Linda Ross a native of Burlington, Iowa has always had her heart and hands in the arts. At an early age throwing clay on the wheel became her first love. At age sixteen she was given her own pottery wheel. Eager to learn in school, she became an art assistant and continued her education at SCC and Iowa State University. She graduated from the College of Design at ISU with an emphasis in ceramics.

Upon marrying her love Kevin, he created a small studio to put that wheel in! With much trial and error Chestnut Hill Pottery emerged. Raising their two girls Linda had one hand in the slip bucket with the other in the laundry. The art show circuit became an outlet for her wares. Her clientele grew and the studio expanded to include a glaze room, kiln area and show room. Today the studio consists of several electric kilns and a gas fired kiln.

Fast forward, the kids headed to college and in 2009 Linda opened The Artisans Next Door in Fort Madison, Iowa at 616 7th Street, which is adjacent to The Ivy Bake Shoppe, now known as The Apron Bake Shoppe and Cafe. Throwing pots to pay for the educations has been an endeavor all its own. She is a big believer in “shop small and shop local.” “Indeed, it does help to put a kid through college.”

Now it’s Linda time. In 2013 she had a solo show in Fairfield, Iowa at the Steven Sondheim Center. A self proclaimed “mudder,” nothing pleases her more than time at the old wheel. Continuing education is a top priority; she pursues new interests with a soda firing workshop by Brad Schweiger and is inspired by artists Pete Pinelle and Margaret Bohls. She wood fired with the notable Bede Clarke and most recently she took a wheel thrown sculpture class by Gerit Grimm. Wood Fire Potter, Linda Christianson shared her handle-techniques and Joe Pintz’s hand building has created a love for the simple life. It is the cumulative learning that has made her the potter she is. Linda looks forward to the 50th National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts in Kansas City (NCECA) held in March 2016 that will stir new creativity.

An intuitive potter, Linda goes with the ebb and flow of life looking forward to future endeavors. The large gas kiln has allowed her to explore reduction and ash-glazes that utilizes ashes from the warmth of long Iowa winters … Kevin partners in the firing of that beast. Maybe someday a wood fired kiln?

The art circuit for Linda has slowed. She participates in Snake Alley Art Fair in Burlington, IA in conjunction with Steamboat Days. In the fall she gathers with other artists at Walnut Grove Farm in Knoxville, IL. She loves public interaction and looks forward to selling all her new wares, so she can mud even more!

The Fort Madison Area Arts Association (FMAAA) was chartered in 1979, and started in the home of Ruth and Dale Newberry for working artisans in the area to engage in art workshops and share their joy of creating fine art. Since then the FMAAA has been housed in many areas of Avenue G and , including eight years in the renovated Burlington Northern depot. The organization loved the depot location and spent a great deal of money on capital improvements to the facility. However after the flood, the difficult decision was made to leave the depot. The FMAAA now resides at 825 Avenue G and is open from Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00-5:00. As the FMAAA enters a new era, the member artisan gallery boasts over 70 to 90 regional artists, giving the unit a strong variety of mediums and styles. The Place of Fire, our modern glaze studio, is housed in a separate room at the rear of the consignment gallery. This studio is available for birthday parties, badge attainment for Girl Scout troops, and the daily hands-on usage of creating your own one-of-a-kind dishware or figurines. The monthly feature exhibition continues to bring the best artists to the Ft. Madison stage. Annual events have always been a strong suit for the organization, continuing such mainstays as the Annual Garden Tour and Art-in-Central Park, while advancing new initiatives such as Art~ssippi and the FM Ghost Hunt. The FMAAA encourages new membership as it is a funding stream which aids the organization’s goals. At this time the Expressions Art Auction continues to be the main funding mechanism for the organization. Thank you for supporting this event.
