NewsHearing difficulties - views soughtHealthwatch Isle of Wight seeks views from residents with hearing difficulties A new survey has been launched to explore how well residents who are deaf or hard of hearing are able to communicate with those providing health and care services on the Isle of Wight.

The survey, which is understood to be the first of its kind on the Island, has been commissioned by Healthwatch Isle of Wight following feedback from residents who identified the issue of communications as one they would like to see reviewed by the local health and social care watchdog. The survey aims to help those with hearing difficulties to have their say in shaping and improving health and care services on the Island.

The survey will run until 27 June 2014 and is also available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LFBCCV5 with paper copies available on request from Age UK IW at 147 High Street, Newport or Healthwatch offices at The Riverside Centre, Newport. The findings of the survey and a full report and recommendations will then be made to the relevant agencies by the end of September.

Heatwave PlanThe Heatwave Plan for England is a plan intended to protect the population from heat-related harm to health. It aims to prepare for, alert people to, and prevent, the major avoidable effects on health during periods of severe heat in England. It recommends a series of steps to reduce the risks to health from prolonged exposure to severe heat for:

• The NHS, local authorities, social care, and other public agencies

• Professionals working with people at risk

• Individuals, local communities and voluntary groups

The plan is underpinned by a system of heatwave alerts, developed with the Met Office. The Heatwave Plan describes the Heat-Health Watch system which operates in England from 1 June to 15 September each year.

A link to the plan is here

Information on hot weather alerts can be found here

Groups can subscribe to the Met Office alert service here

FundingNear NeighboursThe Near Neighbours programme offers small grants between £250 and £5,000, providing seed capital for local groups and organisations who are working to bring together neighbours, to develop relationships across diverse faiths and ethnicities in order to improve their communities. This is a rolling programme with no deadlines but our second phase is due to run until March 2016 and we expect the grants programme to close near to this date. We will invest in a broad range of work including environmental, social, cultural, artistic and sporting ideas but they need to fulfil the following criteria.

• Creating Association

• Local and Sustainable

• Transformative

We are keen to give grants that positively impact and transform the neighbourhoods in which projects run. This could be done through something as simple as litter picking or as developed as reducing community tensions. Regardless of what the particular activity is we want to see it transform the local neighbourhood for good.

Together in ServiceIs a new programme supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government. Its objectives are:• to celebrate the practical contribution that faith communities make to society through social action

• to support faith groups in undertaking new multi-faith volunteering projects at local level

• Social action can broadly be defined as practical action in the service of others,

FaithAction will be administering a pot of £160,000 over 2 years. This is available as 1:1 match-funding for small grants of £2,000 and £5,000 – the Together in Service Fund – to facilitate new multi-faith social action projects at a local level, where there is often a lack of confidence in undertaking volunteering work in a multi-faith way.

If you are looking to apply for a £5,000 grant, please note that these are extremely limited, and we will expect you to demonstrate how your project will have a wider impact than those who are awarded £2,000. Grants will be given to constituted bodies, not to individuals. Grants are only available in England.

The Henry Smith CharityHoliday Grants for Children. The purpose of this scheme is to provide children with a recreational holiday or outing they would not otherwise have the opportunity to access. This means that we will not fund trips where the primary purpose is education. You must make a clear case for the financial need of the individuals attending as well as the organisation applying. Grants of between £500 and £2,500 can be considered. We will only fund a maximum of two-thirds of the total cost of a holiday as we expect some of the funding to be raised elsewhere but please be aware that, even if we are able to make a grant to your organisation, we may not be able to award you the full amount you ask for.
