Build a School in Ecuador

Nov 14–22 $3,495 us + air Me To We

“ This unique trip was a great experience! We had the opportunity to talk to local community members and their children as they showed us their homes, schools and skills. I loved going to the schools, and especially talking to the students.” Diane Pawlowsky, BScPhm 1978, 1st trip

Learn first-hand about the joys and challenges of traditional life in Ecuador while you help build a local school. Along the journey, you’ll discover the wild beauty of the Amazon and meet the indigenous communities that call the rainforest home. You can recharge and reflect on the day’s adventures at the charming Minga Eco Lodge, with its stunning views of the Rio Napo—tributary to the Amazon River. This is base camp for your opportunity to make a difference in the community.

Minga Eco Lodge is the newest destination in the Me to We Volunteer Adventure family. It offers an incredibly unique perspective on the traditional culture of the Amazonian people and their ecological environment.

Ecuador is home to many different climates, from the windy highlands and volcanoes where you’ll begin your travels, to the warmer river culture of the Amazon basin. Beyond are the Galapagos and coastal regions, where you may choose to extend your journey.

The rare opportunity to work alongside the Amazonian people is bound to be the highlight of your trip. You’ll learn about their unique connection to the jungle and the challenges they face in this remote location. With the pressures of modernization on their doorstep, the Kichwa people are working hand-in-hand with Me To We’s charitable partner—Free The Children—to bring the charity’s holistic international development model to their communities. Join fellow alumni as we come together to help build schools and other vital infrastructure. You’ll meet people who can teach you about their jungle environment and rich traditional culture.

We are pleased to partner with Free The Children, founded by U of T alumnus Craig Kielburger (BA 2007, Hon. LLD 2011), to offer our fourth trip to build a school and make a difference. Previous trips to Kenya have sold out quickly and participants have come back to do a second and third trip! Ecuador is our newest destination.

Learn Along the WayEvery U of T trip has an educational component. In each program, the educational aspect is different but the intent is the same—to provide an opportunity for travellers to enjoy themselves and enrich their lives. Stimulating lectures and insights will be provided by local experts or university professors, where possible. On some trips, you can participate in an open panel discussion with local residents and learn about modern-day life in their community.

If you are inspired to learn more about the region that you are visiting, the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies offers related courses that change annually. The School of Continuing Studies’ Language and Arts courses offer everything from Mandarin to “The Art of Britain”. Learn about the culture and language of both French and Italian food. Please visit: learn.utoronto.ca for more information.
