In Like a Lion... editor’sletter

March’s fickle forecasts initiate an annual tango of temperatures that sends me spinning. One

minute, I spy tender

shoots of leaves

peeking through the

ground and the next,

the poor dears curl

up, trembling from

an icy blast. It’s the

season for dressing in

layers—perhaps a sundress under a full-length parka

or Snuggie®?

Despite the weather woes, springtime manages to crawl

forth and beckon me outside, where I then note my lackluster

backyard and want to run far away. I wish I had a magic

wand to wave and swirl up a vision like those presented in

our landscape feature this month. Sadly, there’s no fairy dust

up my sleeves, but I’ll take the inspiration from each of the

projects shown in this month’s issue and figure out what

could work at my own house. When it comes to the front

yard, I’m tackling patchy grass, so I’ll be using information

about sod and seed from the first of our new “Do I Really

Need A…” report series.

Inside the house, I’m feeling pretty good about my spaces.

A few years ago, I took the time to learn a little bit about

shopping for a quality sofa, and it made a huge difference in

what I chose to purchase for our family room. This month’s

buying guide on sofas outlines some of those basics and

serves as a nice “cheat sheet” for making a selection. I’m

going to fluff some new accent pillows in bright colors and

toss them on my club-style couch for a touch of springtime

charm. Then, I’ll probably snuggle on that sofa with a book

and a warm blanket for another round of hibernation as

those final roars of winter inevitably head my way.

If you’re budget-challenged and have a small space to make over, have a seat. Literally! Adding a bench or seat with a few colorful cushions, plantings or fl owerpots is an easy, economical way to brighten up a

patio or small garden.

A comfy teak bench is placed just off the lawn to give this small backyard a sense of purpose. The addition of a colorful New Zealand Flax (foreground) adds pizzazz to the vignette and brings out the reds and purples in the river-rock border.

This tile landing and steps do more now than just transition a visitor from inside the house to

the adjacent concrete patio. The space went from bland to inviting with the addition of just one

teak armchair. The bright red cushion draws the eye to the fl ower colors of the potted Sun Parasol

Mandevilla vine in the background and then to the hot-colored fl owers in the nearby fl ower bed. Try

using a narrow wrought-iron trellis in a pot to allow a vine to bloom and brighten a dull corner.

All-Natural IngredientsHard-wax oil is made from all-natural ingredients. The oil penetrates deep into wood � bers to protect from within, while moisture-repelling waxes remain on the surface, creating an appealing matte � nish and protective layer. Hard-wax oil nourishes and protects the wood while preserving its natural look, which is often lost with the higher luster of polyurethane � nishes.

Minimal Maintenance RequiredSpots and scratches on hard-wax oiled � oors are simply repaired by buf� ng with a small application of the hard-wax oil. When Cindy

and Dale

Hughes

decided

to start

their own

consulting

firm that

assists local

businesses,

charities

and

community

projects, they wanted their workspace to

be a reflection of both their personalities

and their business vision. Once they located

the perfect building, an historic Kennesaw

farmhouse built in 1857, they next needed

to select a team to help turn it into the

office space for Jeremiah Consulting.

Establishing Jeremiah Consulting was an

entirely new venture for the Hugheses,

so delegating the duty of designing the

space to a professional team was the most

efficient approach. They researched area

interior designers, noted the portfolio

of local team Kandrac & Kole and then

became captivated by the nonprofit projects

to which the designers are passionately

committed. Designer Kelly Kole recalls,

“They chose us because our charity work

(which we share on our blog and website)

really resonated with their company’s core

values. They expressed very clearly what

was important to them, not only in terms of

material surroundings, but also spiritually.

They wanted their offices to tell a story

about them and Jeremiah Consulting.”

Maximizing the layout of the farmhouse,

Kandrac & Kole created very different

spaces for the upstairs and the downstairs.

The main floor, which includes a conference

area and Dale’s office, has a distinctly

masculine feel with his law books,

taxidermy collection and a rugged fireplace.

always had [their story] in the forefront of

our minds as we scoured antique markets

and unique places. For example, we found a

French church pew from the 1800s to put in

the foyer.” It was the perfect touch for a family

business dedicated to incorporating spiritual

development and community service into

Of all the design elements in a sitting room, the sofa often gets the most attention.

Atlanta-area design experts give us the lowdown on picking the right one.

Space it RightBefore you shop, analyze how you use your sofa (TV-watching versus

formal entertaining, for instance), what size � ts in your room (a sofa

shouldn’t overpower the space or block traf� c) and what style suits

your personality. The scale of the sofa within a room has a huge

impact—for example, a sofa with big arms and a high back can

overwhelm a small room. Loretta Willis, ASID, of Loretta’s Interior

Design, says, “Remember—your sofa anchors every other design

element in the room. It’s that important!” Patricia Walton, ASID, IDEC,

with Georgia Southern University’s Interior Design Program, points out

a classic shopping mistake, “People will shop for a sofa in a huge space,

like a showroom with high ceilings, and the sofa will look small. But

when they get it home, it’s massive and doesn’t complement the space.”

She advises considering the height of people who will use the sofa too—

their body size impacts what seat and arm depth you want.

Garner, of DLG Interiors, explains, “A

polyfoam-core seat cushion with a down

wrap can be combined with an all-down

back cushion or pillow for a beautiful and

comfortable look.” Lower-end sofas typically have foam cushions or foam wrapped in a layer of synthetic batting.

Understand UpholsteryAs far as durability goes, any fabric with a pattern or texture helps hide dirt. “A popular trend now is using outdoor

fabrics for interior furniture,” Willis notes. “It can take a lot of use without showing age as quickly—a great option

if you have young kids and pets.” And while leather sofas can be more expensive (typically $1,000 more than their

Whether or not you’re a fan of cold

weather, one thing most folks can

appreciate is the break it gives us

from yard work. Minimal mowing, no

weeding, zero watering—the winter

months have that going for them.

But if you’ve been ignoring a failing

lawn since the fall, it may be time to

ask yourself: Do I need a new lawn?

Immediate Grati� cation—Is It Worth the Cost?When you invest in a new lawn, is

it best to � nd a professional turf

company to install it? If you love

grabbing a shovel and getting your

hands dirty, maybe doing it yourself

makes sense—the steps to prep the

soil for seed or sod are fairly simple. “A lot of people want

to install their own yard, but they just don’t have the time,”

says Mary Kay Woodworth, executive director of the Atlanta-

based Georgia Urban Agriculture Council. “They want to hire

someone, but don’t know where to start.”

For some homeowners, the big decision is whether they

want the immediate impact of professional sod installation

or whether they have the patience to do the work

themselves. If you go with a pro, in literally a day, you can

drive off to work past a dirt expanse and come home to a

bright green thing of beauty.

No matter what, success is almost always measured by

what you do before the grass goes down. “Whether you do it

yourself or have a pro install it, the most important part is

the prep work,” Woodworth points out.

First, eliminate weeds and till in good topsoil or organic

materials, like compost. If you want to go the extra mile, test

your soil to see if it has a low or high pH (indicating that the soil

is highly acid or alkaline) or is depleted of nutrients. Get advice

from a local nursery about what problems can be alleviated

by adding materials to help your lawn establish fast and stay

healthy over time.

are Bermuda, Zoysia and Tall Fescue

turfgrasses.

Bermuda, a thick grass that goes

dormant and turns brown in the winter, must be sodded.

It requires full sun and, like Zoysia, is a warm-weather

grass (grows most in warm weather) that’s best installed

in late spring or early summer.

Zoysia is a slow-growing, dense grass that is less drought

tolerant than Bermuda. It’s usually installed as sod and,

like Tall Fescue, can handle some shade.

Tall Fescue, a cool-weather grass that stays green year

round, can struggle in the summer, says Clint Waltz,

a turfgrass specialist with the University of Georgia’s

College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “It’s

best installed in the cooler fall temperatures.”

Taking Care of BabyNo matter who installs it, when seeding, you have to be

vigilant about watering and maintenance for the first six

to eight weeks. Once the turf is established, Waltz says

it’s important to remember to water regularly (letting

it dry out even once can be the kiss of death) and don’t

subject it to too much traffic. “If there’s anything that will

negatively affect grass,” he explains, “it’s over-wear.”

What’s This Gonna Set You Back?Depending on the type of turf and your property’s

terrain, prepping and sodding a 2,000-square-foot

property professionally will cost $2,500 to $4,000,

Woodworth calculates. Having it professionally seeded

would be half the price. On the other hand, she estimates

a do-it-yourselfer can install 2,000 square feet of sod for

$1,500 to $2,500, including equipment rental.

If you go with a pro, start by talking to neighbors whose

lawns you admire. When you collect estimates from

professional installers, ask how long they’ve been in

business, whether they’re licensed and insured, and if

they have references to show they’re consistently good at

what they do. Good contractors will break down costs in a

contract so you can see where your money is going.

During my years working in the Atlanta real-estate market, I’ve

noticed firsthand what attracts

and what distracts a buyer. When

listing a property, I do a thorough

evaluation of the home and make

a customized to-do list of items

to be addressed before we put a

sign in the yard. It may be hard

to believe that a task as minor as

cleaning windows or rearranging

furniture can make a difference

in the eye of a potential buyer,

but those details really matter.

As a real-estate professional,

I have a trained eye and can

usually help my clients achieve a

look that will drastically improve

their chance of selling their

home. However, sometimes a

third-party professional stager,

who comes to the home to add,

subtract or augment furnishings

and decor, could be well worth

the expense. A stager looks at the

home with a fresh perspective and

has the ability to arrange furniture

and accessories to generate a strong

first impression.

While no two homes are alike, here are a few staging tips

that make a difference every time:

De-personalize the space: Limit the number of

photos and personal trinkets (framed pictures,

magnets with personal notes or kids’ craft projects

stuck to the refrigerator, for instance). Buyers can

be distracted when checking out your photos or a messy

desk. Instead, you want them to look at the house! Remove

those obstacles so the buyers can imagine themselves in

your space.

Declutter storage: Edit and organize your closets

and other storage areas, including the garage

and basement. Consider taking items that you

rarely use in your kitchen or closets to a storage

locker. You want the buyer to think, “Wow! Big closets!” I’ve

often heard a buyer’s feedback that “the house didn’t have

enough storage,” when, in fact, the storage areas were just

overstuffed with clutter.

Determine required repairs: Get ahead of the

final home-inspection process by scheduling

an inspection of your own before you list the

house—then go ahead with any necessary repairs.

Investing in the upkeep right away allows your house to

show better for a buyer.

Remember that you’re putting your home on stage—make

sure it gives a winning performance.
