EXTENDING THE LIFE OF BRIDGE ASSETS: CASE STUDIES OF BRIDGE REPAIRS USING CONCRETE REPAIR SOLUTIONS AND CFRP STRENGTHENING

1. CONCRETE DURABILITY – REPAIR OF NEW CONSTRUCTION/EXISTING ASSETS

2. IMPROVING THE LONGEVITY THROUGH STRUCTURAL STRENGTHENING

3. HISTORY OF CFRP INTERNATIONAL

4. CASE STUDY OF TESTING –INTERNATIONAL

5. CASE STUDIES IN AUSTRALIA

CONTENTS

New construction issues ▪ Shrinkage cracking▪ Low Cover▪ Poor Compaction▪ Cosmetic defects▪ Low Strength Concrete▪ Design Errors▪ Post Tensioning issues▪ Durable repairs to meet the

design life.

NEW CONSTRUCTION REPAIRS & DURABILITY

Aging Assets have added issues to deal with:▪ Chlorides▪ Carbonation▪ Fatigue ▪ Under capacity, new codes▪ Cracking from overloading▪ Impact damage▪ Durable repair solutions▪ Impressed current solutions▪ Structural Upgrades

CONCRETE DURABILITY OF EXISTING STRUCTURES

STRUCTURES NEED TO BE MAINTAINED

THE KEY STAGES IN THE REPAIR PROCESSAccording to the European Standard EN 1504, Part 9

▪ Once durability of the concrete has been sorted

▪ What about the structural capacity?

▪ What are the options and down sides?

Tear it down and rebuild?▪ Inconvenience ▪ Cost and Time for the

demolition, rebuild dumping costs

UPGRADING OF OLD STRUCTURES

▪ Once durability of the concrete has been sorted

STRUCTURAL IMPROVEMENT

▪ Traffic load▪ Machine load▪ Vibration reduction▪ Deflection ▪ Impact resistance▪ Seismic resistance▪ Change of standards

▪ Sometimes you cant simply knock down and rebuild.

HERITAGE REFURBISHMENT

TIMBER BRIDGES

THE FAMOUS WOODEN BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER REUSS IN SINS in Switzerland is more than 200 years old and was built in 1807 with an original design capacity of 11 tonne. CFRP installed to achieve a 18 tonne capacity.

MONASH FREEWAY BRIDGE STRENGTHENING

▪ Large amount of supplier input.

▪ Epoxy performance at low temps

▪ Fatigue testing information

▪ Curing information curing in low temperatures.
