Bulletin / 14 th June 2019 Exam Success! Today was one of the most enjoyable days of the academic year as I congratulated our Year 8 pupils upon their Common Entrance performance and gave out their individual results. All pupils had performed well and were clearly thrilled with their grades, which are a testimony to hard work and excellent teaching. Meanwhile, the internal school examination results have been pleasing overall and I hope that the children can now turn their attention to a range of exciting end of year events and activities over the coming weeks including the Year 8 trip to Pembrokeshire, the Year 6 Gordonstoun Challenge, Belartis Week, the Beginners Concert and much more. I hope that you enjoy this Bulletin and that Year 8 parents enjoy celebrating with their children! Helen Skrine Headmistress

Awesome Book Awards

Maths

Year 4 enjoyed solving puzzles during the Maths Challenge afternoon at St. George’s Junior

School recently.

Before half term, twelve lucky members from Years 5 and 6 were invited to join hundreds of young readers from across the South East, who gathered together for a celebration of children’s fiction at the Awesome Book Awards 2019 prize-giving. For some weeks, our children had been busy, ferociously reading, reviewing and voting a range of new fiction. The children loved the exciting evening.

Year 2 News

Year 2 enjoyed a strawberry 🍓 party this week to celebrate the successful growth of their own strawberry plants at school. The offer of some squirty cream was taken up by many of the pupils!

Year 2 also had fun with a problem solving challenge this week in History, to construct their own version of the Fire of London Monument. They had to build a 3D column with firm foundations, stability and height above one metre. Did any group manage all three? See for yourself!

Abinger Medieval Fair

The Trail Academy

Page 6

Thank you to everyone who helped out at the Abinger Fair on Saturday and to those who donated items for the magnificent Belmont hamper, one of the main raffle prizes. The Fair made over £16,000, despite the weather being a little unseasonal for the time of year!

From September 2019, the Trail Academy will be offering two after-school clubs at Belmont using the newly built mountain bike trail. There will be a club for the Juniors on a Monday and Seniors on a Thursday, split into groups based on ability. So, whether you are just starting out or already tearing up the trails, there will be club to suit you! With 25-years’ experience in the cycling industry, the qualified Trail Academy coaches have a professional yet fun approach to all things mountain bike! With on-site, one-to-one tuition, riders will work on core skills, refine their bike set up, conquer their fears and above all, have fun! Sessions are priced at £15 each. Please contact [email protected] to reserve your child’s place.

Design Technology

Pupils in Year 5 have enjoyed designing and making slippers as their DT project. They have looked at what it means to be a designer and have considered factors such as comfort, safety, appearance and durability. They produced different designs and chose one to make. They drew around their feet, cut out patterns and material and sewed them together. I think you will agree that the end results were first class!

The IAPS National Swimming finals took place last weekend with children competing from all over Britain and there was even a Prep School from Kenya!
