Recent reforms and legislaon in Cuba
have been interpreted in the media and by
polical commentators as a move towards
a capitalist free market. Cubas supporters
argue the measures are necessary to im-
prove the eciency of the socialist system
and secure the Revoluon in its 53 rd year.
Cubas enemies aempt to link the pres-
ence of a small, well-paid domesc oppo-sion to the popular uprisings witnessed
during the Arab spring. Conversely, the
Cuban government has facilitated every
cizen to parcipate in an open debate
about the countrys socio-economic prob-
lems and contribute suggesons towards
resolving those.
Between 9th and 23rd February 2012, ac-
vists from the solidarity campaign Rock
Around the Blockade will travel to Cubato nd out: What lies behind the recent
reforms and how will they eect Cuban
socialism? Whether the Cuban Revolu-
on retains its mass support among the
populaon? What is the impact of the US
blockade on Cuban development? Is Cuba
able to maintain its high-standard, uni-
versal welfare provision during the global
economic crisis which has seen the public
sector under threat in the wealthiest naons?
The brigadistas will visit numerous cen-
tres, instuons and organisaons on the
island. As well as meeng polical lead-
ers, they will carry out voluntary labour
in factories and farms. They will visit old
peoples homes, maternity homes, youth, community and sports centres, schools
and hospitals vital public services which
are under aack today from the ConDem
government in Britain. They will visit a
hospital which treats children with cancer
and learn about the medicines denied to
them by the US blockade.
The acvists will present a donaon of
sports equipment for Cuban youth, in the
year of the London Olympics.
