Project Overview and Goals • Project Overview – UNC will significantly expand its capabili3es in Coastal Resilience by developing a
graduate cer3ficate program in Natural Hazards Resilience and by hiring a tenure track faculty member (trained in physical science and/or engineering) in the area of Coastal Hazards and Climate Science.

• Educate the next genera3on of natural hazards scholars and prac33oners • Provide students with the knowledge and experience needed to ac3vely contribute to the study and/
or the prac3ce of natural hazards resilience • Coalesce the world class UNC-CH faculty • Develop an “esprit de corps” among students

• Disaster losses con3nue to rise at an exponen3al rate in the United States and across
the world. • Alignment with Quadrennial Homeland Security Report Goal 1.3 (manage risks to
cri3cal infrastructure), Mission 5 (ensuring resilience to disasters) and associated goals (mi3gate hazards, enhance preparedness, ensure effec3ve emergency response, and rapid recovery).
• The cer3ficate program will build capacity by a^rac3ng and training the next genera3on of natural hazards scholars and prac33oners.
