Home improvement trends are shifting to meet the demands of modern lifestyles. The American population is getting older, but baby boomers want different things for their homes than past generations. People are increasingly seeking a connection to the outdoors, and homes that capitalize on the trend are
gaining added value. In the following pages, we examine these and other of-the-moment home improvement topics in hopes you will be inspired and empowered to make the best decisions.
In our special section on patios, porches and decks, we offer a glimpse at each of these outdoor living spaces, weighing the pros and cons as well as offering ideas for cool features, care and maintenance tips and more. We show how local contractors are not only creating new patios, porches and decks, but also remodeling existing outdoor living spaces to make them more functional. After reading, you will come away with a better idea of which outdoor living structure is best for your home and lifestyle.
There are a couple of buzz words going around right now in the home improvement industry that you may have heard about: “aging-in-place” and “universal design.” Not just fads, the principles behind these terms have been around for decades and are now coming into the spotlight. Both help meet the needs of aging as well as disabled homeowners, offering stylish home solutions that increase comfort and accessibility while also appealing to those without special needs. Though aging-in-place and universal design may be unfamiliar to you, there are a multitude of certifi ed home professionals in Atlanta that offer these services. It is well worth your time to take advantage of this expertise and begin planning a home that will serve you and your loved ones for life.
Whether you’re actively planning a home improvement project or just getting ideas, I know you will come away with some helpful tips and resources from our April issue. Enjoy!

Expert Q&A
A:
Is there an easy way to
remove mold/mildew
stains from grout?
The fi rst (and easiest) is to prevent the growth in the fi rst place. Mold/mildew tends to grow on surfaces that are moist and also have organic material that acts as a food source. Keeping it dry may be a challenge, but eliminating the food source is something that can be resolved by more frequent cleanings. If you are in the process of designing a space, consider products that are antimicrobial such as self-cleaning tile. To treat mold/mildew stains, one popular solution is to use a baking- soda-and-vinegar paste.

Buck Jones Nursery Celebrates 40th AnniversaryWhen Arthur “Buck” Jones and his wife, Mary Jane, opened their own business in Grayson, Ga., delivering trees and shrubs, they were simply hoping to fulfi ll the needs of retail and wholesale landscape customers in the area. Now 40 years later, the nursery that began as a one-man delivery service has blossomed into three Georgia locations with dozens of employees. To celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary and the memory of Buck, who was taken by lung cancer in 1999, each of the Buck Jones Nursery locations in Woodstock, Wrens and Grayson, Ga., will be offering special sales and promotions throughout 2012. Buck Jones, who served as president of the Southern Nurseryman’s Association in 1995 and was awarded its Slater Wright Memorial Award, was involved in all aspects of his business and the nursery industry. Today, his legacy continues with the help of his daughter, Laurie Fisher, who serves as the company’s president. Visit www.buckjones.com for more information.

A guide to building and maintaining the perfect
By Timothy Schuler and Tara N. Wilfong
We all crave the outdoors. It’s why when we go on vacation, we don’t just go to the movies and
then head to the nearest mall to shop. No, we plan to be outside—whether that’s climbing a mountain or simply relaxing on the beach. Increasingly, homeowners are fi nding ways to enjoy the outdoors without the expense of a plane ticket. They’re upgrading their patios with brick ovens or installing covered hot tubs on their decks. These types of outdoor living spaces are ways of bringing our indoor lifestyles outside. Fortunately, many elements are getting more popular and less expensive. Here’s how to tell what’s right for your home.

patio, porch or deck
A window to natureWhen Frank Pologruto,
owner of Decks & More (www.decksandmore.
biz), was asked to design
three distinct outdoor
spaces, he was given
one important guideline:
The space had to be
designed around an
existing picture window. A
focal point in its own right,
the large, four-sectioned
window required a unique
overhang to accent
its features. Custom
designing a domed roof
that fl uidly mimics the
curve of the window,
Pologruto created an
element that looks good
from the inside and out.
To retain the sweeping
views of the lake, the
builder installed large
custom-made screens for
an unencumbered view.
On the fl oor, variegated
slate tiles echo the hues
of nature as well as the
home’s brick exterior. A
side deck, conveniently
accessible from the home
and providing direct
access to the screened
porch, is ideal for grilling.
Descending the staircase,
the homeowners have
a patio that features an
under-deck drainage
system and fl uidly curved
arches that mimic the
dome above. “There
were many obstacles
to overcome on this
project,” Pologruto says.
“But, upon completion,
it is evident that all of
the obstacles were well
worth the challenge, as
this addition is simply
stunning.”

What’s your outdoor lifestyle? Before you hire a contractor
and gather your design team,
you need to make some
decisions about your space.
What is your ideal outdoor
space? What does the perfect
backyard have? What will you
be doing in it, with whom
and how often?
Next, examine your home.
What type of outdoor space
would fi t the existing yard?
What materials would
complement your home?
What are your focal points
and views? Once you’ve
considered all of the
parameters, it’s time to weigh
your options.
Patios, porches and decks
DecksDecks are perfect for the
homeowner who loves the
feel of wood and wants a
space off the ground. If the
back entrance is well above
ground level, a deck can be
seamlessly integrated with
the home, with an option
for adding storage or patio
space below. “The ‘traditional’
wood-deck approach is a
thing of the past,” says Bobby
Parks, owner of Peachtree
Decks and Porches (www.
peachtreedecksandporches.
com). “When I design a deck,
I make an effort to really
blend the project into its
surroundings and ensure
that it fl ows with the existing
architectural features of the
home.”

Outdoor oasisA well-designed deck can be the perfect solution for creating a seamless transition between yard and home. Embarking
on a project of this magnitude, MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers] (www.mosaicgroupatlanta.com) was
challenged to transform an outdated deck that didn’t relate well to the backyard into a stylish haven perfect for relaxing and
entertaining. “The homeowners had come to a crossroads where they had to decide if they wanted to improve their existing
home or upgrade to a new one,” says Rick Goldstein, registered architect and co-owner of MOSAIC. “In the end, they
decided to stay, recapture their lot and improve its functionality with an open porch, veranda and signifi cant landscaping.”
Creating two separate spaces—one screened and one open-air—MOSAIC emphasized the rooms’ natural appeal with a
warm, yet varied materials list. Tigerwood, an exotic Brazilian hardwood that stands up well to the elements, graces the
fl oor of both rooms, while stacked Tennessee fi eldstone provides a solid base for the entire structure as well as the outdoor
fi replace. MOSAIC also incorporated tongue-and-groove southern yellow pine beams and boards for the ceiling and PVC
railings and columns for their durability and rot-proof qualities.
“Unlike screened porches from decades ago, today’s versions are extensions of the home,” Goldstein says. “With vaulted
ceilings, beautiful furnishings and fi replaces, these rooms are extremely usable all year long, and they create that desired
connection to the outdoors.”

In terms of materials, the choices are vast. Pressure-treated lumber is still the best-selling option, says Dough Fritsch, director
of web and package sales at 84 Lumber (www.84lumber.com). It has a high structural integrity, is rot resistant and, in many
cases, is guaranteed for up to 40 years. It’s also fairly inexpensive. A small treated deck package, say 12’ x 16’, can be acquired
for around $600, not including labor, which will roughly double the cost, depending on the area and job, according to Fritsch.
“On average, our customers are spending about $1,500 for a nice deck with railings,” he says.

For a traditional wood-deck look, 5/4” x 6” radius-edge decking is a common choice, according to Robert Avery, vice
president of Atlanta Specialty Millwork (www.atlantaspecialtymillworks.com). However, many homeowners are opting for a
more refi ned fi nish to match the aesthetics of their home. “Exotic hardwoods, such as Ipe or Tigerwood, have become quite
popular in the Atlanta market not only for their rich beauty, but also their durability,” he says. “For those homeowners who
want a relatively maintenance-free deck but like the look of wood, composite decking is a viable choice. It’s available in a
number of styles and colors that have the appearance of stained wood, but unlike natural wood, composites never require
staining or sealing, and they won’t rot, warp or mildew.”
PatiosGround-level living areas such as patios connect families with their backyards and can be the showpiece of the home.
Patios are hugely popular because they add livable space to a backyard often with very little maintenance. Although the
patio can be covered or uncovered, one particular trend is the incorporation of an outdoor fi replace as well as natural stone
materials to emphasize its connection to nature. Ceiling fans and comfortable furnishings add to the ambience and ensure
year-round usability.
In-town transformationWhen Heirloom Design Build (www.heirloomdesignbuild.com) renovated a 100-plus-year-old Candler Park Victorian,
the designers were careful to artfully blend its century-old charm with modern ideals. Honing in on the home’s inviting,
neighborly appeal, the fi rm immediately removed a screened front porch and replaced it with an open, airy adaptation
perfect for impromptu visits. “We wanted to capture that streetscape feel that was so prevalent in homes from this time,”
says Dave F. Radlmann, CGC, LEED AP BD+C and CEO. “We retained the original tongue-and-groove heart pine fl ooring
and ceiling and added a porch swing for a bit of nostalgia.”
Continuing the transformation around back, Heirloom added an expansive deck constructed from stained pressure-treated
pine. Allowing for future expansion, they specifi cally made plans for a 14' x 14' area that would be ideal for a screened
porch some day. “In all of our designs, we incorporate opportunities for future phasing,” Radlmann says. “Particularly with
today’s economy, we are cognizant that many homeowners need to renovate in stages, and we help them prepare for these
future expansions.”

Homeowners are choosing larger pavers and slabs, which offer a more contemporary look and are easier to install, says Ken
O’Neill, vice president of marketing at Belgard Hardscapes (www.belgard.biz). Though pricing is dependent on the market
and product type, a general estimate for patio pavers is $10-20 per square foot.
PorchesIf you’re looking for more of an extension of your interior space, a porch may be your best option. While a front porch
certainly enhances curb appeal and harkens back to the days when families and friends relaxed on a white-washed swing,
many of today’s manifestations grace the back of the home. Often combined with a deck, porches tend to be screened-in
enclosures that capture panoramic views of nature and include the same luxuries found inside the home. “Today’s screened
porches aren’t the same uninviting screened porches from years ago,” says Rick Goldstein, registered architect and co-owner
of MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers] (www.mosaicgroupatlanta.com). “Now there is a purpose to the space, one
that combines a desire for easy maintenance and a connection to the outdoors.”
To create the perfect space, most designers recommend using natural materials that won’t date the project. Georgia
granite and locally quarried stone are common choices for their availability and iconic appeal, while rich-toned wood in
a variety of species adds warmth and depth to the room. Lofty, vaulted ceilings have also become commonplace, while
sumptuous furnishings, televisions, grand fi replaces and even wet bars capture that homey feel. “The whole idea is to cater
the space to your particular use,” says Dave F. Radlmann, CGC, LEED AP BD+C and CEO of Heirloom Design Build (www.
heirloomdesignbuild.com). “In Atlanta, the screened porch has become quite an asset, shielding homeowners from insects
and scorching heat and allowing them to reclaim their backyard in every season.”
Year-round comfortFor many Atlanta area homeowners, summer’s seemingly constant stream of sunshine quickly heats up backyard
entertainment areas, dampening the desire to head outdoors. In one such project, an exposed porch off a brick exterior
soaked up so many rays, it created an unbearable heat situation. To contend with it, MasterWorks specifi ed a set of fully
enclosed screen porches as well as a side patio for year-round enjoyment.
Transforming the traditional Georgian home into one with a more Craftsman-style design, MasterWorks used an
aesthetically pleasing palette for an updated look. Khaki-colored paint trimming the windows accents the exposed brick
and complements the smooth suede paint color used on the remaining brick of the home. On the patio, faux stone encases
a barbecue grill, which is easily accessible from the breakfast nook. With enclosed and open-air options, the homeowners
now have a variety of outdoor spaces that can be used all year.

Making existing elements extraordinary For owners with existing patios, porches and decks, there are innumerable ways to improve on them, and many of today’s
trends—things as simple as seating or as elaborate as an entire outdoor kitchen—involve strategies for increasing a family’s
time outside.
For the perfect porch, consider screening it in to create an intimate space that feels inviting in any weather. The best porch
will be one in which people spend time. Wall blocks can create elegant edges while also adding seating and other uses. “We’re
seeing professionals get really creative with the way they incorporate walls into the landscape,” says O’Neill. “Blocks can be used
to create steps, planters, walls, pillars, benches and more. Walls can also have multiple uses—a garden wall can double as a seat
bench, and a retaining wall can also be used as a raised fl ower bed for a higher landscape tier.” Other popular additions for decks
are food-related items like grills and smokers.
In fact, fi re and food are the biggest trends most professionals are seeing in terms of outdoor living, and a patio is the perfect place
for both. Fireplaces, fi re pits and things like brick ovens offer ambience, warmth and a way to prepare and cook food without
Room with a viewAn unsightly view of the neighbors’ yard prompted these homeowners to rethink their backyard patio. Although the concrete slab
was in excellent condition, the view of the storage building next door was enough for them to consider their options. Deciding on
an outdoor room, the homeowners worked with Portis Building & Interiors (www.portisbuilding.com) to create their vision.
Using the existing slab as a foundation, the builders covered the old patio with faux slate tiles rated for outdoor applications.
Once the footers were poured, a faux stone fi replace was positioned at an angle to create a focal point and block the unwanted
view. Finally, two skylights were installed to further that indoor-outdoor connection and add another light source to the open-air
patio. “This type of room is being installed all the time now,” says Molly Portis, co-owner of Portis Building & Interiors. “Even when
it is really hot outside, this room stays comfortable, allowing it to be enjoyed in every season.”

being stuck indoors. This also helps make the patio a year-round space. But such large projects require planning ahead and a
design that takes into account everything from electrical requirements and traffi c fl ow to the distance the patio is from the home.
In the end, merging a patio and deck may be the ultimate option. Archadeck (www.archadeck.com) vice president Rob Haislip
says much of the company’s business is moving toward combination projects that include both a deck and a patio. “In elevated
areas, building a deck above and a patio below increases livable square footage outdoors,” he says. “When considering these
types of projects, homeowners should work with a design professional to ensure a logical order for installation. Including
features such as an outdoor kitchen or fi replace or fi re pit needs to be well thought out during the planning phase.”
Whatever add-ons a homeowner chooses, it’s important to set a realistic budget. Though an owner may associate the size
of his or her property with an amount—thinking, for example, that a project for a small yard will be inexpensive—some
features by themselves can cost $30,000-$50,000. But many professionals are adamant that your dream deck or perfect patio
is affordable, because the build-out can be done in phases. In the end, translating your desires to the space will be the best

extending their outdoor season and spending more time outdoors.”

Highlight your home and yard with elegant, multipurpose hardscapesOUTDOORSOUTDOORS
By Laura Judy
When you start to plan your new backyard landscape, trees, shrubs, fl owers and grass are probably the fi rst
things that come to mind. But equally important as the fl ora you choose is how you incorporate hardscapes
into your yard’s design. From pathways and water features to built-in seating areas and multipurpose
retaining walls, hardscapes highlight your home and landscape. “We fi nd that our clients are wanting
to make their homes have a better street presentation, since that’s the fi rst thing anyone sees when approaching the
property, and fi rst impressions are key,” says Dave F. Radlmann, CGC, LEED AP BD+C and CEO of Heirloom Design Build
(www.heirloomdesignbuild.com).

Inside outBecause so many homeowners are
viewing the yard as an extension of
the home, hardscapes have come to
include a little bit of everything. Some
of the most popular hardscape features
right now are outdoor fi replaces, fi re
pits and outdoor kitchens. Many people
are taking these outdoor areas to new
levels, featuring everything from outdoor
televisions to built-in sound systems.
Water features are also a popular
hardscaping element. “In my opinion,
no landscape is complete without
some type of water feature,” says Laura
Guilmette, vice president of Unique
Environmental Landscapes (www.
unique-environmental.com). “There are
many forms, from a natural mountain
stream to a formal-style urn. No matter
which style you choose, all water
features provide the sound of water.”
If you want to include multipurpose
features in your landscape, rainwater
harvest systems are also a great
choice. You can collect water to use
on your plants while also creating a
unique, beautiful water feature. And
if you want to attract butterfl ies, birds
and other wildlife to your yard, water
features are the way to go.
Built-in beautyOf course, there are other ways for your
hardscape to multitask. “Bench seats
with cushions that are on hinged seats
make great exterior storage spaces for
outdoor cushions and other garden
supplies,” says John Kenna, owner
of Water, Color & Stone Inc. (www.
watercolorstone.com). “This is a great
way to extend deck use without having
to use closets or storage buildings
or hauling to and from a basement
storage area.”
Many people are also creating stone
retaining walls that double as seats.
“These are typically decorative walls
that are capped at an 18-inch height
to accommodate seating,” says Hugh
Dixon of StoneAge Stonescapes LLC
(www.stoneagerocks.com). “They are
often used as retaining walls to raise or
lower an area by a couple of feet.”
Another multipurpose feature is a fi re
pit that can double as a table. “Many
furniture manufacturers sell round
tabletops separate from the bases,
so we can build the fi re pit to fi t a
tabletop that can be added or removed
as necessary,” says Rick Kaldrovics,
president of Outside Landscape Group
(www.outsidelandscapegroup.com).
Set in stoneMaterials can cost anywhere from
$6 to more than $20 per square
foot. Natural stone is the most
expensive, as it has to be blasted from
mountains and shipped. While most
landscapers prefer natural stone for
its beauty and durability, many people

are choosing to use cast concrete
products, like pavers.
“One advantage to concrete products
is that they provide multiple
choices in patterns and colors,” says
Guilmette. They are also cheaper
than natural stone and can be a great
value if you’re looking for a low-
maintenance product that will last for
a long time. Pavers, like those made
by Belgard Hardscapes (www.belgard.
biz), come in a variety of sizes,
shapes, colors and textures. “There
are endless options, so homeowners
can customize their outdoor living
space to fi t their personality and
lifestyle,” says Ken O’Neill, vice
president of marketing at Belgard.
You can combine colors and styles
of pavers to create pretty much any
pattern you want.
When it comes to style, though,
many people choose natural stone
for its look, which includes natural
variations in style and color. “Natural
stone is going to give you a more
unique and long-lasting fi nish
than most man-made materials,”
Kaldrovics says. Of course, natural
products can be found locally, which
is a plus. “We tend to use a lot of
granite, which we get from local
quarries right here in Georgia,”
Radlmann says. Flagstone is also
a popular option for Atlanta area
homeowners. “We are doing a lot of
sand-set fl agstone for patios using
a special polymeric sand called
Gator Dust,” says Mark Schisler
of Legacy Landscapes Inc. (www.
legacylandscapes.com.) “It saves a
lot of money over a concrete base
or mortared fl agstone patio, and it
looks just as good. The polymers
harden so the sand won’t wash out,
and maintenance is reduced since
mortared joints often crack with
time.”
Combining elementsWooden hardscape features, such
as wooden decks and trellises, are
also widely used. They should be
treated with preservatives to resist
sun exposure, and while they still
won’t last as long as stone or concrete
elements, they create a nice contrast.
Combining all these elements will
create a warm, inviting outdoor area
for entertaining or just relaxing on
the weekends. “A tumbled paver patio
adjacent to a stack-stone seat wall
that serves as the edge of a natural
water feature with a stately fi replace
surrounded by a post-and-beam cedar-
covered structure creates a space for
all-season entertaining that you can
truly escape within,” says Brendan
Smith, landscape architect at
C & M Residential Services Inc.

Retaining wallsBecause level lots are diffi cult to come by in Atlanta, many landscapes include retaining walls, which can help create usable
space. They are used as both functional and aesthetic design elements. Here are a few things to know about retaining walls:
• Retaining walls carve out additional level space by pushing back a slope and holding the soil in place. They also relieve erosion
and drainage issues that might not have been addressed when the home was built.
• Retaining walls are easy to incorporate seamlessly into your landscape design, and you can get creative with retaining walls by
building them to be used as seating, a fi replace or even a water feature.
• If not properly designed, a retaining wall could collapse and cause damage to your yard or home, so make sure you have a
trusted professional to do the job.

Playing gamesAside from providing a relaxing outdoor living space, your landscape can also incorporate special areas for games.
Today’s landscapes include everything from built-in playgrounds for the kids to designated horseshoe pits and
custom-designed putting greens for the older crowd.

Invest in GoldThe benefi ts of aging-in-place and universal design home features
By Stacy Baca, OTR/L
Your home can maintain its beauty, its spirit and make a graceful transition into the golden
years, just as we all hope and plan to do. Think you’re too young to read on? Have just your
parents in mind? Heard of “aging-in-place” but think it makes a home look “clinical”? Think
again. Apply universal design principles to any current home renovation project and fi nd
yourself comfortable, independent and happy in your home, at every age.
“One of the keys to universal remodeling is to incorporate form with function,” says Richard Hoffman, owner
of Specialty Builders Remodeling (www.specialty-builders.net). “You don’t have to build a big wooden ramp to
the front door or install bulky grab bars.” Not when beautifully graded landscaping and elegant towel holders
designed to pull double duty between pleasing the eye and creating a safe environment can do the trick.
Many seniors don’t consider implementing aging-in-place concepts until after an accident or illness
rather than being proactive, according to Barbaro Ponce, owner of Adapted Living Spaces (www.
adaptedlivingspaces.com). Is your home ready for you? Turn the page for three renovations worth their
weight in gold:

Beautiful kitchens equipped with ease
From custom cabinetry to functional
fl ooring, the kitchen is a premium
opportunity for design elements to do
the work for an overall plan.
Everything within reach? State-of-the-
art built-in appliances such as stoves,
refrigerated drawers, microwaves and
convection ovens can be easily raised
or lowered to a comfortable height.
David Sturm, founder of Attention
to Detail Home Remodeling (www.
atdremodel.com), also recommends
front-mounted appliance controls and
side-by-side refrigerators with pull-out
interior shelving for effortless access.
Cabinets of any style can be designed
to conceal cut-out spaces that allow
users to sit up close, under sinks and
work spaces. Shelving can be easily
customized to pull out for convenience.
Entire cupboards can be mechanized
on tracks to lower or rise to differing
heights with the fl ip of a switch. Voila!
And don’t forget cleanup. Faucets with
extended, fl exible arms that switch on
and off with a simple tap add style and
ease to any professional-quality kitchen.
Places to rest, work and socialize? Plan
comfortable, seated work spaces at
kitchen desks and lowered countertops.
Built-in benches create cozy nooks
to rest on as well as to toast the host.
Dining chairs boasting graceful arms and
concealed non-skid footers provide both
comfort and safety.
Flooring smooth and even? Options
such as hardwood or cork are warm
alternatives to other textured or uneven
options such as high-pile carpeting or tile
laid in a rugged pattern. Scatter and area
rugs should be removed, opting for fl oors
that provide a non-skid surface such as
cork or textured tile.
Space bright and bold? Bright task,
glowing accent and sheer overall lighting
can be effortlessly controlled from
switches positioned throughout an
illuminated kitchen. Dara McMillan, co-
founder of the Greater Atlanta chapter of
the National Aging in Place Council and
co-owner of My Accessable Home (www.
myaccessablehome.com), also suggests
color contrast and clear visibility. Choose
deep, dark granite against creamy
cabinets or white marble against rich
mahogany, and select contrasting
dinnerware, utensils and fl ooring
material wherever it changes.
Spa-like bathrooms provide peace of mind From tasteful surrounds to glistening
fi xtures, the bathroom balances
relaxation, safety and beauty.
What’s new? Sturm boasts of the design
innovations that have emerged for the
bath such as “…gorgeous, decorative
grab bars disguised as a soap dish
or accent ring, touch faucets that
alleviate the need to turn knobs and
custom bench seating in the shower.”
Even if these bathroom additions do
not immediately convince you, Peter
Michelson, CEO of Renewal Design-Build
1. Smooth fl oor surface with no ridges or bumps to aid mobility. 2. Desk-height countertop and varying counter heights. 3. Floating shelves for better visability and access. 4. Upper cabinets house shelving units that pull down to counter height. 5. Touch faucet. 6. Pull-under sink. 7. Easy-access appliances: dishwasher with drawers and pull-out freezer on the bottom of the refrigerator.

(www.renewaldesignbuild.com), recommends
planning ahead by installing supportive
framework blocking around the bathroom’s
entire perimeter before applying drywall or tile
for simple mounting in the future.
Everything within range? Custom cabinets
tailored to your taste and needs include pull-out
shelving and cupboards with removable bases
below the sink so knees can fi t underneath while
sitting. And spa-like shower heads are within
grasp with fl exible extensions and easy-to-reach
mounts.
Ample space and accessibility? We all imagine a
grand bathroom retreat. Hoffman recommends a
5-foot turning diameter within the room. To help
achieve this, consider pocket entry doors or doors
that open out into the hallway.
Shower fl oors with a gentle slope to the drain
alleviate the need for a cumbersome curb,
and a grand walk-in entry (at least 32 inches)
creates expanse and ease. Still love a good soak?
My Accessable Home is a licensed installer
of Tubcut (www.tubcut.com), a completely
reversible cut to any existing bathtub that
eliminates the need to step over the side.
Further enjoy relaxation without worry by
including non-skid fl ooring options throughout.
Toilets, shower seats and other bathroom
seating can be design-savvy as well as enhance
comfort and mobility. Select premium fi nishes
and dimensions that are a bit taller than what is
standard.
Entries invite a warm welcome Come home to a well-planned entry that is safe
and accommodating by carefully selecting the
layout, lighting and more.
Bright, enticing entry? Lighting creates ambience
and navigability. “Entries should have generous
lighting such as path lighting and exterior lights
connected to motion sensors,” Hoffman says.
Connecting lighting to a whole-house monitoring
system that is within quick reach of the main
entry is another solution to consider, Michelson
says. In addition to lighting control, providers of
this technology such as Control4 (www.control4.
com/residential) integrate HVAC, security and
more into a simple, unobtrusive control panel.
Easy entrance? Add both accessibility and
curb appeal to your entryway by grading and
landscaping the walkway so that it forms a
1. Bathtub with bump-out transfer area, grab bars, fl ip-up bench seat and molded backrest. 2. Easy-to-reach fl angeless grab bar and adjustable slide-bar handshower. 3. Pull-under sink. 4. Smooth fl oor surface increases safety and access.

gentle slope to and from the house. Select materials that provide a smooth path,
and pepper in a pretty bench or two. Flanking stairs with decorative railings at
the entrance adds fl air as well as stability but, if possible, “at least one entrance to
your home,” McMillan says, “should be stair-less and completely accessible.”
Select a stately door that is at least 32 inches wide and has a fl at threshold,
advises Ponce. Complete the look by selecting from the variety of fi nishes for
lever-style door handles, which are stylish and easier to grip than knobs. Inside,
a shelf to rest packages and a welcoming place to sit for a moment can be suited
to any taste. Remove area rugs and welcome mats, and opt for smooth fl ooring
instead.
How to fi nd an expert A remodeler who understands how to marry your plans to age in place with the
concepts of universal design can help you turn any renovation project into one
that is at once beautiful, functional and grows with your evolving needs. Choose
a remodeler who understands these elements: “mobility, vision, ease-of-use and
safety,” Hoffman says. And consider the following:
• Do your own homework.
Understand your own health, including your past medical history, family
history and any current conditions. Discuss potential long-term effects with
your physician.
Familiarize yourself with aging-in-place through the National Aging in Place
Council (www.ageinplace.org), Fall Prevention Center of Excellence (www.
stopfalls.org) and AARP (www.aarp.org). Get information about universal
design options from the Universal Design Alliance (www.universaldesign.com),
National Association of the Remodeling Industry (www.nari.org) and National
Association of Home Builders (www.nahb.org).
• Ask for a copy of the contractor’s state license and proof of any current
specialty certifi cations.
Certifi cations such as UDCR (universal design certifi ed remodeler, through
NARI), CEAC (certifi ed environmental access consultants, through www.
accesshomeamerica.com) and CAPS (certifi ed aging-in-place specialist,
through AARP and NAHB) are great starting points but, as Michelson points
out, they are not required nor do they necessarily guarantee a quality
remodeler.
• Ask for references for completed projects that are similar in scope, and check
them. “Not only should you view the work, but ask past customers if the
remodeler stayed involved throughout the entire process,” says Ponce.
• Be comfortable with the remodeler.
A sense that the remodeler cares about helping you accomplish your goals and
listens intently is an important foundation for a solid relationship, says Mark
Galey, president of MRemodeling Services (magnetconstruction.com) and a
volunteer builder for The Fuller Center for Housing (www.fullercenter.org.)
“Aging-in-place honors the human being and their independence,” Michelson
says. “Building and design supports that, and, as a contractor, you have to
care.”
Ask yourself, as your needs change, could your remodeler be your remodeler
for life?

ShelterFROM THE STORM
Tips for protecting your home from severe weather
If your home survived the winter without losing a shingle, brace yourself—spring is here. April can be one of the wettest months in metro Atlanta with torrential rains and strong winds, followed by tornadoes and tropical storms in the summer.
An ounce of prevention can save you from having to make costly repairs, and now is the perfect time to hire experts to give your home a checkup inside and out.
Falling treesTrees can be one of the main offenders if they fall on your house or your neighbor’s property. That’s why it’s important to look for signs of decay before they topple.
“Atlanta is a heavily wooded city,” says Chris Heim, district manager of The Davey Tree Expert Company (www.davey.com). “We live in a forest, which is why we have all the tree issues we have.”
Hire an arborist to inspect your trees for defects and fl aws, Heim says, such as decay on the trunk or around the root system, excessive or unusual leaning and excessive weight on the canopy that creates an imbalance.

“If too much of the canopy has been destroyed by high winds and ice during the winter, you might think of having it removed,” says Heim. “It’s real important to have a certifi ed arborist look at your trees to give you advice.”
In Atlanta, any tree over six inches in diameter requires a permit to be removed. Check with your local government or homeowners association before having trees on your property cut down.
“The ordinances are designed to protect the tree canopy of metro Atlanta,” says Heim. “They just don’t want people clear cutting their property. It’s a quality of life issue.”
To fi nd a tree expert, check with the Georgia Arborist Association (www.georgiaarborist.org) or the International Society of Arboriculture (www.isa-arbor.com).
Failing roofsRoofs also take a beating during spring thunderstorms and could begin to leak if not properly maintained.
“Early spring is the best time to check the roof,” says David Friedlander, owner of Dr. Roof (www.drroof.com). “An inspection is a very inexpensive way of preventing damage to the interior of the roof, the ceilings, the walls and fl oors of the house.”
Homeowners should have a roof inspection once every three years.
“A roofer can tell if there are systemic problems with the roof by examining the life left in the shingles and by signs of nails coming out through the roof, if there is buckling plywood and deterioration around the penetrations and joints,” says Friedlander.
A roof should last about 25 years. If your roof is older than that, and shingles are loose, it might be time for a new one. Plan early because “during the springtime, roofers are very, very busy repairing and replacing roofs,” Friedlander says.
Don’t hire a roofi ng contractor until you have done your homework, he warns.
Make sure you are working with a trustworthy contractor by checking the company’s credentials, asking for
references and looking at homeowner reviews on websites. Also question the qualifi cations of the workers who will install the roof. Poor workmanship might not show up immediately, so be careful who you hire.
When it comes to selecting a shingle for your roof, choose one that is built to last. For example, an architectural shingle costs about 10% more than a conventional three-tab shingle, but it is thicker, heavier and lasts longer because it is more resistant to hail damage.
“Protecting your home is not cheap,” says Friedlander.
Flood responseIf heavy rain causes your house to fl ood, have it removed right away to prevent mold. Look for a company that can extract standing water, remove debris and dry your home to stop mold growth.
“It can get expensive if you don’t catch it right away,” says Donald Tibble of Advanced Drying Technologies (www.advanceddryingtechnologies.com). “If you catch it early, it could cost about $500, but if mold gets to crawlspaces, it can run from $2,000 to $4,000 to remove. We get a lot of that in the springtime.”
Mold removal from interior fl ooding is typically covered by homeowner’s insurance. Insurance also covers lightning, hail, storm and wind damage. But make sure fl ood insurance also is covered in your policy.
“If your pipes burst in your home, you are covered. But if the gutter clogs up, and water comes into your home, that would not be covered. Most people don’t have coverage for outside rising waters,” says Ingrid deCoteau, an agent with Sutter, McLellan and Gilbreath, Inc., which has locations in Lawrenceville and Cumming (www.smginsurance.com).
Flood insurance for outside rising water typically costs about $350 a year, she says, which is a lot less than paying thousands of dollars out-of-pocket to have standing water removed from inside your house.

The best defense against storm damage
is to have your home properly inspected
and maintained.
Hire a professional to:
❍ Examine the stability of your roof and
shingles. Damaged, loose or blistered
shingles should be replaced. If the damage is extensive, consider replacing
the entire roof.
❍ Remove debris that collected in gutters over the winter. Make sure gutters
are attached and don’t have leaks in them.
❍ Inspect the foundation around your home. Have cracks or imperfections
sealed. If there are low areas in your yard near the foundation, fi ll them with
compacted soil.
❍ Seal the deck to eliminate stains, discolorations and warping that could
compromise the safety of the structure, particularly during a thunderstorm.
❍ Remove or trim dead branches and shrubs that grow against the house
or are touching it. Also remove limbs that could fall on power lines.
❍ Make sure basement walls, fl oors and trim do not have water stains that
could indicate water is seeping through the foundation. Check your sump
pump to ensure it is working properly.
❍ Inspect underneath the roof and insulation for signs of discoloration, deterioration
or stains.
❍ Fix drainage problems in your yard. If your lawn is underwater for several days, it
could suffocate and die and create ongoing problems that could be costly if left
unchecked.
Spring Home Maintenance Checklist
Roofi ng MattersDo your due diligence before hiring
a roofer. It is not uncommon to see
roofi ng contractors cruise through a
neighborhood looking for business after
a spring hail or thunderstorm. Before
you sign a contract, here are some
questions to ask and things to consider:
❍ Where is the company located? If
you are given a post offi ce box, ask
for a street address also, and verify
that the company is located there.
If the company is in your area, you
might get better and faster service.
The company might also be easier
to contact if any problems arise after
the roof is replaced or repaired.
❍ Like most major home maintenance
projects, get at least three estimates.
Remember, the lowest price is
not necessarily the best or most
responsible bid.
❍ Verify that the company has
insurance by asking to see a copy
of their workers’ compensation
and liability insurance policies. If a
worker gets hurt on the job, and the
contractor does not have insurance,
you could be liable for damages.
❍ Confi rm that the company is a
licensed, credentialed roofi ng
contractor. Check with the city
or county clerk’s offi ce in your
community or the area where the
contractor is located to learn what
the requirements are for roofers in
that jurisdiction. Ask for a copy of
those credentials or licenses.
❍ Ask how long the company has been
in business. Typically, the longer the
better because contractors who have
a lengthy track record can provide
more references.

❍ Check the contractor’s references by asking for names
and telephone numbers of up to a dozen customers. Ask
customers if the contractor performed the work on a timely
basis, if he was trustworthy and if he did what he said he
would do within the agreed budget. Also fi nd out if the
work was performed to the customer’s satisfaction and if
any repairs were required after the work was completed.
Be sure to ask the customer if he or she would use the
contractor again.
❍ Find out the length of the company’s warranty on the work to
be performed. Some roofers guarantee their work for one year,
others longer. Be sure to distinguish between the workmanship
warranty and the manufacturer’s warranty on the product, and
get it in writing.
❍ Review your contract to ensure that the roofer will provide
a dumpster to haul away old shingles and related debris.
Make sure the contract stipulates how long it will take
to install your new roof and what the penalties will be for
delays.
❍ Contact the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) to fi nd
out if any complaints have been fi led against the contractor
you are considering and how those complaints have been
resolved.

expert tip
Don’t go with a heavily themed
bedroom. Both you and your child will
tire of it quickly.
—Cecilia Staniec, ISD, ASFD, national designer for Kirkland’s, www.mykirklands.com
If there’s one room in a family’s home that changes the most, it is likely a kid’s bedroom. As children grow, their styles and furniture need change. While some change is inevitable, the following choices will endure the test of time.
Trundle day bedPerfect for lounging, reading, sleeping and more, day beds are a popular option for kids’ rooms, according to Cecilia Staniec, ISD, ASFD,
national designer for Kirkland’s home decor retail chain (mykirklands.com). Add a concealed trundle, and you’ve got a great option for sleepovers!
Makeshift shelvingCubes that stack and align to create shelving units are increasing in popularity, especially in kids’ rooms where adaptability is key. For a green option, check out the new Yube modules, made exclusively from recyclable and biodegradable materials, available online at www.yubecube.com for $29.50 each. You can confi gure these modules to create tables, desks, shelves, room dividers and more.
Storage benchOne thing that a child will always need is storage. Great for storing toys in a child’s younger years to keepsakes, blankets, sweaters and journals as they get older, a bench that doubles as a storage unit is a great item for a kid’s room. Place this at the foot of their bed, and they’ll have a piece that they can keep throughout their life.
Bulletin board“Whether it’s a DIY project or a store-bought item, I love the function aspect of a creative bulletin board for any kid’s room,” Staniec says. “Keep party invitations, homework assignments or photos of friends displayed in one neat area. Plus, it can teach kids some organizational skills early on.”
Pillows, pleaseMost kids spend hours playing on the fl oor. Because of this, “extra-large fl oor pillows are a must for any kid’s room—from toddler to teenager,” Staniec says. “When you change the color and decor in your child’s room, get a new slipcover in a coordinating fabric for the pillows—just make sure it’s a heavy, machine-washable fabric.”

Notes
Spring is in the air! Garden centers will be full of beautifully blooming
annuals and vegetable plants, but plant with caution—April weather is fi ckle, and
there’s always the possibility of an early spring cold snap. A good rule of thumb is
to wait until after April 15 to plant summer veggies and fl owers.
Garden Maintenance
➤ April is the time to fertilize warm-season grasses (zoysia, bermuda and
centipede). Wait until about 50% of the lawn has greened up. Repeat in May and
June.
➤ Fescue can be fertilized in late April—then hold off until September.
➤ When mowing the lawn, raise the mowing level to reduce water needs. If
mowed regularly, grass clippings that remain on the lawn (not caught in mower
bag) will help mulch and prevent thatch!
➤ If you have an automatic sprinkler system, it’s a good idea to have an annual
audit performed by a certifi ed irrigation contractor. They can calibrate the
system for maximum effi ciency and suggest retrofi ts to ensure water isn’t
wasted.

➤ Mulch well to conserve water and cut down on weeds—
mulch also helps prevent soil-borne disease from
infecting plants.
➤ Prune early bloomers such as forsythia, carolina
jessamine, quince and winter jasmine after they have
bloomed.
➤ Azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias can be pruned
after their fl owers fade. Apply 16-4-8 fertilizer around the
drip line of the shrubs now.
➤ Once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 50
degrees, houseplants can be moved back outside. Make
sure that they don’t get ‘sunburned’ by being in too much
direct sun.
What To Plant
➤ Get the kids involved in vegetable gardening! Let them
each pick a vegetable, and give them their own container
to plant it in—tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are
great choices.
➤ Choose summer annuals that will provide beautiful color
from spring through hot summer days. Fertilize with a
granular slow-release fertilizer when planting, and feed
with a water-soluble fertilizer regularly (following label
directions).
➤ Mix it up in your fl owerbeds and containers—add herbs
to your garden. Parsley, rosemary, basil, dill, lemongrass
and fennel are easy additions that require almost no
maintenance.
➤ Perennials and ornamental grasses can be divided
and transplanted now. Fertilize perennials monthly
(ornamental grasses don’t need fertilization) with a
10-10-10 or a six- or nine-month slow-release fertilizer
instead. Make sure to water!

The thought of spring cleaning inspires
images of spic-and-span woodwork, glistening
countertops, leaf- and litter-free decks and serious
dust bunny hunts in every nook and cranny. New paint,
new planting and an impressive refurbishment of all
visible surfaces are the heart of the program. Every
few years, however, a little stealth cleaning is required.
One vital, but invisible, part of the home needs periodic
attention. However effective your heating-and-air
fi lter might be, periodic duct cleaning should be on the
home maintenance schedule.
Unless there are specifi c circumstances that call for
increased frequency, it is probably okay to schedule
duct cleaning every two or three years. Some reasons
to increase the frequency include: home occupants
with mold sensitivity or asthma, young children in
the home, adults homebound due to illness, pets kept
primarily indoors and smokers in the home. Naturally,
it’s a good idea to schedule a duct cleaning upon
moving into a new home or in response to interior
fl ooding.
In some ways the term “duct cleaning” can be a bit
misleading. Naturally, both the supply ducts—the
ones from the air handler to the vents—and the
return ducts—the ones leading from the interior of the
home back to the air handler—are the most obvious
components of the system and will require attention.

But so do the fan compartment of the air handler and any
plenums. Plenums are duct boxes into which the separate
ducts connect for distribution of conditioned air on its
return to the air handler. Duct cleaning that is limited
to running a vacuum hose into the return or into the

cleaning may even require some disassembly of the fan
system and certainly must include special attention to
the plenum. Some years ago, I inspected an HVAC system
where the ducts themselves appeared clean, but the fan
compartment and the return plenum contained enough
dog hair to knit several sweaters. Granted, this condition
came about due to an absent fi lter, but it was found in a
system that had reportedly been recently “cleaned.”
When qualifying a duct-cleaning contractor, be sure
to review the specifi c services provided and ensure in
comparing pricing that it is on an apples-to-apples basis.
The cleaner in the above-mentioned case might have
been a bargain, but he neither adequately cleaned the
system nor noted that a major part of the system—the air
fi lter—was missing. Not much of a bargain after all.
A couple of comments on the ducts themselves are
required. Rigid metal ducting with adequate insulation
wrapped and taped on the outside of the ducts will
provide the most effi cient and the most easily cleaned
system. Flexible, self-insulated ducting is diffi cult to
clean, susceptible to damage and restricts airfl ow. The
introduction of insulation board within the duct system
increases both catch points for detritus and likely areas
for mold growth. The long-term benefi ts of rigid metal
ducting, properly insulated, far outweigh the initially
greater price.
Don’t forget that clothes dryer duct while you’re at it.
Collected lint cuts down on dryer effectiveness and is
a fi re hazard. Getting both jobs done at the same time
should save some money too. Reduce maintenance and
save money; a pretty good combination.

Spring is here. Is your deck safe to use?
In the last several years there have been over 400 reported
injuries and at least 20 deaths due to deck failure. The
numbers are higher due to unreported failures. Recognizing a
deck may not be safe is the fi rst step. Most never look at their
decks or recognize the failure signs.
Consider that a deck must handle the weight of people,
furniture, snow, ice, lateral movement and uplift. All fasteners
that hold the deck together must continue to work so they
do not fail. Lateral connections are critical for any deck
more than 4 feet off of the ground. If there is any moving or
swaying of your deck, then it would not take much to bring it
down. This is a major red fl ag.
A leading cause of deck failure is corrosion of fasteners. Many
decks are missing critical connections, or they have become
loose. Wood rot, decay and excessive cracking of the wood as
the deck ages also causes failure. Never maintaining a deck
will guarantee failure.
If your deck is old, it should be taken down and rebuilt. Most
decks over 10 years old are in failure mode. It also needs to
be recognized and understood most decks built in the state
of Georgia prior to 1995 were probably built incorrectly. Even
today we are fi nding decks being built incorrectly.
There is a deck-building guide produced by the American
Forest & Paper Association (www.afandpa.org) that will help
those wishing to better understand deck construction.
Deck failures are going to increase with age. There is an
average of one deck collapse per week. Take the time to
walk around your deck, and look for the red fl ags. If you do
not know what to look for, and you suspect your deck may
be failing, then call an ASHI-certifi ed home inspector to
provide you with a condition report on your deck. I do not
recommend having a company that builds decks to also
inspect your deck. This can be construed as a confl ict of
interest.
Be safe, be cautious, and check out your deck today.

Shopping for Lighting and Lighting Trends
When updating your home, details and finishing touches create big impact. Lighting is a critical detail that determines the mood of a room. Whether functional or decorative, overhead or accent, lighting should be a beautiful part of every design scheme. Think of lighting as the “jewelry” that adorns your space and ties your style together. Today’s lighting trends include a variety of innovative fixtures. It can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to go it alone. Trust the experts at PDI to help you make decisions as you shop for lighting. Their personalized service and knowledgeable staff make all the difference. They offer the highest quality light fixtures in styles ranging from classic and traditional to modern and contemporary. Learn more about lighting as PDI consultant Penny Dunham talks shopping tips and trends.
Q: What are the hottest trends in light fixtures right now?
A: Trend-setting light fixtures include transitional classics with clean and simple lines, pendants with drum shades in the breakfast and dining areas, and mini pendants over kitchen islands available in just about every color you could ask for.Energy efficiency is a big trend, and incandescent bulbs will continue to be phased out.Replace the bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL)--they use less energy and have a longer life. LED bulbs and under-cabinet lighting are extremely energy efficient and should be maintenance free for years. The initial purchase will be more expensive but will save money over time.
Q: If you are looking to renovate, update or accessorize your home, what should you consider when shopping for lighting?
A: Ask yourself these questions--what will you be using the lighting for, and what size is the room or area? This will determine the style and size of light you need. Also consider color schemes and design style as you shop for fixtures. There are 3 basic types of lighting:1. General/Ambient provides a room with overall
illumination.2. Task Lighting is used to perform certain tasks
such as reading or cooking.3. Accent Lighting is used to draw the eye to
paintings, sculptures, etc.
Q: Exterior Lighting is a whole new ball game from interior lighting. Do you have any tips or advice?
A: Use multiple low light level fixtures instead of one very bright fixture. If you use just one fixture, the area nearest it is too bright and the areas farther away are too dim. Using multiple fixtures lets you put the light in the key areas of interest: near signs, by doorways and stairs, thus more evenly distributing the light. Outdoor lighting ideas such as uplights and post lights can help accomplish these goals. Also, don’t forget about exterior entry lighting. Exterior entry lighting is so important because it gives a first impression of your home. Remember to not have your entry lighting too bright. A really bright entry makes the walkway approaching it appear dark.

Expert Q&A
A:
Is there an easy way to
remove mold/mildew
stains from grout?
The first (and easiest) is to preventthe growth in thefirst place. Mold/mildew tends togrow on surfacesthat are moist andalso have organicmaterial that actsas a food source.Keeping it dry maybe a challenge, but eliminatingthe food source issomething that canbe resolved by morefrequent cleanings. If you are in theprocess of designinga space, considerproducts that areantimicrobial suchas self-cleaningtile. To treat mold/mildew stains, onepopular solutionis to use a baking-soda-and-vinegarpaste.

Bringing the
InsideOut
A guide to building and maintaining the perfect patio, porch or deck
By Timothy Schuler and Tara N. Wilfong
We all crave the outdoors. It’s why when we go on vacation, we don’t just go to the movies and then head to the nearest mall to shop. No, we plan to be outside—whether that’s climbing a mountain or simply relaxing
on the beach. Increasingly, homeowners are fi nding ways to enjoy the outdoors without the expense of a plane
ticket. They’re upgrading their patios with brick ovens or installing covered hot tubs on their decks. These types
of outdoor living spaces are ways of bringing our indoor lifestyles outside. Fortunately, many elements are getting
more popular and less expensive. Here’s how to tell what’s right for your home.
A window to natureWhen Frank Pologruto,
owner of Decks & More (www.decksandmore.biz),
was asked to design three
distinct outdoor spaces, he
was given one important
guideline: The space had
to be designed around an
existing picture window. A
focal point in its own right,
the large, four-sectioned
window required a unique
overhang to accent its
features. Custom designing
a domed roof that fl uidly
mimics the curve of the
window, Pologruto created
an element that looks good
from the inside and out.
To retain the sweeping
views of the lake, the
builder installed large
custom-made screens for
an unencumbered view.
On the fl oor, variegated
slate tiles echo the hues
of nature as well as the
home’s brick exterior. A
side deck, conveniently
accessible from the home
and providing direct
access to the screened
porch, is ideal for grilling.
Descending the staircase,
the homeowners have
a patio that features an
under-deck drainage
system and fl uidly curved
arches that mimic the
dome above. “There
were many obstacles to
overcome on this project,”
Pologruto says. “But, upon
completion, it is evident
that all of the obstacles
were well worth the
challenge, as this addition
is simply stunning.”

Highlight your home and yard with elegant, multipurpose hardscapesOUTDOORS
By Laura Judy
When you start to plan your new backyard landscape, trees, shrubs, flowers and grass are probably the first
things that come to mind. But equally important as the flora you choose is how you incorporate hardscapes
into your yard’s design. From pathways and water features to built-in seating areas and multipurpose
retaining walls, hardscapes highlight your home and landscape. “We find that our clients are wanting
to make their homes have a better street presentation, since that’s the first thing anyone sees when approaching the
property, and first impressions are key,” says Dave F. Radlmann, CGC, LEED AP BD+C and CEO of Heirloom Design Build
(www.heirloomdesignbuild.com).

ShelterFROM THE STORM
Tips for protecting your home from severe weather
If your home survived the winter without losing a shingle, brace yourself—spring
is just around the corner. April can be one of the wettest months in metro Atlanta
with torrential rains and strong winds, followed by tornadoes and tropical storms
in the summer.
An ounce of prevention can save you from having to make costly repairs in thunderstorm season, and March is the perfect time to hire experts to give your home a checkup inside and out.

Invest in GoldThe benefits of aging-in-place and universal design home features
By Stacy Baca, OTR/L
Your home can maintain its beauty, its spirit and make a graceful transition into the golden
years, just as we all hope and plan to do. Think you’re too young to read on? Have just your
parents in mind? Heard of “aging-in-place” but think it makes a home look “clinical”? Think
again. Apply universal design principles to any current home renovation project and find
yourself comfortable, independent and happy in your home, at every age.
Many seniors don’t consider implementing aging-in-place concepts until after an accident or
illness rather than being proactive, says Barbaro Ponce, owner of Adapted Living Spaces (www.
adaptedlivingspaces.com.) Is your home ready for you? Turn the page for three renovations worth their
weight in gold:

Crowd Pleaser Makeover by Innovative Construction, Inc., (678) 409-7195, www.innovateatlanta.comCOMPILED BY KALI MALLARD
To fulfi ll a request for a large space capable of feeding and entertaining friends and family, Innovative Construction put together a special recipe for this kitchen remodel. Redefi ning the space, the team had to remove several walls, one of which contained the main electrical cables, which had to be relocated. In place of the walls, strong LVL-and-steel beams were added, including one, which had to be disguised with a soffi t and crown so it would blend in better. Next, handcrafted custom cabinetry built in-house and outfi tted with stained glass to match a large window in the foyer was installed, fi lling out the space. Exotic granite countertops cover each workspace, with the slab on the wet bar being carefully cut so that the pattern of the stone continues onto the backsplash. The homeowners wanted to minimize the appearance of electrical outlets, so the remodeler installed them on the underside of upper cabinets and in hidden fl ip-down doors on the island. “This job was very detailed and exacting, but it was extremely rewarding,” says Clark Harris, owner of Innovative Construction.
