Message from the General Manager

Message from the Premier of South AustraliaUnder our University City initiative, the South Australian Government is ambitiously committed to establishing Adelaide as a great education destination . We aim to be as world-renowned for the quality of the education opportunities we provide as we are for our food, wine and culture .

We have already made significant progress towards achieving this goal, with renowned universities from the UK and the United States establishing a presence in Adelaide, and our international student population booming . Our local universities and schools are of the very highest quality .

Indeed, over the years, Adelaide has been credited with more Nobel Prize winners than any other Australian city .

There are currently more than 29,500 international students who have chosen to study in South Australia, and they make a vital contribution to the economic, social and cultural life of our city .

We lead the way in providing safe, high-quality education and – through Education Adelaide – we were the first Australian State to establish a comprehensive student and community support program .

Surveys continue to confirm Adelaide’s standing as one of the world’s most liveable cities, with a lower cost of living than other Australian mainland capitals . International students have the potential to shape the future of our State, our nation and our region in profound and enduring ways .

I commend our education and training providers, including Eynesbury, for the role they are playing to help realise this vision .

The South Australian Government looks forward to continuing to work closely with all our institutions to further forge Adelaide’s reputation as a truly world-class learning city .

Dan Edmonds PrincipalICHM

International College of Hotel Management (ICHM)

Established in 1992, in partnership with the Swiss Hotel Association (SHA) and the South Australian Government, the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM) prepares students for a successful career at the top end of the international hotel industry . For more than a century, the Swiss Hotel Association (SHA) has been the official organisation for the hotel industry in Switzerland, setting the standards in hotel management education for the rest of the world to follow .

ProgramsTwo programs are offered at ICHM, the Swiss Hotel Association Diploma of International Management and ICHM Bachelor of International Hotel Management, a university level qualification achievable with an additional year of study after successful completion of the SHA Diploma .

www .ichm .edu .au

In 1993, 47 students from Australia and 10 other countries formed the International College of Hotel Management’s (ICHM) first intake . Today ICHM boasts record enrolments, and students have come from more than 80 countries . We now have graduates in all continents enjoying successful careers .

Every year we attract a number of the sons and daughters of hoteliers from around the world . This has to say something about the recognition ICHM enjoys within the industry!

Throughout our history we have had a close relationship with Eynesbury College . Hundreds of students have first enrolled in Eynesbury to improve their English or to undertake a Foundation Program prior to commencing their studies with ICHM . This seamless pathway is convenient for students, and visa-packages that include both ICHM and Eynesbury courses are frequently used .

ICHM lecturers visit Eynesbury, and Eynesbury students will visit ICHM’s

Regency Park campus 1-2 times a semester . Eynesbury’s staff know the ICHM program well, and students are well prepared for the hospitality industry .

ICHM offers a challenging and practical way to learn ‘How to Manage a Business’ . Our graduates complete a program that is not only recognised by the hotel industry, but many other businesses choose our graduates as well . Our graduate outcomes include good commercial skills, excellence in communication, a professional attitude to getting the job done, significant paid work experience and employer recognition .

Many of our graduates have specifically commented that the preparation at Eynesbury had enabled them to be successful in their studies at ICHM .

We look forward to having our students prepared for their ICHM studies by Eynesbury for years to come .

Support while you study

Student servicesEynesbury Student Services are located on the ground floor of the new Coglin Street campus enabling easy access for students . Included in Student Services are admissions and student support staff and the Accommodation Office . The Student Services team is there to support and assist students throughout their time at Eynesbury . The recent AUQA audit report commended EIBT on its success in creating a caring learning environment that is cognisant of the needs of its diverse student groups .

Student ExperienceParticipating in student events and activities provides the opportunity for developing broader friendship networks whilst increasing your knowledge of Adelaide and creating links within the community . It is important for students to have a balance between their social and academic life and these aspects will help students to make their experience in Adelaide the best it can be . At Eynesbury the Student Experience Coordinator is responsible for such events .

Sports and Social ActivitiesAt Eynesbury students have access to a wide range of sports and social activities to enhance their experience in Adelaide . Participating in these activities is a great way to meet friends and get to know Adelaide . Activities include; day trips, tours, bushwalking, going to the beach, sports and more . There are many cultural and music festivals in Adelaide; these include the Royal Adelaide Show, Fringe Festival, WOMAdelaide, OzAsia and more .

Volunteer ProgramsStudents may wish to learn new skills by participating in volunteer programs . The Eynesbury Student Leadership Program is an opportunity for students to provide feedback on areas in Eynesbury, whilst the Social Committee assists in the preparation and running of social events in collaboration with the Student Experience Coordinator . Many students also get involved with their local community through a range of volunteer programs particularly with their local council . This is a great way to meet locals and become part of the community .

Job Search and ResumesJob Search workshops are available and at these workshops students can receive guidance in how to find jobs in Adelaide . The workshops cover preparing for job interviews, what type of jobs students should apply for, where to find these vacant positions and advice on how to write a resume .

Overseas Student Health CoverIt is a condition of International Student visas that students have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of their stay in Australia . A representative from Eynesbury’s preferred provider visits the campus on a weekly basis to assist students with any queries they may have .

Counselling and guidance Private and confidential counselling is available to support students as they adjust to the many differences they will experience whilst living and learning in their new environment . Assistance is available for any kind of concern that a student may encounter during their time at Eynesbury, including personal, academic and tertiary pathway matters . At orientation students will meet the counsellor and be fully informed of the many ways in which support is available for them .

Airport receptionStudents who arrange accommodation through the Eynesbury Accommodation Office will be met at the airport and transported to their accommodation . This service is provided free of charge but must be arranged with the Accommodation Office prior to arrival .

South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) SACE is an internationally recognised senior secondary qualification administered by the SACE Board of South Australia . SACE is the program of the South Australian Government taken by students to gain entry into university and is recognised in all states of Australia as an entry qualification for university .

The SACE certificate provides flexibility in the way students earn credits towards completing their SACE . It is designed to make sure that students gain essential skills for their future . These skills include the ability to communicate well, get on with others and take initiative in life, study and work .

SACE is awarded upon successful completion of Years 10, 11 & 12, the final years of secondary schooling in South Australia . To gain the certificate students must earn 200 credits . Ten credits are equivalent to one semester or six months study in a subject .

International students who have completed a senior secondary program that is considered the equivalent of Stage 1 (Year 11) will be granted status for up to 110 credits provided they can demonstrate that they have met the literacy and numeracy requirements . They will also be granted status for the Personal Learning Plan . Students who begin Stage 1 studies in Semester 2 and who have Visa Class 571 with an expiry date less than 24 months from the commencement of SACE will be granted status for the Personal Learning Plan .

Senior High School (Years 10, 11 & 12) programEynesbury College offers Senior High School students a pathway to first year university in Australia .

SACE Credit Structure (200 credits)

110 credits of the 200 credits required for the SACE are achieved through compulsory subjects .

These are:

• At least 20 credits towards literacy from a range of English/English as a Second Language subjects at Stage 1

• At least 10 credits towards numeracy from a range of Mathematics subjects at Stage 1

• A major Research Project at Stage 2, (Year 12) worth 10 credits [usually started in Stage 1 and completed at Stage 2]

• Completion of 60 additional credits at Stage 2

Students must achieve either grades of A, B, C or equivalent in these subjects to complete the SACE successfully . The remaining 90 credits can be gained through additional Stage 1 or Stage 2 subjects or Board-recognised courses of a student’s choice . For university entry, students need to achieve 80 credits at Stage 2 .

In 1992 Eynesbury College delivered the first University Foundation Studies Program (FSP) in the state on behalf of the University of Adelaide . In 1994 Flinders University and the University of South Australia joined the program which became the South Australian Universities’ Foundation Studies Program .

The Foundation Studies Program provides an excellent preparation for tertiary study, maintaining high academic standards and giving careful attention to the individual needs of international students .

Foundation students are given provisional admission into the degree of their choice^ subject to performance in the Foundation Studies Program . Admission is confirmed when students complete the Program and achieve the necessary entry score for that degree as set by the relevant target university . For details of entry scores for degrees, please consult individual university undergraduate prospectuses .

Why choose the SA Universities’ Foundation Studies Program?• FSP is specifically designed to cater for

the needs of international students .

• Provides entry to all available courses^ at the three South Australian universities (subject to meeting entry requirements) .

• FSP students are enrolled as university students .

• FSP students packaged with the University of Adelaide and Flinders University enjoy facilities and support services of both their target university and Eynesbury College .

• FSP students have guaranteed places in degree courses^ providing they achieve the appropriate entry score and meet the subject and language prerequisites .

There are five streams of specialisation:

Business, Humanities, Health Sciences, Engineering and Science.

• FSP students may start in either January (Standard Program – 12 months), April (Accelerated Program – 8 months) or October (Accelerated Program – 8 months or Extended Program – 15 months) .

• The South Australian Universities’ Foundation Studies Program is recognised for entry into interstate universities (subject to meeting entry requirements) including the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, Monash University, the University of Queensland and the University of Western Australia .

Performance at university A recently completed study of the performance of Eynesbury FSP graduates admitted to the University of Adelaide from 1992 – 2003 shows that, to date:

• 82% of students have graduated with a University of Adelaide degree .

• 31 .5% of the students have graduated with Honours .

• 20% of the students were awarded Prizes .

Foundation students benefit from being part of a combined English Language (ELICOS) Centre and senior secondary college for local and international students .

The Foundation Studies Program has an outstanding record of

success . Since 1994 Eynesbury College has provided a Foundation

Studies Program for the three South Australian Universities .

The Standard Foundation Studies Program commences in January and is completed in December . An Accelerated FSP commences in April and ends in December . These two programs lead to the February intake of university . In addition an Accelerated FSP commencing in September prepares students for mid-year (July) entry to university . The Accelerated FSP is ideally suited to students with above average academic and language skills . The Accelerated courses mostly cover the same content as the Standard FSP, but some applications of theory may be omitted .

Students enrolled in Standard FSP study several of their subjects with Australian Year 12 High School students, e .g . physics, chemistry, biology, economics and others . The following course hours may be subject to slight changes .

Core Courses

The following three courses are compulsory for all FSP students:

• Language and Communication (4 hours per week – full course)

• International Studies (2 hours – half course)

• Clear Thinking and Logic (2 hours – half course)

Elective Courses

Depending on the degree pathway, students taking the Standard FSP (or Stage 2 of the Extended FSP) must take at least three electives from the list in the table

below . Students taking the Accelerated FSP (starting in April) must choose at least three electives from the Science, Business, Health Sciences and Engineering streams and Environmental Studies .

Students taking the Accelerated FSP (starting in September) must take at least three elective courses . Students attend four hours per week for each elective course .

Student achievement score

Student assessments for Standard and Accelerated FSP are based on work completed throughout the year and on a final examination held at the end of the course . Each full course is marked out of 100 and the marks of the two half courses (50 each) are added together and counted as one full course .

An aggregate score out of 500 is calculated . For students taking three electives this is a simple addition of all marks .

Students must achieve a score of 60% or more in Language and Communication, and 275 overall to be considered for admission, subject to specific degree entry scores and quotas . This provides a base score for consideration for entry to Australian universites .

Helping students achieve their goals

“Before coming to Adelaide, I was a bit worried about starting a new life away from home, because I did not have any relatives or friends here. However, after the first few days going to Eynesbury, I was already relaxed, because of the people I met.

As the other students in the Foundation Studies Program were also from overseas, we could help each other and support each other.

The teachers were also very helpful. They not only helped us with schoolwork, but also in blending into the local lifestyle.”

Tsui Ka Ya, Gary (Hong Kong)Foundation Studies Program 2007, Flinders University, Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics 2008

“I don’t think I could find any better place to study than EIBT. It is affordable, fun and easy to meet people. The Diploma of Business has been absolutely fantastic. Everything is so connected in terms of university study and EIBT study.

The staff and students were from many different countries, and we got along really well. EIBT has been very supportive. If I had any troubles or questions the kind lecturers, the lovely administration staff and the supportive Director were waiting to help.

The academic environment is fantastic. Due to the small size of the lectures, students get a chance to talk and share ideas. Everybody in the class is free to ask questions and point out their ideas.”

Wang, Shi Heng, Tiffany (China)EIBT 2007Flinders University, Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) 2008

“Studying in Eynesbury was one of the best opportunities that I was given.

The teachers were wonderful, they showed me the way to work in a new environment and how to work with responsibility. They always helped me with warmness and whole-heartedness.

The time I had in Eynesbury was enjoyable and so much fun. If there is something I can say about Eynesbury College, I will say that Eynesbury is one of the best pathways to achieve success!“

“I Love Eynesbury!

Eynesbury is the best English school that I have ever attended. It has a good environment for studying English. There are many great teachers and also many students from different nationalities so my English improved a lot.

I had a great time and it was a truly unforgettable experience. I have no regrets studying at Eynesbury.”

“To sum it up, the quality of the teaching I received at Eynesbury was excellent. Lessons were, more often than not fun and interesting. Best of all, learning was made easy due to the diligence and patience of the teachers in ensuring the students fully understood the lessons at hand.

Eynesbury showed me the `real world’ and eased me into the expectations of tertiary education whilst supporting me all the way. I believe Eynesbury has given me the confidence to face the world and prepared me for future ventures into academia.

I will continue enjoying the company of Australian people for many years to come. I plan very much to work here and see more of this amazing country.

I absolutely love it here.”

Seviella Susilo (Indonesia)ELICOS 2007International College of Hotel Management 2008

Norman Goh – Norman (Malaysia) Foundation Studies Program 2008The University of Adelaide, Bachelor of Chemical Engineering 2008

“Eynesbury Senior College has provided me with a basic knowledge in order to boost my understanding in university. Moreover, it has enabled me to get into the course that I wanted to.

Thanks to teaching and staff members for being humble and kind to us. My chemistry teacher and the Counsellor have been very supportive for me and hope every student gets the chance to experience the same.

From my personal experience, Adelaide is a great city to study. For instance, cheap, less crowded, easy to travel, friendly people and lots of fun. Besides that, an amazing factor about Australia is its multiculturalism. It has really helped me to understand and appreciate other cultures besides, Hinduism, my religion.

Finally, my experience in Eynesbury College has been a blast. I Hope every student has the same!”
