BOOK LAUNCH
The Rose Girl Fay Howisons first attempt at being a novelist at the age
of 91 was published at the end of May and launched at a party in Exton
on June 10th The book which is aimed at girls aged 10-14 was started in
order to distract Fays granddaughter Freya who was 11 years old at the
time and having a fine old tantrum Luckily the strategy worked - Freya
became fascinated by the project and contributed a number of plot twists
which quite took her mind off her bad mood Among the other important
decisions for which she took responsibility were the names of the various
animals in the story When the book was finally finished Freyas first
question was What happened next So Fay obediently wrote a sequel
and then another but these are still at the development stage
The Rose Girl is a fairly traditional story - no vampires no aliens no social
media However Freya and her friends all loved it and Freya now 19 and
at LIverpool University still likes to pick it all over whenever she and her
grandmother get together So if anyone is looking for a present for a girl in
the target age-group the book is available at Walkers (Oakham and
Stamford branches) or from the Old School
