1Opinion Paragraph Rubric
8 5 3
The writer’s opin-
ion is clearly
stated in the topic
sentence. It is
clear that the
writer will suggest
to either
do something or
not do something.
It is somewhat un-
clear what the
writer’s position is
concerning the is-
sue. It is unclear
what the writer
wants the reader to
do or not to do.
There are serious
flaws with the topic
sentence. There
may be multiple
topics or a confus-
ing or completely
uninteresting con-
trolling idea.

Each supporting sentence relates to the main idea of what the writer in-tends to prove, i.e. clearly give well founded reasons and examples for why a certain action should either be taken or not be taken. None of the sentences in-troduces a new topic. The support-ing sentences are plentiful, clear, spe-cific, and concise.
There may be someuncertainty as to the relevance of some in-formation given. The reader may be left with some lingering question(s) about what it is that the writer wants to have happen or not hap-pen. There may be too few or too many sentences. Some might not be clear or specific.
The sentences in the paragraph may be completely unrelated to the main idea of the paragraph. A va-riety of sentences are off-topic, or com-pletely irrelevant. The writer might have written an essay.

The concluding
sentence clearly
ends the para-
graph with the
writer’s final
thoughts.
The concluding sen-
tence is the last
sentence in the
paragraph, but the
reader is left won-
dering if the writer
might have had
more to say.
The concluding sen-
tence has serious
errors or flaws. The
writer might intro-
duce a new topic in
the concluding sen-
tence.

There are a variety of simple, com-pound, and com-plex sentences. There are few, if any, errors related to spelling, verb tense, or punctua-tion. The vocabulary used is rich and interest-ing.
The writer tends to rely heavily on one or two types of ei-ther simple, com-pound, or complex sentences. There is a variety of small er-rors related to spell-ing, verb tense, or Punctuation (includ-ing with c.d. and c.x.). The vocabu-lary used could be better.
The writer either uses only one type of sentence, most likely simple, or when trying to use compound or com-plex sentences has numerous errors. There are numerous errors related to spelling, verb tense, or punctuation. The vocabulary used is either uninteresting or used erroneously.

The paragraph follows proper paragraph form, including a properly formatted title, properly used citations, foot-notes, etc... The title and/or subtitles are catchy and interesting. Any pic-tures, graphs, charts, etc... are relevant and contributes overall to the visual quality of the paragraph and the message it is trying to convey. There is at least one reference to an out-side source (not an im-age) which is cited properly in a footnote.
There may be issues re-garding the format of the paragraph regarding: title, citations, footnotes, etc... The title could be better. Some of the visual ele-ments might either be un-interesting or unrelated to the overall message of the paragraph. The writer might try adding too many visual elements in an effort to tell the story visually instead of through writing. There is at least one reference to an outside source (not an image) which is cited, but not properly, in a foot-note.
There are serious flaws in the format of the para-graph. For example, the title might not be cen-tered, or capitalized properly. There is no title. There are serious flaws with visual elements, such as being unrelated to the text of the paragraph or inap-propriate. There are more visual elements than writ-ing. There are no refer-ences to an outside source (other than per-haps an image). If there is an outside source, it is either not cited, or not cited properly.
