ON THE COVER: Natural, elegant, dramatic and long-lasting. The East Cobb walkway shown on this month’s cover is all that and more, thanks to Belgard’s “Old York” Pavers. With the appearance of weathered clay brick, these pavers are a sophisticated choice for many different outdoor areas. Visit Belgard.com for more information.

It’s All About You editor’sletter
No, really…it is! That’s actually true for all our issues. We
create every feature, every
department and every blog
post with you— the Atlanta
homeowner—in mind. But
you are extra central to the
issue you hold in your hands
right now. Now more than
ever, it really is all about you, you and you.
Turn to page 25. Notice all that white space? We left that
for you to ll in.
It’s our 2015 Interior Design Planner and it’s half quiz, half
workbook and all fun. We ask all the questions you need
to know when you redesign a room. How many people use
this room? What colors do you love? Which do you loathe?
Even if you don’t plan on hiring a designer any time soon,
it’s always exciting to start thinking about which room
could use a good “shuzsh.”
It’s also all about you because we are currently putting
together our August issue, where we’ll announce your
winners of the “Best Of 2015” contest. For weeks now, you
have stormed our social media platforms, telling us who
your favorite local businesses are.
Who’s the Best Kitchen Remodeler in Atlanta? Best OTP
Neighborhood? Best Garden Club, Wine Store…and so
much more! You cast your votes and soon you’ll know the
results. (Psst! August is also our 14th anniversary Issue!!)
Other neat things in this issue include our driveway and
walkway feature on page 17. Hear from experts and nd
out what it might take to nally x that embarrassing
driveway or fancy up your front walk.
On page 48, you’ll nd some very cool bells and whistles
for your appliances! Our “Awesome Appliances” feature
highlights all the fun, new innovations and features
available in today’s appliances. If you haven’t updated
yours in a few years, you’ll be amazed at the space age
technology.
Here’s to you,

TO RECEIVE THE BEST LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE FROM YOUR UNDERDECK SYSTEM, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
First, there are four basic types of material available to choose from, including:• Vinyl – a material that does not age well• Galvanized – is steel with a zinc coating that can rust from
the edges• Galvalume – is steel with aluminum and zinc coating, but
it could still rust from the edges over time• Aluminum – offers the best option to avoid rust and
provide superior corrosion resistanceADDITIONALLY, TO HAVE YOUR SYSTEM LAST FOR YEARS TO COME, IT IS IMPORTANT TO:
• Use compatible fasteners to avoid galvanic action (or rust)• Have no obstructions which could cause water damming
and buildup of trash• Have the ability to remove a single panel to access areas
to maintain the system properly

Marietta Square
Say “historical Atlanta neighborhood” to anyone who’s lived here for awhile, and most folks will instantly think of the Marietta Square. That’s not surprising, considering Marietta was established before Atlanta ever was! This month we lingered in this historical, beautiful shopping district and found some fantastic home décor and accessories.

Viking Buckhead Showroom to Open SoonBack in the 1980s, Fred Carl, Jr. had a vision. He couldn’t nd the range he wanted
for his home...so he designed his own! And thus, the Viking line was born. The
vision of the Viking Buckhead Showroom is to become a destination for the
appliance community in the Southeast. It will train dealers and it will become a
resource center for architects, builders and designers alike. The showroom will
also allow professionals to keep up to date on the latest product information,
host industry events and meet with clients. Best of all, customers will be able to
experience the latest the appliance industry has to offer.
The showroom will be open Monday to Friday from 9-5 pm and by appointment
on Saturday throughout the summer with a Grand Opening coming after Labor
Day. See VikingDistributingEast.com for more information.

Expert Q&A
I can’t afford to
replace everything
in my home. How can I
work with what I have and
transform my space?
Many people feel they
must start from
scratch in order to achieve a
designer look. This is not true!
Great design is all about layers.
Start by assessing the current
furniture in the space. Replace
your least favorite piece to
really build a clean foundation
for the room.
Next, hang some beautiful
wallpaper or a crisp pair of
tailored draperies. This will
brighten up your space and
create a statement.
For the nal layer, add a
coordinating set of throw
pillows to the sofa or bed, and
all of a sudden the entire area
will look well thought out and
pulled together.
It never ceases to amaze me
how the addition of a little
color and pattern can breathe
new life into a space.

Dear Image Doors,
The real testimony for your company is that you always responded to me, which I respect. Even if it’s not good news, it’s honorable to respond. However, so many people in the construction business today do not stand behind their product or keep their word. Too many contractors do not really care about quality service. You have proven to be different from the pack with superior attitude and service. You actually followed up on your installer and service tech’s work.
I had other new garage doors installed for my house renovation at about the same time that the Carriage House Door replaced my old garage door. Your door looks much better, so much more substantial quality and actually costs a little less. How much more can I say? You should defi nitely use me for a satisfi ed customer reference. The Way
HomeBeautify your driveway and walkways with the newest innovations for a lasting rst impression
By Kathy Kantorski
When you arrive home
every day, what do
you see rst?
Are you happy with your
home’s rst impression,
or could it use some
improvement? If your answer
is the latter, it’s time to take a
hard look at your curb appeal,
and your driveway and front
walkways are a great place
to start. After all, it’s not only
important to “wow” your
neighbors and guests, but
you should be able to “wow”
yourself too!
Eco-conscious optionsThe experts agree: permeable-
paver driveways are the best
option for homeowners
concerned with environmental
friendliness. “When installed
in a best-practices method
(with an underlayment of
aggregates without ne
particles), the permeable

paver system absorbs rain and directs it into the
ground below,” explains Walt Steele with Pine Hall
Brick Company. “This helps the environment, as a
conventional hard surface like concrete enables
rainwater to carry pollutants to the nearest stream,
while a permeable surface directs in into the ground,
where it is naturally ltered.” Another benet of the
permeable-paver system is its durability and ease of
repair. “If a concrete or asphalt driveway or walkway
cracks, not even a patch will hide the unsightly
blemish left behind,” says David Rice with Oldcastle,
Belgard’s parent company. “Belgard permeable
pavers are constructed in a way that reduces the
chance of cracking and damage; and because these
pavers are placed individually, even if a single paver
cracks, it can be replaced without issue and at a low
cost.”
Of course, permeable paver systems can be
composed of a variety of paver materials, which
can also have eco-friendly attributes. A great classic
option, the all-clay paver, is engineered to last for
decades and is made out of two simple materials: clay and
water, both abundant natural resources. Then, there’s the
new composite paver, like those made by AZEK Pavers
($8 to $9 per square foot), which take eco-consciousness one
step further. Made of 95 percent post-consumer recycled
materials, including scrap tires and plastics, AZEK Pavers
contribute more toward LEED certication than many
other pavers in the market, and have the physical strength,
durability and appearance to rival concrete pavers.
High designBringing interior design to
outdoor living areas has become
a popular trend, and now you can
do the same for your driveway
and walkways with Belgard
Porcelain Pavers. “The newest line
of porcelain pavers is imported
exclusively from Italy by Mirage,”
Rice says. “With an endless
array of color schemes, shapes
and sizes, these pavers can
have a wood, stone or
metal aesthetic appeal.
Porcelain pavers are
also frost resistant,
skid resistant,
durable and easy to
clean, and they can
be laid onto grass,
gravel, dirt and sand
with ease. They are
perfect for a home’s high-
trafc areas like walkways and

Concrete enhancementAre you looking to enhance your current driveway and
walkways rather than replace them altogether?
Joe Wilson of CTI of Georgia notes that there are several great
options for doing just that. First, you can have aprons installed
on the end of the driveway, giving a brick-looking accent to
add interest. Second, you can treat your concrete driveway
and walkways with an acid stain. “Concrete accepts the stain
in different degrees of color intensity, creating a multi-hued
variation,” Wilson explains. And third, you can have an acrylic
overlay installed on your concrete, changing the at, plain slab
to one with patterns similar to brick and stone.
Complement your homeWhen choosing a driveway material, it’s crucial to add a
foreground that accompanies the architectural design of
your house. “The hottest home style today is a cottage or
craftsman that uses a mixture of different materials, creating
a warm feel and rich texture,” Steele notes. In line with this
architectural style, he says, “We’ve seen a big increase in
the demand for rumbled pavers ($2.50 to $3.25), which are
tumbled after ring to achieve a 100-year-old appearance
with a new product.”
For a traditional style home with sharper lines and angles,
he recommends a beveled-edge paver. “The main point is

to consider your driveway as an extension of your home
versus a utilitarian surface to drive a car on,” Steele says.
He adds that clay pavers are often the choice of designers
looking to add a classic appeal. “Whether it’s a historic
district in a downtown area, a college campus or a stately
home, the aesthetic of clay pavers is as much at home in
Boston in the 1700s as it is in Atlanta today.”
Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot
With the string of bitter cold, snowy winters Atlanta has been having, homeowners are turning to heating systems to melt snow and hazardous ice from
their driveways, eliminating the need for a shovel. Made by EasyHeat, a Sno*Melter Cable Kit comes pre-sized for easy installation underneath concrete or pavers. Romy Sheynis with EasyHeat says, “There is no need to shovel, snow-blow or spread chemicals ever again.”
Color Tips• ric color pavers add warmth to wood or stone houses
• Gray tone pavers with bric houses eliminate the urge to match everything

If you answered mostly As, your style is:
traditionalThe most formal of all interior design styles, traditional spaces have separate rooms and symmetrical designs. Architectural elements include large moulding, paneling and/or wainscoting. Color palettes are full of maroons, blues and greens, and furnishings are comfortable and inviting, yet clean and proper. Sofas and lounges have rounded arms and skirts, and tables have carved legs. Artwork lls the walls and accessories ll bookcases and tabletops. “The traditionalists are like Old Marietta people,” describes Cheryl Draa, a residential interior designer for people in transition. “They probably have a silhouette on their wall somewhere, and a few things lying around with their monogram on them.”
If you answered mostly Bs, your style is:
transitionalForming a steady bridge between traditional and modern styles, transitional interior design enhances the former while softening the latter. A muted palette of off-whites, grays, browns, charcoals and beiges dominate, combined with classic pieces with contemporary details to create “an essence of detailed delicacy,” as PIpa Bradbury of Pipa Bradbury Design describes. Unstructured-looking pieces and some metal or wrought iron are also popular among transitionalists. “They love the look of Restoration Hardware, shop online a lot and pride themselves in knowing what they like, but don’t really know how to make it all work together,” Draa notes. Interior designer Kim Majure also describes this style as “Rened Rustic,” noting that the trend for organic or green materials is impacting this design style.
If you answered mostly Cs, your style is:
contemporaryCharacterized by less-formal, open spaces, contemporary interiors display mostly neutral colors—except for the occasional bold accent. Furnishings and accessories are minimal, sofas have lower proportions and the space offers clean, sleek lines. Those on the extreme end of the spectrum enjoy a cold feeling to their interiors, but most others are looking for a balance between stylish and comfortable. Lighting is concealed, creating subtle, ambient glows, with a few xtures acting as featured elements. “Artwork is highlighted in these designs, forming the character of the interior amongst a highly sophisticated backdrop,” Bradbury says.
If you answered mostly Ds, your style is:
southern cottageThink white-painted kitchens with weathered/distressed details, at weave rugs, heart-pine wood and galvanized metals, and you’ve pictured this interior design’s style. It’s popular among vacation homes and those who prefer a very livable, cozy, relaxed vibe. “Soft hues, crisp whites and faded orals dominate the palette, while vintage furnishings and ea market nds add quirky style,” Majure describes. This style is also similar to French Country or Farmhouse styles, where furnishings and fabrics are traditional though a bit mismatched, with some oral accents. “Mouldings are a must, plus walls may have beadboard or a faux nish to make them look weathered,” says Paige Hudgins of Paige Hudgins Interior Design.
The main furnishing in my front entryway:
a. A wood foyer table with a oral arrangement on top
b. A wrought iron coat-and-umbrella rack
c. A wall mirror
d. A storage bench with distressed nish and cushioned seating
How would you handle downsizing?
a. It’d be very difcult for me; many of my furnishings and décor have sentimental value
b. I’d do fairly well in getting rid of most items, and I’d turn the situation into an opportunity to decorate a new space
c. I don’t have a lot of excess, so I wouldn’t have trouble tting most of my furnishings into a new space and selling the pieces that don’t t
d. I’d have a lot of items to get rid of, and I would be concerned with ensuring they were sold for a fair price
My bedroom:
a. Is a large space with a matching dresser, armoire and bed set, heavy draperies and family heirlooms that decorate the space
b. Is stylish yet comfortable, with store-bought décor and neutral-colored walls
c. Has brightly colored bedding, ambient lighting and minimal furnishings
d. Cozy is the best word to describe my bedroom; it’s on the smaller side, my bedding is patterned in pale colors with plenty of pillows and I have a dresser with distressed nish
The item that I most cherish:
a. A piece of furnishing or décor that my late grandmother passed down to me
b. A furnishing made from reclaimed wood
c. An expensive art piece displayed prominently in my living area
d. An oversized daybed swing full of uffy pillows
My favorite upholstered furnishing:
a. A cushy leather recliner
b. A wooden bench with linen cushions
c. An Eames chair and matching ottoman
d. A cotton slipcovered couch

Pinterest to the Rescue!
While it is still common to leaf through magazines and rip out pages for design inspiration, there are also digital ways to organize your design dreams. The most popular online tool of its kind is Pinterest, a web-based virtual pinboard.Often, our clients have dif culty describing what it is exactly they’re interested in, but a picture is worth a thousand words.
Tip: If you’ve never tried Pinterest and don’t know how to get started, fi nd a link to Pinterest via our website EnhanceFloors.com. Once you join and create your own ‘pinboard’ you can “repin” images, “like” photos or “follow” celebrities, companies and other interesting boards.
You’ll now have access to thousands of inspiring photos! For instance, if you are thinking about new hardwood oors, simply search “Hardwood Floors” and you’ll see boards and pins from around the world. Repin any you love to your pinboard for future reference!
Create separate boards for each of your projects. As you see pictures that you like, pin to your board. If you have a smart phone or tablet, download the Pinterest app and you now have your favorites with you everywhere you go.
So bring your pins into our showroom! Show us the pins you like, for instance a great backsplash design, and we will be able to take you to a similar product in our store. Every day we discover new and helpful ways to use Pinterest to help make your dream home a reality!

Q: What are the benefi ts of task lighting? A: Think of task lighting as “spotlighting.”
Task lighting can make a huge impact in kitchen lighting because it highlights speci c points of visual interest such as the sparkle of a backsplash, or the inherent beauty of granite countertops. It also adds light to ll in where general lighting falls off, increasing the overall brightness of the kitchen. This makes your kitchen actually look bigger! Finally, task lighting can be atmospheric, subtly dramatic and relaxing.
Q: What are the most common kinds of task lighting and what should I look for when shopping for them?A: Under cabinet lighting is probably the most popular kind of kitchen task lighting. When choosing your under-cabinet lighting, you want to keep things slim and low pro le, to ensure the xture “disappears’’ under the cabinet frame. A good rule of thumb is to choose xtures no “taller” than 1", which helps hide them behind the frame of upper cabinets. If you have frameless cabinets, look for xtures that have no light emitting from the leading edge, which can cause uncomfortable glare.
Q: Which fi xtures are the easiest to install?A: The simplest installation is de nitely xtures with the power connected to one xture. This way, multiple xtures can be
powered by simply linking cables or by using direct end-to-end connections.
Q: What about layout considerations? A: When installing, always remember to place the light source toward the front edge of each cabinet. This way light will be distributed evenly around the entire counter area. Consider an LED complete under cabinet xture, which allows easy front-of-cabinet installation with diffuse dimmable LED light.
Q: How do I choose under cabinet lighting? A: There are four types:1. T4 Fluorescent Strips: These 1/2” diameter strips make for a very sleek xture with no delay once the switch is ipped, and a hue that is much improved.
2. Puck Lights: These hockey puck shaped xtures are a favorite due to their long-lasting, battery operated and easy-to-install LED bulbs. No hardwiring required.
3. LED Strips: While these have a long life span, dependent upon your taste, you may not prefer this strips cool hue.
4. LED Rope or Tape: These extremely thin and easy-to-install xtures are very discreet. Although they do not output as much light as other options, they are still very attering for any kitchen.”

Neolith: The Revolutionary Sintered Compact SurfaceQ: What is Neolith?
A: A revolutionary sintered compact surface natural product made with clays, feldspar, quartz and other mineral oxides. This high-tech proprietary process consists of exposing each raw material to extreme pressures and temperatures that resemble the same method used to create natural stones.
Q: What makes this product so revolutionary?
• : There are more than 40 inspired designs available in the most exquisite marbles and precious stones, metals, woods, textiles, industrial elements and solid colors.
• : Neolith is resistant to scratches, stains, extreme temperatures, freeze, thaw, UV-rays, harsh chemicals and so much more.
• : Neolith varies in size and can be as thin or thick as 1/8”, 1/4” or 1/2”.
: While Neolith is 100 percent natural, 52 percent of its contents come from recycled materials. This grants LEED points when used in construction.
A: Neolith can be used as a countertop (indoor or outdoor) or over tile, oors, walls, wall cladding, ooring, furniture and exterior facades.
Q: What kind of care/maintenance does Neolith require? A: Once installed, Neolith requires no special care or
maintenance. It can be washed with warm water and detergent, although it is not required. Avoid products containing hydrouoric acid.
Stone Center is a stone distributor featuring an exotic selection of stones from around the world. With the largest selection of Soapstone slabs, we are also proud to be the exclusive distributor of top brand surfaces, such as Vetrazzo, Compac Quartz and Neolith.

Consider the lifespan of your typical household
appliance. On average, a refrigerator can last up to
15 years. A dishwasher can function well for up to
10 years. The same goes for your washer and dryer.
Now think about how much can change in a decade. If it’s
nally time to replace one or more of your old appliances,
you’ll undoubtedly be amazed by the options available to you
today. Thanks to innovation and technology, the standard
devices that you and your family depend on now feature a
host of bells and whistles that not only will delight you, but
they’ll also help you streamline your daily living.
“There is truly an appliance for every need imaginable,” says
Jeffrey L. Watson of Sewell Appliance. “And appliances have
evolved, much like everything else in the 2000s.”
There’s An App For ThatOne of the most signi cant developments in modern
household appliances involves connectivity.
“Technology, especially with the growing sophistication
of electronics, has led to much more user control and
friendliness,” notes Linda Hosea for Builder Specialties
(BSI). Angela Smith of LG Electronics agrees, stating, “One of the biggest trends today is the connected home. People are looking for user-friendly products that cut down on time and make chores around the house more ef cient. It’s not
just about having a high-tech gadget. It’s about adding value
to consumers’ lives and making their lives easier.”
The advent of smartphones and tablets has actually changed
the way homeowners interact with their appliances. WiFi
connectivity and the development of specialized apps
now allow people to provide information to and gather
information from their appliances. According to Jeffrey Payne
of Howard Payne Company, “Some of the newest innovations
include the ability of some ranges to connect to WiFi to allow
homeowners to access the oven controls remotely, receive
alerts when the oven hits certain temperatures and even
provide safety information, such as when an oven door is
being opened. Some will even text family members when the
meal is nished and dinner is ready!”
For example, Hosea points to the new dual convection wall
oven from Jenn-Air, which will be the brand’s rst with
wireless connectivity and a fully functioning application
for IOS and Android devices. Available in September, the
oven will give homeowners control of its functions from
their smartphones and tablets, as well as access to Jenn-
Air’s proprietary cooking innovations. “This new innovation

of products bene ts homeowners by giving them better
control of their product, a better outcome of foods and a
sense of pleasure when cooking,” observes Diane Coker of
Sub-Zero Group SE.
And that control extends beyond cooking itself.
LG Electronics now includes LG HomeChat on its refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers and cooking ranges, among other devices; the smartphone messenger app LINE connects to various
LG products and lets you have a conversation with your
appliances, giving you the power to control them remotely.
The company also has incorporated Smart DiagnosisTM
into its newest appliances; Smith notes that this feature
allows your appliance to communicate directly with
the company’s call center representatives or send
information via WiFi to a smartphone app for quick
diagnosis of a problem.

The vision of the Viking Buckhead Showroom is to be a destination for the appliance community in the Southeast; doing everything from conducting dealer trainings to assisting in the closing of sales. A resource center for architects, builders and designers to get the latest information, host industry events, and meet with clients. As well as an information center for customers to experience the latest the appliance industry has to offer.
On December 31, 2012, The Middleby Corporation, a global leader in the commercial foodservice equipment industry acquired Viking. The advantage to Viking is that Middleby owns over 50 commercial cooking equipment businesses that supply top quality products to the commercial foodservice industry. Their products are in 1 out of every 3 restaurants around the world and 97 out of the top 100 food service chains in the United States. Middleby has added an engineering “Shared Best Practice” process where several Engineers, from a variety of their commercial equipment divisions, work with Viking Engineers to adapt key commercial cooking technologies and innovation into Viking’s residential products.
The showroom will be open M-F from 9-5pm and by appointment on Saturday throughout the summer with a Grand Opening coming after Labor Day.

Daylight SavingsSaving time and saving energy are equally important to homeowners
today. That’s why many appliance manufacturers have developed products
that keep both in mind. “People spend so much time doing laundry,
especially when they have more than one child,” Smith says. “With our
TWIN WashTM System, you can do two loads at the same time.” Used with
the company’s front load models, the system includes a “mini washer”
that sits in a drawer underneath the main washer unit. Because it also is
used as a pedestal for the main washer, it saves space by maintaining the
machine’s original footprint. It is ideal for washing delicates or items that
require a unique setting, and it saves water because of the smaller drum
size (one cubic foot). A great companion for the TWIN WashTM System is LG’s EcoHybridTM Dryer, which uses 53 percent less energy, thanks to the country’s rst heat pump dryer. What’s more, the washer system and the dryer are both WiFi enabled
and can signal you when your loads of laundry are done, giving you the
freedom to get other chores done around the house without having to
stop to check the laundry. Smith remarks, “We are always geared toward
creating innovation that saves time and allows you to spend time on what
you really enjoy doing.”
Technology has also streamlined the cooking process. According to
Jennifer Hicks of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, today’s kitchen
appliances “allow more time for living and entertaining, even for the novice
chef. With the incorporation of smart technology, the cooking is practically
done for you.” One such advancement is the Jenn-Air Culinary Center, a
gourmet guide found within Jenn-Air’s single and double
wall ovens that “directs meal preparation for more than
50 food options, including desired doneness and even
the type of pan used,” Hicks continues.
Developed with the direction of food scientists,
professional chefs and home culinary artists, the
Culinary Center features touchscreen technology—the
same as used in smartphones—and a full-color LCD
display with an image-based cooking manual. Not sure what medium rare prime rib looks like? The Culinary Center will display a picture and guide you through the cooking process. If you want your fridge to be as high-tech as the rest
of your kitchen appliances, LG Electronics also offers
a Door-in-DoorTM option that includes a smaller
compartment for favorite foods. A ip of the magnetic
switch, and the smaller door opens to provide access
to those often accessed items, saving small amounts
of time that really add up. Better still, the smaller door
helps reduce the loss of cold air by 47 percent.
Organization is also key, says Andrew A. Maurer of
Whirlpool.

“The new KitchenAid 5 door fridge, the industry’s rst 5 door freestanding refrigerator, is a response
to our consumer’s need for precise organization. Two drawers
beneath the refrigerator compartment—one climate controlled
and the other dedicated for produce storage—create a variety
of storage options for fresh ingredients.”
Healthy ChoiceToday’s cutting-edge kitchen appliances also appeal to
homeowners who want to eat a healthier diet by offering a
coveted steam cooking option. “Steaming preserves many of
the vitamins, minerals, nutrients and micronutrients in
food that are typically lost through traditional cooking
methods,” Hicks explains. “And steaming allows for
avorful cooking without using butter or added fat.
Since the food only absorbs the amount of moisture
needed to cook, there is less chance of overcooking
or drying out.” She points to the Thermador Pro Grande® Steam range, which offers steam, convection and combination cooking all in one. Wolf also offers a steam option with its
24-inch E Series Transitional Convection
Steam Oven, according to Watson. The Wolf
Convection Steam Oven allows the customer
to cook anything with or without moisture:
artisan breads, the best tenderloin or brisket
you will ever eat, pastries and desserts. It
also reheats food.
Al Fresco ElectronicsWho says that indoor household appliances
are the only ones that can offer the best
innovation? These days, outdoor living has
become more coveted than ever, and the
tools available are just as advanced as their
interior counterparts.
“Outdoor living is almost year round in
Atlanta,” Hicks says. “And outdoor living
encompasses so much more than a grill.
Many people are including multiple types
of cooking elements: gas grills, infrared
rotisseries, ceramic smokers, pizza ovens
and single gas burners. People also include
food preservation, ice machines, Kegerators
and even clean up with outdoor dishwashers. Today, the outdoor
kitchen is just an extension of your home. The possibilities are
endless.”

Of course, the grill is often the centerpiece of the outdoor living experience.
Fortunately, bells and whistles are available in this arena as well. Hicks notes
the Lynx SmartGrill, which is voice activated or smart device controlled
and supports iOS and Android operating systems. She explains, “The SmartGrill takes the guesswork out of grilling. Food is practically grilled for you with the MyChefTM operating system, built-in speech recognition technology, automatic
ignition and heating, mobile noti cations and emergency shutoff
when instructions are not received for 30 minutes.”
Do Your HomeworkReplacing major household appliances is an investment, so it’s
important to educate yourself not only about the features offered, but
also what it will cost to own such state-of-the-art products. Depending
on the appliance (or appliances) you have in mind, the price tag could
reach several thousand dollars. And the costs will skyrocket if you plan
to replace several appliances at the same time. “Pricing for such items
will begin around $4,000 and go as high as $12,000,” Watson notes. “And
when someone is looking at spending upwards of $50,000 or more on
appliances, they need to know what they are getting.”
The experts suggest consulting with highly trained and
experienced appliance dealers to make sure that
you get the right information before you make a
purchase. They also recommend keeping a few
important points in mind. “Performance is a key
component in innovation,” Coker asserts. “Often,
folks think the bells and whistles are the way to
go, but in actuality, they often don’t work in the
perspective that it was presented to them. It’s all
about performance, performance, performance.”
“Appliance purchases are an investment in
productivity,” Hicks concludes. “Don’t simply replace
an appliance. Select an option that is smarter, faster
and stylish enough to last for years to come.”
Top It OffTechnology isn’t exclusive to major built-in household
appliances. Wolf recently released a new line of countertop appliances called Wolf Gourmet. A countertop convection oven with an integrated temperature probe headlines
the group of appliances, which also includes a state-of-the-art blender with pre-programmed
settings and a four-slice toaster with advanced toasting technology, among other devices. The
appliances range from $500 to $1,000. “For the luxury consumer, this is a fabulous add on. And
for the consumer who would like to be a luxury consumer, here is their opportunity to own
the best of the best at a price they can afford,” says Diane Coker of Sub-Zero Group SE.

Adding an outdoor living space can
enrich your lifestyle—and add value
to your home! In fact, a University of
Michigan study found that consumers
value a landscaped home 11.3 percent
higher than the same home without
good landscaping.
We’re lucky to live in the great Georgia
outdoors, which means we can extend
our living space to the backyard
and spend a lot of time with our
families outside. Protable outdoor
improvements can include everything
from landscaping and gardening to
adding elements like a pergola, patio
or deck, an outdoor kitchen, built-in
grill, replace or repit. Just about
anything your family will enjoy can
add tremendous value to your home.
The Basics: Adding a patio or deck
can be more of a multi-day/weekend
project. These projects are fairly
involved and take some planning
for size and space layout and
consideration, but yield a wonderful
living addition in which your family
can enjoy morning coffee, evening
meals or a quick afternoon nap in the comfort of your new
outdoor designed space.
Cooking Under the Stars: Turn up the heat! Some of today’s
most popular additions are those of the outdoor repit or
outdoor kitchen and grill. Think you can’t afford it? Think
how much money you’ll save by not eating out as much and
instead spending more quality time together in your own
backyard oasis!
Keep it simple with a purchased repit and entertain by
arranging chairs around to toast the glory of the summer
season. Or, go the distance by incorporating a well-designed
outdoor kitchen with grill and prep area.
Pretty Green Spaces: Think beyond “construction.” If you
have a green thumb or the desire to celebrate Earth Day
every day, go ahead! Plant, plant, plant! Planting shrubs, trees
and even colorful blooming owers adds as much for the
resale value as it does for the senses. Value-adding gardening
projects can run the gamut from planting the inexpensive
annuals at your local garden center all the way to hiring
a garden architect to draw up plans for a more elaborate,
complete vision.
Whichever size, type or scale of project you decide, you’ll be
happy you added it when it comes time to sell. Aside from a
sound real estate investment, making memories in your new
outdoor space provides another way for today’s busy family
to stay connected.

diybloggersbeatCreate Unique Pillows from Thrift Shop Clothing
1 Lay the garment out to measure how
many pillows you can make.
2 Cut the dress down each side seam
and across the shoulder seams to
create two separate pieces.
3 If there are any beaded and
jeweled areas on your garment
like the hem and neckline
on this dress, cut them off and set
them aside.
4 Measure approximately
14” x 17” starting at the top
of the garment (for a 12” x 16”
pillow), allow 1” hem at the bottom, 1”
seam and 1” on either side. (Ensure the
large piece of fabric has a consistent width
and length. If it doesn’t, trim it so you can
create more uniform pillows.)
5 Lay the neckline and hemline
pieces out on the top piece of
fabric and make a pattern that
echoes the dress design.
6 To sew the pillow: Iron a 1”
hem or use a fusible hem tape
onto the front and back piece
of fabric. Pin the fabric together
with like sides facing. Sew three
sides and part of the fouth side,
leaving an opening large enough
to t the pillow form. Insert the pillow
form and hand-whipstitch the opening.
7 Lay your pillow down with the front of
the pillow facing you. Take the hem and
neckline and arrange them on the pillow.
Hot glue the fabric to secure it in place then let
dry. You’re done!

7 Simple Steps
This is one of those “why didn’t I think of this before” kind of projects. Simple but genius! In this month’s blogger
beat, Atlanta blogger Melanie Robinson (of ThePaintedChandelierBlog.com fame) shows us how to repurpose thrift
shop clothing to create stunning, unique throw pillows. In the example shown here she uses an intricate dress, but
you can use any kind of garment you like.
