4 WAY TEST

For Rotary, The Four-Way Test is the cornerstone of all action. It has been for years, and it will be in the future. Of the things we think, say or do

As Rotarians, we should have The Four-Way Test in mind in every decision we make, all day long. Our utmost responsi-bility is to Speak The Truth, to Be Fair, to Build Goodwill and Better Friendships, and to do our very best in all situations.

4 Way Test was developed in 1932 by

Herbert J. Taylor.

---- 1 ---- Is it the TRUTH?

---- 2 ----Is it FAIR to all concerned?

---- 3 ----

Will it build GOODWILL and

better FRIENDSHIPS?

---- 4 ----Will it be BENEFICIAL

to all concerned?

Greeted by the always-smiling Doug Clark and Rick Binder.

Impressed by all the Rotary business unfolding in the buzzing foy-

er: Linda Stouffer and Jim Davies bustling over beer and

vendors for our June 28 Kids, Kegs and Crafts fundraiser; happy

engaged chatter by dozens of teeming throngs of swarming-coffee

drinking-do-gooding Rotarians; Louise Andres smiling and Dis-

trict-Governing magnanimously over us all. And our meeting hadn’t

even begun yet. Just another dynamic Friday in LJGT Rotaryland.

Somewhat unusual opening: President Brett did TWO dings

because the first one was a dud. He turned down the music, and

ROTD Roger Drexler blessed us the Irish way: “May the road

rise up to meet you…” Roger’s comments were thematic - educa-

tion, work, Rotary. Nursery school through UCLA grad school, M.A.

in hospital administration, plenty of time in the military, 25 years

with Sharp (favorite sojourn at the Rehab Center), 4 years teaching

healthcare management, interesting venture in business cleaning

ducks. Or maybe it was ducts. Fabulous metaphor of Rotary as a

jewel in his life, facets on a beautiful ornament, the gifts and joy of

service above self. Visual effects enhanced by Dentist Dennis.

“…may the wind be always at your back…”

Fabulous beast, the Tecate frog, successor to the burro and the

pig, graciously presented by Tom Elliott, the butt of many corny

hopping and croaking jokes. The frog. Not Tom.

“…may the sun shine warm upon your face…”

Guests: Louis Scotti’s frequent breakfast compadre Tim Bar-

zal; the incomparable, inimitable Susan Brown, Barbro’s

sister from Chapel Hill; Nancy Brown (Stu’s widow); David

Chong’s father Al.

High 5’s way out of control: Linda Laara Jackson Gervais

did a Happy 4 (???) for Joe Howell for something. (See what I

mean?) Dianne Day had a hole-in-one. As in golf. Pete told

us Dory has already started an international service project with

the Rotary at their second home in the Bay Area. (No surprise

there. She’s AMAZING!) Sandi Rimer’s son got promoted to

co-manager at the Hermes flagship store in Beverly Hills. Richard

Tilles’ daughter is an honors graduate student in physics. Irwin

Rubenstein’s son has a new job in D.C. with PBS. Mike Bar-

din’s oldest granddaughter has a drivers’ license. Tony Grillo

said something wonderful about helping the “climbing team(?)” but

you couldn’t hear because there was so much ruckus still going on

about Mike’s granddaughter.

“…and the rain fall soft upon your fields…”

Susan Schwarz h o n o r e d t h r e e Pa u l H a r r i s Fe l l o w s :

Dave Dav is , T im Barza l , and Lou is Scot t i .

Poignant moment when Brett presented Nancy Brown with a

special memento honoring her LJGTR charter member husband

Stu in a melding of law enforcement support, dear friend Frank

McGrath, and Rotary. Kevin Carlson spearheaded the proj-

ect at the Family Justice Center that honored Stu with an excess

of $50,000 equivalent worth of goods and services. Rick Clark

is preparing one of his highly memorable videos of the project. He

will debut his film the morning that SD Police Chief Shelley

Zimmerman is our guest speaker.

Community service meeting today. Linda Stouffer urged all to

register and to recommend potential vendors for our June 28 Art

and Craft Beer Festival. First male model: Brett in the cool black

Kids Kegs and Crafts t-shirts.

Second male model: David Tansey in his car mechanic suit

providing segue into Road Rally 2014. Emidio recounted it all

with breathtaking drama about screeching tires, HOA fines, drifting

around corners, gold-plated dipsticks and the Tanseys relation-

ship challenge when Kathleen said turn left, Dave Davis and

the golden sneaker (get it? “runner” up?), Joel and Chris “win-

ning” because they’re new and they didn’t know any better.

Ellen Bryson still needs bunnies next Friday (DID ANYONE

MENTION WE MEET AT THE SHERATON THAT DAY?) for her Door

of Hope gift baskets.

Bev Fritschner (Go ZLAC and thank you and Jacquie Reil-

ly AGAIN for the beautiful new directories) introduced her friend

and neighbor Joanne Pastula, President and CEO of Junior

Achievement of San Diego and Imperial Counties. She educated us

about the goals and accomplishments of Junior Achievement work-

ing with tens of thousands of young people in 250 schools over

the years. She focused on BizTown and Finance Park teaching fi-

nancial literacy through experiential learning. BizTown is currently

functioning and Finance Park is projected for completion in 2015. In

JABizTown, 5th graders experience the adult roles that actually run

a city. JAFinance Park is a game of life for high schoolers where the

focus is on personal budgeting simulations preparing to be consum-

ers, investors, and workers. They learn about everything from FICO

scores to philanthropy. Students have weekly lessons for five weeks

in preparation for their one-day field trip experience to JABizTown.

Rick Clark said grandparents can verify their age by checking

their underwear label and that making babies is easy. Just change

the “-y” to “-ies.”

“…and until we meet again (AT THE SHERATON) may God

hold you in the hollow of His hand.”
