”

Lamonte says. This speaks to the focus on function (rather

than pure style or display) in kitchens, which was a trend for

2014 and will continue into 2015. Look for cabinets with built-in

electronic charging areas and other customized storage. “Pots

and pan drawers,” Lamonte forecasts, “and lots of pullouts!”

Zone DesignTraditionally, kitchens are designed with a triangle in mind: one

point is the stovetop, the second is the refrigerator and the third

is the sink—the three most-used items in a kitchen. However,

beginning in 2014 and moving

into 2015, kitchen designers are

using a different approach: the

zone design. “Zone design is the

process of grouping together

kitchen activities to better t the

need of the clients—multiple

cooks, kid’s activities, etc.,”

Gardner explains.

“Instead of just focusing on

the range, refrigerator and

sink (triangle design), the zone

design approach focuses on the

kitchen as a whole, from the

new appliances and plumbing

xtures to the activities now

taking place in the kitchen:

homework, charging gadgets

and entertaining.” She adds

that the primary zones are

still based off of the triangle

method—prep, cooking and

cleaning—but there are also

auxiliary zones for things

like baking and beverage

and communication centers.

“Designers can tailor the

kitchen to the client’s needs

by combining zones and

eliminating ones that do not t

their lifestyle.”

Five popular kitchen styles to consider for your remodel

CookingChic

Atlanta’sMost Popular

Style

By Kathy Kantorski

TRANSITIONAL

When choosing what to wear, you rst need to know what

kind of attire—casual, business, dressy—is appropriate. In

the same vein, when choosing elements for your kitchen

makeover, you rst need to know the look you’re going for.

To help you gure out what best “suits” you, the following

are this year’s ve most popular kitchen styles. Which one

resonates with you the most?

Traditional The experts agree: Atlanta

homeowners love a transitional kitchen. This makes

sense, since this style combines elements of traditional

and contemporary design, offering the best of both worlds.

“For a shower enclosure allow one to two weeks from the time measurements are taken until the actual install,” says David Drexler of Drexler Shower Door of Atlanta.

Michelle Fee of Change Your Bathroom says, “The biggest issue we run into is that homeowners don’t realize the mess and dust involved in a renovation. The second issue is how long it realistically takes to completely renovate a bathroom from the studs up. Realistically, its two months from start to nish.“

The Real Nitty-GrittyBudget, Timeline and Inconvenience Realities of Renovation

Though the end result is always worth it…renovations ain’t pretty. Or quiet. Or clean. Or quick! Knowing what to expect can make the process much less stressful.

ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT DECEMBER 2014 63

You invest hundreds of

thousands of dollars

into buying your home.

Then one day—as a

result of sickness, an accident

or just plain aging—your home

doesn’t work for you any more.

Managing stairs becomes difcult

or a new wheelchair won’t t in a

hallway. What are you supposed to

do? Sell the home you adore and

have invested so much into?

Luckily there are many ways you

can adapt your home for your new

needs, particularly in the kitchen

and bath areas. Here are some

ways to make bath and kitchens

even more “user-friendly.”

Kitchen EaseWhen building new kitchens,

think ahead. Years ahead.

Consider not just your family’s

current needs, but your family’s

future ones as well. There may

be a time when a family member

with limited strength or mobility

will need regular access to your

kitchen.

“It is important to build kitchens

ergonomically, for all ages, because

it is never too early to think about

making things easier to use,”

says Angela O’Neill of Wellborn

Cabinets, Inc. “No matter what

the age of the occupants, features

such as ‘touch to lift,’ ‘touch to

light,’ ‘touch to open’ and ‘touch to

close’ make life a little simpler.”

(This is a wonderful feature to

consider even if you don’t have

limited mobility or strength. Being

able to tap a cabinet door with

your elbow and have it magically

open is also a convenient luxury!)

“Let’s look at a typical kitchen,“

says Monti Marsters of Totally

Accessible Homes. “The typical

kitchen will include countertops

that are all at 36 inches high. Kids

stand on chairs to reach them,

adults under 5’2” tend to use more

step stools than other adults, and

people in wheelchairs can have

great difculty in reaching items

on the countertops.

“Now let’s look at a kitchen

A Look AheadWhat’s in and what’s out for

kitchens and bathsBy Kathy Kantorski

A big part of homeownership is keeping your home

updated, so it’s important to know what trends are

upcoming–and what’s becoming outdated.

This is especially true when remodeling your home.

You don’t want to make choices that will be obsolete within

the next year or two! To help you stay in the know, we’ve

compiled notes from local experts on what kitchen and bath

trends are going to be big in 2015…and what 2014 trends are

on their way out.

Shower or Bath?A hot bubble bath or being massaged by a

jetted tub has long been a way to indulge in

a relaxing, spa-like environment. But today,

showers have become the new bubble bath,

with a variety of showerheads as well as

steam-, light- and aromatherapy options

available.

“You still need at least one tub in the home

for the little ones,” notes Robin Lamonte with

Rooms Revamped, adding that if you must have

a tub for yourself or for resale value, choose a

freestanding tub. She explains that the new

trend is, “Large walk-in showers with a built-in

bench and two showerheads, one handheld.”

You should note that this does not mean

spa-like baths are a dying trend (in fact, the

opposite is true). Instead, it’s the type of spa-

like amenities that are changing. “What’s out

for baths are spaces where you just use the

facilities,” says Bridgit L. Taylor with BTaylored

Designs. “What’s in is a place where you can

unwind and relax for hours with all of the

amenities of a luxury hotel—soft area rugs,

luxurious towels, ottomans to place a nice

robe, etc.”

David Drexler from Drexler Shower Door sees

2015 as a year for curbless showers, along

with antique mirrors. “I would also say that

brass hardware may be making a comeback,”

he adds, “especially unlacquered brass.”

Color Me ChicThe easiest way to update a room is to paint

the walls a new color—the same is true for

kitchens and baths. For 2015, bathroom colors

are trending away from neutrals and toward

a richer hue. “While earth tones are subtly

working their way out, golds are making an

entrance in a new, fresh way,” says Michelle

Fee with Change Your Bathroom.

For the kitchen, paint colors

themselves are a trend for 2015. Chelsey Wynn

with Wellborn Cabinet notes that the most

common paint colors for cabinetry will

be whites and other neutrals, such as

gray. Taylor agrees: “Clutter and dark

kitchens are out. What’s in is clean

lines, painted cabinetry and airy and bright

spaces that make anyone want to be in a kitchen,

preparing a meal or socializing with friends and

family.”
