(c) A STEP file is a type of file that can be used and opened in any 3D CAD package. This means that CAD libraries can be used by any software package.

(d) They mean that frequently used parts do not need to be redrawn each time they are required.

(e) The ability to manufacture an object straight from a drawing/CAD model.

(g) i) i) Tolerances are applied to parts of a drawing in order to ensure their accuracy. Some parts of a drawing are vital for the assembly of a product.

This must be written following British Standards on the drawing.

Q2 (a) Design Elements Mass/weight The image on the left creates increased weight for the left hand side of the advertisement. This layout helps the text stand out as well as the smaller images of the different coloured headphones. Shape The idea of the circular shape of the beats logo is repeated throughout the advertisement. Size The image of the man wearing the headphones is the largest item on the page which creates impact. The title and logo is the largest item on the right to make it stand out. Colour

The text “Colour” uses colours which match the order of the colours of the headphones on the advertisement. The background is a neutral colour to allow these headphones and the colours of them stand out. By not using a white background it allows the headphones to appear less harsh against it. Design Principles Balance The large image on the left hand side of the advertisement is balanced by the light colours, white space and text on the right hand side of the page. The many smaller elements of the right hand side of the advertisement balance this larger image. Contrast The contrasting colours used create visual impact throughout the advertisement. This allows the images of the coloured products to stand out against the neutral background. The colours used for the logo and ttile stand out against the background. Alignment The title, product logo and subheading are centre aligned with each other. The bottom of the text “limited edition” is aligned with the bottom of the image of the different coloured headphones. Proportion The grid structure of the advertisement clearly splits the landscape sheet into 2 areas. The image of the product being worn is on the left, while the other parts of the layout are on the right. The image of the range of coloured headphones has had a drop shadow applied to make it appear to come forward from the advert.

1 mark will be awarded for each correct design element or principle mentioned. Further marks should be awarded where these design elements or principles have their impact on the advertisement correctly described. The effect of the design element or design principle should be described fully. More than one description for a single design element or design principle can have marks awarded.

Rhythm The viewer is attracted first to the large image on the left of the advertisement. The man in the image looking to the right helps with this as it appears that he is looking toward the details of the advertisement. The repetition of the use of circular shapes brings the advertisement together. White Space The area to the right of the advertisement has been left clear to create breathing space for the reader. This is to contrast with the image on the left. Proximity/unity

The title, product logo and subheading are close to each other to make it clear they should be read together. The text “Colour Limited Edition” is placed close to the images of the different coloured headphones to make it obvious they belong together.

(b) Register mark Used to show if the CMYK colour scheme has been set up/lined up correctly. Used to show the images will not be distorted.

1 mark for stating the name. 1 mark for explaining what it does.

(c) Advantages of using a Vector file over a raster file

Can be resized without a lack of sharpness

Clear and precise graphics can be produced.

More suited for high quality print material, especially large print projects.

(b) i) Preliminary sketches ii) These are initial sketches which give the client an idea of what the graphic proposal will look

like. Preliminary drawings can be produced using either manual or digital techniques. They will

also be used to inform the development of the CAD drawings.

(c) i) Promotional drawings ii) These are computer produced, fully rendered images which will advertise the product. These

often show the product in context for consumers and will contain some advertising material.

Q4 (a) Sketch a profile of a square 100mm x 100mm. 1 mark Create 3 workplanes offset from each other by 50mm, 75mm then 50mm. 1 mark On each of these workplanes sketch profiles of 150mm x 40mm, then 150mm x 40mm, then 100mm x 70mm.
