EXHIBIT F:   RECREATIONAL PURPOSES AND ASPECTS 

State the extent,  if any, the proposed site or route will be available to the public for recreational  purposes,  consistent  with  safety  considerations  and  regulations  and attach  any  plans  the  applicant  may  have  concerning  the  development  of  the recreational aspects of the proposed site or route. 

 

The alternative routes would be located within public road right‐of‐way to the extent practical and will be available to the public consistent with existing use.   Alternative B  is  located directly adjacent to soccer fields at Kino Sports Complex and would therefore be co‐located with this use.  

Various recreational activities occur close to the preferred and alternative routes. There are also several municipal parks near the alternative routes that offer sports and playground facilities (see Exhibit F‐1). Although these facilities are located in proximity to the alternative routes, the Project would not prevent current recreation uses at these facilities. 

Table 6 lists the recreational facilities adjacent to the alternative routes.  Other neighborhood parks and recreation centers are located 1500 feet or more from the alternatives.

The Julian Wash Greenway is part of The Loop, a shared‐use trail complex throughout Pima County and City of Tucson, that has both soft and hard surface trails. Pima County is developing “The Loop” around metropolitan Tucson with  links  to Marana, Oro Valley, and South Tucson. Pima County  residents and visitors on foot, bikes, skates, and horses can enjoy the more than 120 miles of shared‐use paths that have already been completed.  

Kino Sports Complex (south of Ajo Way, and including Veterans Memorial Stadium) covers 155 acres, and is the largest professional sports and entertainment venue of its kind in Pima County. If offers recreational arenas for youth, high school, collegiate, semi‐pro, and professional grass sports and provides a setting for social gatherings, concerts, and community events. 

Kino Sports Complex (north of Ajo Way)  is primarily dedicated to soccer and  long field activities with a lighted 2,000‐seat North Grandstand field, four soccer fields, and a 3,000‐seat stadium (North Stadium). 

The Kino Environmental Restoration Project was created from a 50‐acre detention basin.  It covers 141 acres, and contains 28 acres of riparian and open water including a 5.6 acre, fifty‐foot deep pond; 21 acres of grassland, mesquite bosque, marsh and upland vegetation that rises to an elevation of 2,520 feet; and another 92 acres that includes flood control structures, a basin earthen berm, and a recreational path that surrounds the basin.   Recreational opportunities  include bird‐watching, wildlife viewing, and a 2.2 mile paved trail for walking, running, and bicycling. 

Visitors  to  these  recreational  facilities would experience  an  impact  from  the  added  structures  in  the viewshed (see visual simulations in Exhibit G‐5).  The existing structures within view of the recreational facilities  include  the  railroad,  I‐10,  the  Sundt  Generating  Station,  various  commercial  and  industrial facilities, and multiple power distribution and transmission  lines, therefore the  impact of the Project’s additional structures is indirect and negligible. 

The proposed Project would not directly impact the facilities or any of the current recreation uses.
