Another Pufferbilly Days™ is in the books, and other than a Friday power wash, the weather was once again spot-on and the festival deemed a success. However, it wasn’t without it’s challenges, and going forward some things will have to change or this beloved community celebration may be only a fraction of what it was in its glory days. Namely, volunteer help has fallen off sharply in recent years to the point where Chamber staff have had to take on more and more roles to manage individual events and activities, leaving us bedraggled and beaten down by the end of the week (mind you, we know it’s a long week, but it is unrealistic to expect three people to manage so much). So, beginning immediately, we are going to reboot the festival starting with our Steering Committee. We have been blessed with a half-dozen dedicated folks who have helped shape the look and feel of Pufferbilly Days™ these past few years. However, it’s time to mobilize the next generation to take charge of “their” community celebration (the average age of our Steering Committee mem-bers is 60). Next, we need to engage more members of our community to help keep alive some of the most anticipated activities. The Entertainment Center, Beer Ticket Sales, and Memorabilia Booth were all without any chairpeople in 2016. We pulled it off this year, but that is an unsustainable method of management. Other activities have chairpeople who have served five, eight, or even ten years in their role. It’s time for new individuals to step forward and take the reins. If not, something has to give. Can you imagine Pufferbilly Days™ without a parade? I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but I do hope that this article serves to energize you, friends, or family to consider getting more involved in one of Iowa’s most cherished community celebrations….Pufferbilly Days™

As we say goodbye to summer and say hello to fall we look back at the great events we've had this last couple months. We saw the Farm Progress Show, Supernationals, Pufferbilly Days™ , and Thomas the Tank En-gine. These are all great events that bring extra dollars into the city of Boone. We want to say thank you to all of those that volunteered for any of these events. Without the help of our volunteers many of these events would not happen.

Ogden Legacy had an Open House at a new home built by Tim Schlenker in Ogden. It was the first home started in Ogden in years and the new owners are moving in next week. Ogden Legacy procured the lot and sold it to Mr. Schlenker. The Legacy Housing committee is soliciting funds for a study from ISU Extension and Outreach Community Outreach Economic Development to assess the need for 55+ Senior housing including apartments, condo, rehabilitation or retro fitting existing homes or building for seniors to age in place. The study would show current rents, age populations, races, population and changes since 1900, population by 5 year age groups, percentages of population in different age groups, economic data, house hold incomes, etc. This study would show projected housing needs, available structures, identify potential sites for development and identify financing mechanisms available for developers or the community. .Legacy has secured half of the study's costs from the Leonard Good Trust and is in the process of procuring the rest of the cost from the City and other sources. Fang's Automotive (Auto Repair Shop) opened last month at the corner of Walnut and First Street.

Madrid Action Committee and Community Update
CHAMBER EXPRESS | OCTOBER 2016 12
At the recent Madrid Area Chamber meeting Mayor Dirk Ringgenberg reported that the City council is in the midst of their budgeting process and they continue to look for ways to fund Infrastructure improvements. The Annex road that runs parallel to Highway 17 will be widened and improved. There have been several inquiries about MAC membership from businesses outside of Madrid and the committee discussed incentives to join and the overall dues schedule. Chelsea Nugteren of Nutgeren LLC will conduct a Social Media Marketing Work-shop in November for MAC Members. Final details on the date, time, and cost are being worked out. And the Madrid School District has unveiled their new website with easier to read graphics user interfaces. Check it out at www.madrid.k12.ia.us.

CVB HAPPENINGS
CHAMBER EXPRESS | OCTOBER 2016 16
Boone County is fortunate to have many wonderful attractions. My wife and I visited the Mamie Doud Eisenhower birthplace on Carroll Street in Boone this past weekend.
The one story frame house is nicely maintained and surrounded by attractive gardens. We were greeted warmly by Hannah who gave us a tour of the inside of the home. She spoke about the life of Mamie and the wonderful family heirlooms that adorn each room. My favorite pieces were the pickle container and the chair that unfolds into a step stool. The home also features a summer kitchen, a barn that dis-plays two antique cars and a gift shop.
We had a great visitor experience at this “gem” of a museum.
I was greeted at the door of the Madrid Historical Museum by local historian and longtime Madrid resident Earl Check. The museum is located in several late 18th century buildings on 2nd Street in Madrid. The buildings once housed a bank, police department, fire station and post office. Today, the museum is part of the ongoing downtown revitalization in Madrid. Settled in 1846, Madrid is one of the oldest Swedish settlements in the country. The rich history of the Swedish people is seen throughout the museum. Earl spoke in great detail about each artifact, its story and the local resident connected to it. The museum features Margaret Keigley doll collection, a representation of a coal mine and an impressive collection of military items. Theodore Roosevelt once said “The more you know about your past, the better prepared you are for the future.” The museum is a true gift to the area and an important part of the future for Madrid. Open 10am to noon on Saturdays (and by appointment). 515.795.3249.
