Melbourne Recital Centre lights up over autumn as the world’s best musicians play at Australia’s home for great music. The diversity and depth of the Centre’s program encompasses rock and jazz legends, cello virtuosos and opera. Discover a moving and unconventional theatrical experience in Taking the Waters, by singer-songwriter Suzannah Espie with Lemony S Puppet Theatre (1-4 April). Live voice and puppetry meet in a breathtaking meditation on life and death in the intimacy of the Primrose Potter Salon.

We welcome back Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Metropolis as one of the new music events of the year when pioneering trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger and the Orchestra take over the Centre for a one-night journey into sound (8 April). Hardenberger performs and leads music to provoke and beguile by composers as diverse as Franco-American Besty Jolas, Australians Brett Dean and Lisa Illean, and Joni Mitchell.

The pick of Bluesfest takes to the Elisabeth Murdoch stage in April. Folk force-of-nature Buffy Sainte-Marie brings her powerful songs (9 April), extraordinary Malian musicians Amadou and Mariam are an unforgettable explosion of Afro-pop energy in concert (14 April), and the War and Treaty are a soulful Americana powerhouse (15 April). In addition to these electrifying acts, Australian rock royalty Augie March makes a victory lap to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its debut Sunset Studies, revisiting the hit album in full (15 May). The meeting of iconic musicians Paul Grabowsky and Paul Kelly reveal fresh takes on Kelly’s catalogue (26 May).

Melbourne Recital Centre is delighted to present some of the finest ensembles in the world. The astonishing French ensemble Van Kuijk Quartet is one of the most exciting string quartets around, renowned for stylish, joyous performances (11 May). Period orchestra Les Arts Florissants and the young singers of Le Jardin des Voix left Melbourne audiences moved and elated in 2015. They return with Mozart’s youthful operatic masterpiece, La finta giardiniera (The Pretend Garden-maid). It’s an evening of comedy and magic (13 May). Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin has earned international acclaim for his powerful playing, he performs heroic works by Schubert, Paganini and more with pianist Albert Tiu (16 June).

What can you tell us about the characters and synopsis of Taking the Waters?

Sarah Kriegler (SK): Taking the Waters follows the story of three sisters; Chook, Maggie and Duck. Duck, the youngest is dying. The two older sisters have returned after many years apart, to care for their dying sister. What happens in the world of the sisters is probably very recognisable to anyone who has a slightly fraught relationship with family (and is there anyone who doesn’t?!).

Sarah Kriegler is an award-winning director, puppeteer, writer, and the co-director of Lemony S Puppet Theatre. Her magical new work Taking the Waters has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike since its premiere in November last year. We caught up with Sarah to discover more about the story and inspiration behind the show, ahead of its Centre debut this April.

The three sisters fall back into long-ago established patterns of behaviour which does none of them justice – Chook, the oldest sister, becomes the fussy chook, bustling around looking after everyone, never resting, never taking care of herself; Maggie, the middle sister, becomes a slovenly adolescent, strumming on the guitar and singing, getting in the way; and Duck, even as she lays in her sick bed, slots back into the role of the peacemaker. But slowly, as life slips away, things have to change, new patterns have to be established and a new way of being together has to be found.

Taking the Waters combines music, puppets, visual art and theatre. Was it always your intention to fuse these elements into the work, and what inspired this?

SK: We have been making puppet works for adults and family audiences for almost 15 years. Sometimes it feels a little simplified to call them ‘puppet works’ as they always include live performance, music, song, objects and some puppetry. It was always our intention to fuse these wonderfully diverse elements together. Our starting place is always with a puppet of some kind, in this case, it was with an almost life-sized human body, which inspired the character of Duck.

Puppetry, as an image-based artform, works best when accompanied by equally strong, resonant music. All of our previous works thus far have had strong collaborations with musicians and composers. Taking the Waters investigates this further and was the first time we worked with live sung voice. Suzannah Espie’s soulful, resonant voice has been the perfect accompaniment to this work. Her voice cracks you open the same way the puppetry does, and the effect is visceral.

When we began this work, we knew we wanted a shadow puppetry element to it. Shadow puppetry is a fabulous way of portraying a complex story simply. In 2017, we had the good fortune of meeting Kyoko Imazu and seeing her paper cut work. We fell in love with Kyoko’s work instantly, and asked her to collaborate with us on Taking the Waters. It’s been a match made in heaven as Kyoko’s sensibilities and responses to the stimuli, the story and my friend Suzannah’s voice, were spot on.

Australian singer-songwriter Suzannah Espie and Lemony S. Puppet Theatre explore family love, loss and drama in their critically acclaimed show about the absurdity of life and death.

Three sisters are reunited when Duck, the youngest, learns she is dying, and her older sisters, Maggie and Chook, return to care for her. Old patterns of behaviour play out, old wounds are re-opened and, ultimately, a new reality where three must become two has to be found.

At the heart of Taking the Waters’s poignant emotional journey is its beautiful musical score. Espie – lauded by The Age for ‘giving voice to unspoken emotion, breaking into songs of lament with mournful clarity’ – expresses through her original songs all that the sisters can’t.

Framed as a ‘requiem for the carer’, Taking the Waters delicately weaves together intricate shadow puppetry, live sung voice, bunraku puppets (small human figures) and acting, in a work of breathtaking power.

Scotland’s TenducciA revered castrato, Giusto Tenducci was the equivalent of an 18th-century rock star. This concert of rarely performed Baroque music showcases works by several Italians, including Tenducci himself, who composed in Edinburgh during the 18th century, in addition to Scottish arrangements of J.S. Join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) at the new-look Metropolis, an innovative one-night-only event headlined by Swedish trumpet virtuoso and new music pioneer Håkan Hardenberger.

All corners of Melbourne Recital Centre come alive in a journey of sound. In this artist-led musical discovery exploring the relationship between creator and performer, Metropolis’s artistic director Hardenberger leads the MSO both playing and conducting a four-part program: Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Epilogue. The long-standing career and distinctive work of Franco-American composer Betsy Jolas forms the focus of the evening. Described as ‘a folk-music mother of dragons’ (NPR), veteran American-Canadian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie’s boundary breaking career is the stuff of legend.

In 1964, she released her seminal debut It’s My Way! launching her identity as a trailblazing artist and disruptor of the status quo. In 1969, she made one of the world’s first electronic vocal albums. In 1982, she became the only Indigenous person to win an Oscar. She’s been blacklisted and silenced. She’s written pop standards sung by the likes of Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley and Donovan. Her song ‘Universal Soldier’ has been hailed as the definitive anti-war anthem of the 20th century.

In our climate of damaging #fakenews and toxic hubris, Buffy Sainte-Marie’s incisive honesty, clarity and intelligent compassion stand out in sharp relief. Her latest works are about the environment, alternative conflict resolution, Indigenous realities, greed and racketeering.

Sainte-Marie doesn’t sugar-coat the truth, nor does she shy away from hard realities, but her music is never overwhelming or oppressive. Part rhythmic healing, part trumpeting wakeup call, Buffy Sainte-Marie’s songs are a soundtrack for the resistance.

Amadou & MariamFor decades Amadou & Mariam has been celebrated as one of the most famous ambassadors for Malian and African music around the world – a golden status that the band carries with brio and playfully challenges with each new album.

Amadou & Mariam has collaborated with everyone from Damon Albarn of Blur to Manu Chao. Featured on the duo’s youthful and lively songs are a diversity of innovative and emerging pop artists from Santigold to TV On The Radio and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Remixes by Yuksek, Henrik Schwarz, Miike Snow and Ashley Beedle are further proof of the band’s acclaim, underlining the intrinsically danceable quality of its songs. Amadou & Mariam has played the world’s biggest festivals, from Coachella to Glastonbury, and opened for bands such as Coldplay and the Scissor Sisters. Husband and wife powerhouse duo The War and Treaty make music for the soul.

Heading to Melbourne off the back of their break-out release Healing Tide, The War and Treaty (aka Michael and Tanya Trotter) serve up healing, pain-robbing songs with freewheeling joy. Funky bass lines, keys, lap steel, acoustic strings, and stripped-down percussion create a swampy Southern soul bed for the couple’s transcendent vocals. A tour-de-force produced by Buddy Miller, the collection swaggers with confidence only gained by artists who are wholly, proudly, themselves.

Michael is a wounded warrior who found his voice while serving in Iraq, when he was given an opportunity to write songs for the fallen. Tanya is a lifelong artist, drawn to singing’s power to take another’s pain away.

‘You have to have a deep place of love within yourself to be vulnerable,’ Tanya says. ‘With The War and Treaty, we allow people to see two people that are not perfect. We get on stage. We sweat. We’re overweight. We yell. We get ugly, we scream! My hair comes loose. We’re vulnerable – naked – in front of people, and it’s a chain reaction. It allows you to be vulnerable, too.’

Mozart’s bright and achingly beautiful basset clarinet concerto performed on the rare and richly voiced instrument of the period.

Mozart enthusiastically embraced the clarinet and wrote the first major concerto for the then rarely utilised wind instrument. The Concerto in A for basset clarinet was the great composer’s final instrumental work which he completed less than two months before his early death at age 35. The yearning Adagio is familiar to many from its evocative use in many well-known film scores such as Out of Africa. Rarely though is the concerto performed in concert on basset clarinet, the instrument which Mozart chose in his enduring adaptation of an earlier composition for basset horn. Hear leading Australian period clarinetist Craig Hill deliver this beguiling work in a program also featuring Emma Black, who performs Mozart’s Concerto for oboe in C.

Tchaikovsky, Angel of MusicTchaikovsky wrote the great ‘Moscow’ Cantata in 1883 to mark the Coronation of Emperor Alexander III. Set to an epic poem by Apollon Maikov, the work contains some of the most grandiose music that Tchaikovsky ever wrote. Tchaikovsky, Angel of Music is a large, romantic opera by Australian composer Sean Peter Ross, which shines a light on Tchaikovsky’s life. Hailing from Paris, Van Kuijk Quartet is a young chamber ensemble whose ‘style, energy, and sense of risk’ (The Guardian, U.K.) has crafted its brilliant reputation internationally.

A celebrated performer of Mozart, the Quartet’s refined technique shines through his masterful String Quartet No.15. Composed at the height of Mozart’s creative power, its bittersweet mood puts it in delightful contrast to the joyful character typically associated with the composer. Bartók’s virtuosic String Quartet No.4 does not waste a note, demanding the type of laser-cut precision the Van Kuijk’s can deliver. Displaying touches of the great masters he cherished, Schumann’s quartet is an exuberant work marked by his Romantic yearnings. Schumann thought of the string quartet as a ‘conversation among four people,’ a sentiment that Van Kuijk Quartet’s originality and sophistication expresses in spades.

A pioneer in the renaissance of early music, Les Arts Florissants enchants audiences all over the globe with its exquisite productions of 17th- and 18th-century musical treasures. In partnership with the legendary Juilliard School of New York, the orchestra also empowers the next generation of musicians through its vocal academy, Le Jardin des Voix (The Garden of Voices).

Performances with Le Jardin des Voix have become a not-to-be-missed rendezvous for audiences to hear the best and brightest voices of tomorrow. For the ninth edition, and the 40th anniversary of Les Arts Florissants, the academy presents the new harvest of star singers in the full opera of La finta giardiniera (The Pretend Garden-maid), written by Mozart when he was just 18-years-old – even younger than the young singers themselves.

For a vocal ensemble called Le Jardin des Voix the choice of The Pretend Garden-maid is no coincidence. All the art of a young Mozart comes alive in a fantasy garden full of twists and turns. Released in 2000, Sunset Studies is the iconic debut album from Australian indie rock legend Augie March. After two EPs and several years’ gigging, the band had primed an audience for a debut that would earn respect as one of the most expansive, ambitious and literate Australian musical releases of all time.

Musically the album moves seamlessly from sophisticated to naive, from joyful to desolate, from intense guitar rock to stark ambient sound to traditional folk balladry, as the band members threw themselves into each unexpected occasion and unfamiliar role with the abandon that only comes with youth and the sense that they might never get another chance like this, but with nothing to lose all the same.

The album went gold.

It remains a favourite across the planet, and is regularly praised by prominent artists today as an enormous influence. Songs such as ‘Asleep In Perfection’, ‘There Is No Such Place’, ‘The Hole in Your Roof ’ and ‘Here Comes the Night’ have all become cult anthems. Since the release of Sunset Studies, Augie March has gone on to release five more acclaimed albums and garnered a reputation as one of Australia’s most unique and engaging live acts. MOSTLY MOZART

Diana Doherty & MozartDiana Doherty is widely regarded as one of the most talented Australian instrumentalists working today. Described as ‘oboe royalty’, Diana joins musicians of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of delightful woodwind masterpieces.

Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-flat is most likely modelled on Mozart’s written a dozen years earlier, but in contrast Beethoven casts the piano and winds in contrasting roles. Mozart’s Serenade for Winds in C minor is one of his most puzzling and mysterious works in its orchestration, key and form, while remaining a Mozart treasure to enjoy.

The Mostly Mozart series of concerts provides an hour of wonderful music and the chance to catch up with friends over a cup of tea with classical masterpieces performed in the acoustic beauty of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Brecker Plays Rovattifeat. The Joe Chindamo Trio

The chemistry between seven-time Grammy-winning jazz trumpeter and fusion pioneer Randy Brecker and composer-saxophonist Ada Rovatti is obvious – both on stage and in life. Brecker has helped shape the sound of jazz, R&B and rock for over 50 years and wife Rovatti has been his collaborator for many of the best of them. Rovatti even sat in for Brecker’s late saxophonist brother Michael when he became unwell, and later for the Brecker Brothers Band Reunion tour. On their 2018 release, Brecker Plays Rovatti: Sacred Bond, the pair explores a shared love of Brazilian music, soul and straight-ahead jazz in 10 tracks composed by Rovatti. For this exclusive Melbourne International Jazz Festival performance, they are joined by local virtuoso pianist Joe Chindamo and his trio featuring Brendan Clarke on bass and Danny Fischer on drums. Chindamo is routinely described as one of the best jazz pianists in the world and as a composer has earned wild acclaim for his concertos, chamber music and film soundtracks.

Avishai Cohen Trio50:50:50Internationally acclaimed bassist, vocalist and composer Avishai Cohen celebrates his 50th birthday. To mark this half-century milestone, Cohen is embarking on an ambitious global tour performing 50 gigs in 50 countries. Australia is among them, a first for the artist who has won a global fan base with his dynamic, thought provoking music that embraces everything from jazz, pop and classical to Israeli-Arab folk songs. This virtuoso double bassist left his native Israel in the late 1980s for New York City’s melting pot of sounds where he played all types of jazz, funk and fusion, eventually joining Chick Corea’s Origin band. Cohen has since forged one of the most influential sounds in contemporary jazz. His driving, bass-lead originals match complex timing, hard-hitting grooves and an agile voice that adds a powerful emotional dimension to his music. The 50:50:50 project resonates with the spirit of inclusion and solidarity that has defined Cohen’s music from the beginning. He’ll cross borders and break down barriers, creating a ‘global village’ of music in every performance.

The Orchestra will be conducted by America’s music maestro Terry Myers, critically acclaimed as America’s leading musical director and performer of the Benny Goodman music library. Melissa AldanaMelissa Aldana is something of a trail-blazer – she is both the first female musician and the first South American to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone competition.

With her New York-based quartet and Chilean animators, Aldana presents a stunning six-part multimedia suite which creates a musical and visual narrative about Frida Kahlo and her life. Visions for Frida Kahlo draws parallels between Aldana’s experience as a female saxophonist in a male-dominated community and Kahlo’s experience as a female artist struggling to assert herself in a landscape dominated by men. Eishan EnsembleLed by acclaimed Persian-Australian tar player and composer Hamed Sadeghi, Eishan Ensemble draws on contemporary and classical music traditions of both East and West. Sadeghi’s powerful original compositions feature with lashings of improvisation drawing from diverse musical styles. Described by Pitchfork as ‘one of the most innovative voices in British music’, Anna Meredith is a genre-crossing composer and producer whose work straddles the world of contemporary classical, art pop, electronica and experimental rock.

She brings her ‘stormy, ecstatic, endlessly danceable’ (NPR) live show to Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, performing her original contemporary works with her virtuosic five-piece band featuring guitar, tuba, cello, percussion and electronics for the first time this June.

After building an established career in the classical world and releasing two EPs on Moshi Moshi Records, she launched the hotly anticipated FIBS last year – her second album and the follow-up to her 2016 award-winning debut, Varmints. Between albums she’s opened the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festivals with Five Telegrams, scored Bo Burnham’s debut feature-length film Eighth Grade and Paul Rudd’s dark comedy series Living With Yourself for Netflix.

The cello’s rich, soulful voice is ideally suited to the emotive and expansive music of the Romantics.

The Shanghai-born, Australian-trained cellist Li-Wei Qin has made a brilliant career as a charismatic champion of their virtuoso repertoire. Schubert composed his A-minor Sonata for the now-obsolete arpeggione, so cellists have adopted it. In the exquisitely sombre slow movement you can hear tragic echoes of Winterreise. The headlong rush that opens Mendelssohn’s thrilling Sonata in D sets hearts racing, but the Adagio at the centre is a ‘Baroque’ aria of rapt lyricism. Pianist Albert Tiu is a bravura partner in these intricate chamber masterpieces. Cellists have also ‘borrowed’ Paganini’s flamboyant ‘Moses Fantasy’ to stunning effect. Li-Wei will astonish us as he spins out variations each more extravagant than the last.
