Handbook of Extra-curricular Activities

This handbook aims to cover the many activities which are available at Uppingham, apart from lessons. Details of

sports that form part of the School curriculum are shown on the back cover.

Don't wait to be invited to join! In a few cases House Reps will come round to encourage you, but more often than

not it will be up to you to take the initiative. See the Secretary or the member of staff involved for further details.

Many of the meetings are listed in the calendar (White List), but details and news of other events appear on the

notice boards and on the School intranet: don't miss out by failing to read these.

The majority of activities are free, but where there is a fee this will be added to your parents' end-of-term bills.

Please make sure that they approve of such expenses before you undertake the activity.

The Activities Fair, where you can sign up for a lot of the activities, societies and clubs listed in thishandbook, will be held at the beginning of the Autumn Term. Mr Williams, The Director of Music, will also

meet all new pupils on the first weekend of term and talk about how to get involved in ensembles and bands.

Finally, why not use the section below to note down the activities you would like to get involved in, and the clubs and

societies you would like to join. Your Housemaster/Housemistress and Tutor will be keen to chat to you about your

activity choices throughout the year.

Mr Johnstone Director of Activities

June 2015

1584 - THE UPPINGHAMMAGAZINE1584 aims to give a flavour and a

record of life in Uppingham during the

year. The 130+ pages are written

almost entirely by pupils, and edited by a Monday CS

Group as well as members of staff (Mr Hosking and Mr

Wall). It is also open to anyone interested in Journalism,

Photography, Graphic Design (a chance to work with a

professional graphic designer), Creative Writing or even

the organization of a disparate group of people. Design

a page, take a photographic portfolio, write a short

story or report on a School event/trip. Open to all year

groups (limited numbers of Lower Fifth and Upper Fifth

for CS). Back numbers are available in the Library and

boarding houses if you want to get a sense of what’s

required.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUEAre you curious about how you

function and learn? Do you suffer from

neck, back or shoulder pain, or feel

unduly stressed? Then you might be

interested in the Alexander Technique: an education in

balance, movement, and coming alive to your senses.

Used widely by musicians, actors, and sportsmen and

sportswomen, it can also be applied to any other skilled

activity or to everyday living. Pupils report enhanced

performance, better handling of stress, less backache or

headaches, better sleep and other benefits.

The two Alexander teachers are based in the Music

Department but are available to all pupils and staff.

Lessons are 40 minutes weekly like music lessons, and

are charged in the same way, except for music scholars

who can usually have them under their scholarship.

Pupils have lessons for anything from half a term to

several years. You will need permission from your

parents. Contact Miss Waterfield by email or Mrs

McGarrick in the Paul David Music School for further

information.

Staff: Ms Waterfield (PW1) & Mrs Gunningham (CJG)

ALTERNATIVE MUSIC SOCIETYAMS provides opportunities both as a

showcase for Uppingham School bands

and DJs and as a society through which

students can organise rock, jazz or

alternative music events for themselves. Performances

are held two or three times a term in the Theatre,

backed by the enormous AMS sound system, light and

laser show and big screen graphics. Battle of the Bands

also operates within the auspices of AMS and is one of

the most eagerly anticipated events in the school

calendar. From punk and rock to hip-hop and dub-step,

the AMS supplies the best eclectic mix of music. Turn

up to one of the gigs for a modest fee or get more

involved by contacting one of the committee with your

ideas.

BEEKEEPING CLUBThis club looks after the School’s

beehives (about four at present) which

are kept in the Science Department

garden. The hives contain honey bees,

organised into colonies of many thousands, all produced

from eggs laid by the single queen. Managing and

handling bees is something of an art but it can be very

rewarding - honey is produced in the autumn each year.

It’s not hard work, but common sense and a sympathy

with nature are required, and occasionally a little

courage - the bees can certainly sting! However, the

School provides protective gear - all you need to bring

along is your enthusiasm.

This is an ‘occasional’ club as beekeeping is dependent

on the seasons, and the weather, so you don’t have to

sign up - just come along when you are available. To

find out when the next hive visit will take place, get in

touch with Mr Fell - email is best.

Staff: Mr Fell (BPF)

BIBLE STUDYThere are various opportunities to join

a Bible study group around the School.

Groups meet at times and places

convenient to their members. If you

would like to join one, please contact the Chaplain and

he will make arrangements for you.

BRIDGEBridge is an addictive card game that

hones your bluffing, memory, strategy,

teamwork and communication skills.

There are always several tables of

bridge going in Meadhurst on Monday evenings from

9.00pm and sometimes at other times in the week. All

are warmly invited to drop in with card-savvy

beginners particularly welcome. For the more

competitive, we organise Inter-House competitions

and pairs tournaments. Tea and various kinds of cake

are usually on offer.

CADBURY TRAVEL GRANTAn annual grant of money directed

towards travelling and expeditions

taking place in the summer holidays.

The award is now around £2,000. It

requires the planning, preparation and undertaking of a

journey/expedition usually outside the British Isles

which should have an 'educational background' in the

broadest sense. Open to the Lower Sixth and Upper

Fifth. Detailed plans must be in by the end of the spring

term.

Staff: Mr O’Donoghue (RJOD)

CAREERS & HIGHEREDUCATIONThe Careers and Higher Education

Library, upstairs in the Thring Centre, is

open every weekday. It contains up to

date information on careers, work experience, training,

higher education and gap years.

The Lower School will meet the Careers Adviser, Mrs

Palmer, as part of the Life Skills programme to become

familiar with the wide range of library and online,

interactive resources (listed on UppNet). In the Sixth

Form, in addition to the advice and guidance on applying

to higher education, a number of careers seminars and

activities take place including information on careers

taster days, gap years, CV preparation, interview

technique and work experience opportunities. Careers

conventions are held regularly at the School.

Head of Careers: Mr Lovering (DL)

Careers Adviser: Mrs Palmer (TAP)

Head of Sixth Form: Mr O’Donoghue (RJOD)

CARPE DIEMThis club offers Lower Fifth and Fourth

Form pupils a unique chance to get

hands-on with the classical world and

explore the weird and wonderful

elements of ancient societies. What was it like to eat a

dormouse? Did that Emperor actually die in the arena?

Why were they always making sacrifices? Could

Odysseus really beat Achilles in a fight?

Explore the world of Greek and Roman fashion - get

your hands sticky working out how to construct

deliciously chocolatey temples, houses, or even a

gingerbread Colosseum - read the texts that are too

cool (or just plain rude) for school - sample some

'authentic' delicacies at a Roman banquet. All this and

more - reading - acting - philosophising - and of course

partying - they invented the lot so come and explore

some more... and we may even watch (or make) a film

or two!

Staff: Miss Cook (AJC)

CATHOLICSRoman Catholic pupils receive an

invitation to attend Mass in the School

Chapel on a Sunday morning,

players and House teams. We have entered teams for

local School matches, in the Leicestershire League and

also in the British Schools' Championships.

Staff: Mr Lee (JCEL)

CHINESE (MANDARIN) FORBEGINNERSThis is offered as a non-exam subject

taught once a week on Friday

afternoons. Chinese is different in

almost every way from our own language - but that is

what makes it most fascinating. As well as the spoken

language, pupils learn to read and to write Chinese

characters. They also learn about Chinese culture and

food.

CHRISTIAN FORUMAnyone is welcome to come along to

this informal meeting on Thursdays at

8.30pm, in the relaxed atmosphere of

drinks and home-made cakes, an outside speaker gives a

short talk explaining some aspect of Christianity and

how it is relevant today. Do come along and

investigate.

Staff: Mr Wilkinson (RMBW)

CLASSICS SOCIETYThis Society meets regularly in the

Autumn and Spring Terms, on certain

Monday evenings. There are talks by

visiting speakers from top universities

and other schools as well as by Uppingham staff and

pupils. Subject-matter is broad and accessible,

examining everything from culture and language in

ancient Greece to the Roman republic and Latin love

poetry. It is open to any member of the School,

whether studying a Classical subject or not. There is no

subscription.

Pupil Official: Polly Smith (Sa) & Lily Strange (Sa)

Staff: Mr Broadbent (SPB)

CLAY PIGEON SHOOTINGAll year round on occasional Sundays

(11.00am - 3.00pm). Open to any pupil

in the School regardless of prior

experience. Shooting takes place at the

Kibworth Shooting Ground near Market Harborough.

There is no subscription cost, but there is a charge for

use of stands with 50 targets, two boxes of cartridges,

the use of a club gun and full supervision with

instructors and coaches. Maximum of 12 guns per week.

Staff: Mr Beggs (DB1)

CLIMBINGClimbing is offered as an adventure

training activity within the CCF

programme, usually on Monday

afternoons. The climbing wall provides

various grades of challenge, whilst the fabric of the

School itself has also been found to provide some

interesting climbing problems. Climbing can also be

enjoyed as a free time activity with sessions running

after Chapel on most Sunday mornings.

Staff: Mr Allen (WSA)

COMBINED CADET FORCE (CCF)The broad function of the CCF is to

provide a disciplined organisation

within the School so that cadets may

develop powers of leadership by

means of training to promote the qualities of

responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance

and perseverance and a sense of service to the

Community. Most members of the Lower and Upper

Fifth take part, and some continue into the Sixth

Form.

It takes place on Monday afternoons with a short

parade at 2.20pm, followed by section training until

around 4.30pm. New entrants will have a choice

between Navy, RAF and B Squadron which provides

basic Army training, and then in the Upper Fifth there

are two additional options: Advanced Infantry and

Royal Marines.

COMMUNITY SERVICECommunity Service takes place on

Monday afternoons for a few Upper

Fifth and most Lower Sixth pupils. You

can get involved with a wide range of

activities; everything from befriending an older person

in the community to teaching primary school children

Latin, French and maths. There are also opportunities to

work with the Riding for the Disabled charity and

Brightways an organisations that sets up drama and

music activities for children with learning disabilities.

Students build excellent relationships with their CS

people and continue with that option for the whole

academic year.In October we have a Field Day when

around 120 primary school children visit Uppingham

School for the day followed by a concert performed by

CS musicians for older people of the Uppingham

community. We endeavour to offer our time, skills and

assistance to anyone who requests it in our locality.

Doing this helps students develop interests out of

school as well as important skills such as empathy, self-

motivation and responsibility.

Staff: Miss Hayne (CH1)

COMPLINECompline is a very short, peaceful

service for the end of the day, said by

candlelight in the Memorial Chapel on

Wednesday evenings at 9.00 p.m. We

then retire to the Chaplain’s house for hot chocolate

and cake. Everyone is welcome – come every week, or

just occasionally.

Staff: The Chaplain (JBJS)

CONFIRMATIONThe School Confirmation Service, for

pupils wishing to be confirmed in the

Church of England (Anglican/

Episcopalian), takes place on a Sunday in

the Summer term. There is generally a healthy uptake –

50 or 60 pupils is usual – with candidates from across

the year groups. The Chaplain sends a letter to all

parents at the end of the autumn term, asking for

expressions of interest. Confirmation preparation then

takes place weekly after the half-term exeat in the

spring term.

Roman Catholic pupils can be prepared for First

Communion at any point, and for Confirmation on

alternate years (next date in 2017) , in partnership with

local Roman Catholic parishes. Parents of Catholic

pupils will receive the same letter as other parents at

the end of the autumn term, inviting them to express

an interest, but can contact the Chaplain at any time to

discuss the options.

Staff: The Chaplain (JBJS)

COOKERY CLUBEver watched Masterchef, or The Great

British Bake Off, and just known that it

should be you in that kitchen? Love

baking, experimenting with new flavours

and entertaining friends and relations with your

confections? Even if you just love to eat, Cookery Club

could be the one for you! Several teachers will guide

you through different aspects of cookery with the

opportunity to sample the delights of different cultures.

Competitions will occasionally take place but even if

you just like cooking without the pressure of rivals

glaring jealously over at your workspace, there should

still be plenty of opportunities for you to play away in

Windmill House kitchens, learn new techniques and

recipes and savour the mouth-watering results.

Cookery Club is now open to all year groups and will

take place on a half-termly basis (or more often if

staffing permits).

Staff: Mrs Hunting (MNH)

DEBATINGTwo House debating competitions take

place each year: 'Overs' (Sixth Form

only) in the autumn term, and 'Unders'

(all other year groups) in the spring

term. This is debating in a rather formal style, roughly

following the ESU's 'Schools Mace' format. Both are

knockout competitions, hotly contested throughout the

term and culminating in a final during the last week

which is judged by the Headmaster. House teams are

put together by House Captains, so if you show any

talent in this direction you should expect to be

approached in due course!

House debating is a great chance to develop some all-

important skills - constructing a sound argument,

getting your point across in a persuasive way, thinking

on your feet as your views are challenged. The School

also enters a number of national competitions such as

the Schools Mace, Debating Matters, and the Oxford

Schools’ - check out their websites for more details.s.

attend and photograph School events.

You will be provided with School equipment, and the

photographs you take will be uploaded onto the School

network; many will then be published via UPPnet.

You will earn points for any photograph that is used in

a School publication (other than UPPnet) and there are

UppYours: THE OTHERUPPINGHAM MAGAZINEUppYours is the fairly recent creation

of some free-thinking Lower Sixth

students, who aim to bring

entertainment to the masses through satire and

parody. The UppYours team have brought you such

journalistic masterpieces as 'Overheard in Uppingham'

and 'Dress Your RS Teacher', as well as commenting

comedically on general issues faced by the average

Uppinghamian.

The ten-page magazine is produced once every half

term and disseminated among the boarding houses. It

is written entirely by students and sub-edited by

members of staff). Writing and creating the magazine

has been led by Sixth Form students via email and

weekly meetings, and increasingly the lower years are

getting involved, finding their satirical voices.

Editors: Jak Foster (WB) and Millie Purton (NH)

WATER SKIINGTakes place on Tuesday and Thursday

variable charge is payable. Upper Sixth

WRITERS' BLOCWriters' Bloc is for people who enjoy

writing. A group of people will meet

informally with a member of staff or a

visiting writer to try their hand at

journalism, drama, fiction or poetry. All year groups are

welcome, and so are those with IT publishing skills: one

aim is to produce an anthology.

Please contact Mrs Miller (CAM) for further details.
