Exploring the author’s craft

Sometimes being a good writer is just having the willingness and patience to recall and write everything down in a clear manner. And sometimes being a good writer is just being honest; it’s a great start, in any case. Without looking at “A walk to the jetty” again, write two or three paragraphs spelling out the sense impressions, the details, the ideas , and the varied feelings that stood out to you from this piece. The more you can recall from the writing, the more of a tribute it is to the author’s craft.

There is no doubt that growing up is painful and the transition from being a child in order to

become an adult may be a mixture of deep and ambivalent feelings .This is exactly what the

story “A walk to the Jetty” by Jamaica Kincaid describes. This story is a reflection about the

process of maduration and how it involves finding out about hard and probably, shocking

truths.

One of the most unpleasant truth is realizing that things will never be the same again , no

matter how hard you try to go back time.

Throughout the story, you realize how extremely is leaving the place in which you have always

lived in order to create your own life. I imagine you feel as if someone has placed you in a hole

and is forcing you first down and the up against the pressure of gravity. You shook yourself

and you want to wake up from that nightmare; but from the bottom of your heart, you feel

something strong from which you cannot escape. Also, you feel betrayed by your parents;

specially for your mother, to whom you have always been close ; but now she lets you down,

all alone. You feel like everything has been fake, a lie. Eventually, you become aware of the

fact that this event is going to leave a deep scar in your life.

As you are getting away from your place and your older life, you feel a familiar hollow space

And all the details which were insignificant at the beginning, now they become very important

because this will be probably the last time you are going to come back.Suddenly, you feel

dazed and confused. You are on the verge of feeling that it is all a mistake, but you remember

you are not a child anymore because there is something bigger waiting for you ; so you have

to made up your mind in order to reach it. Finally, you say goodbye to your parents, your past

life and you are aware of the changes boiling inside you. Even though you are still not an adult,

this is a new beginning, this is your coming of age.
