Founded in 2001, the Tamil Literary Garden is a Toronto based charitableorganization committed to promoting the development of literature andstudies in Tamil internationally. Its mandate includes awards, creative writing,scholarship to students, translations, book releases, Tamil theatre performances, conferences and workshops. It recognizes that despite therichness and significance of contemporary writing, very little has been doneto promote or to celebrate the authors who have made major contributionsto Tamil. Among its activities, the event that takes centre stage is a LifetimeAchievement Award, given annually to a writer, scholar, critic or editor, whoover a period of time has made very significant contribution to the growth orstudy of Tamil literature. The Lifetime Achievement Award ( also known as IyalVirudhu ) consists of a plaque and a cash prize of C$2500.

The Tamil Literary Garden also has instituted other awards: Awards for Fiction,Non-fiction, Poetry, Information Technology in Tamil, Translation andScholarship to an undergraduate enrolled in a Tamil studies program. It alsoorganizes Tamil Theatre performances (Naddu Koothu) and lecture series inconjunction with the Department of English - University of Toronto.

order to encourage and promote Tamil Studies in thediaspora, particularly among the second generation.The essay topic for this year is 'Renegotiating NewMeanings of Self in Tamil Canadian Diaspora'. Theessay presented this year by Yugendra was both thor-ough and clearly articulated and was selected by thepanel of judges for the second award.

Yugendra was born in Manama, Bahrain in 1987 andimmigrated to Canada when he was 3 years old. He hascompleted a diploma in Business from the SenecaCollege of Arts and Technology. His creativity stemsfrom being raised in a multicultural city which nurtured

his love of literature and musical art forms from ayoung age. He credits his family for helping him over-come his early struggles adapting to life in Canadawhile cultivating his connection with his Tamil heritage.His interests in his Tamil roots were further stimulatedafter visiting India and Sri Lanka in 2002 and again in2013. Yugendra is working towards a ProjectManagement Professional designation. He also intendsto continue fostering his abilities in the art of philan-thropy by using his expertise for the promotion ofTamil in an international forum. Vasugi Kailasam is originally from Chennai, India. Shereceived her Bachelors degree in English Literaturefrom Stella Maris College, Chennai. During her time asa Masters student of Comparative Literature at theSchool of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS),University of London, she became interested in SriLankan literature and film. In March 2015, she defend-ed her doctoral thesis "Textual Spaces of

Reconciliation: Reading Postcolonial Sri Lanka" atthe Department of English in the National University ofSingapore. Her thesis is a comparative literary projectthat analyzes English and Tamil literature and film pro-duced from 2000-2009, the last decade of the war in SriLanka.This thesis investigates the potential of literatureand film as rich sites that can provoke discussion aboutthe ethical and political stakes in forging reconciliationin Sri Lanka. She is currently working on a manuscriptbased on her dissertation.

Vasugi was one of the co-organisers of the World TamilUniversity Youth conference (WTUYC 2012) conductedby the Tamil Language Society at the NationalUniversity of Singapore. Held in July 2012, WTUYC 2012was a pioneer effort to craft a platform for youth ofTamil origin to discuss and debate their Tamil identitiesin a global world. Vasugi is part of a team that co-founded a Singapore based education services compa-ny called "Critique" that conducts workshops aimed atdiscussing the evolving identity issues of Tamil-speak-ing youth around the world.

Fiction award is given in memory of ProfessorKanapathipillai Born in 1903, he received his under-graduate and graduate education inColombo, Sri Lanka, Annamalai, TamilNadu, and the University of London,UK. Trained in Tamil, Sanskrit and Pali,he acquired considerable expertise in

the field of epigraphy. After completing his doctoral stud-ies under the supervision of Professor Turner, he joined

the University of Colombo as lecturer in Tamil, and laterbecame professor.When the University of Peradeniya wasestablished, he became the first Professor and Head ofthe Department of Tamil, a position he held until 1965.For a brief period, he also served as Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Peradeniya. ProfessorKanapathipillai is known as a major scholar in epigraphyand linguistics. In addition, he published widely as a nov-elist, short story writer, and playwright. His plays wereperformed to much acclaim in Sri Lanka. In addition, hehas written a monograph on the history of Sanskrit litera-ture.

Having graduated at the age of 19, heentered University of Cambridge in1924 and studied Physics under 9Nobel Prize winners and founders ofmodern Physics. He also had the priv-ilege of attending lecture by Albert

Einstein in Germany. On his return to Ceylon, afterobtaining a first class honors Tripos and M.A andPh.D from the University of Cambridge wasappointed Professor of Physics at the University ofCeylon and subsequently, Dean of the Faculty ofScience, Pro-Vice-Chancellor University of Ceylon.He had the privilege of being the first Sri LankanProfessor of Physics. For nearly 50 years he wasassociated with university teaching and served aschairman on many academic councils and commis-sions including the University Grants Commission.He was awarded the honorary Degree of Doctor of

Science (Honoris Causa) by the University of Jaffnaand Colombo. Also, was honored by Her Majesty theQueen Elizabeth II with the O.B.E and by thePresident of Sri Lanka with the “Vidya Jyothi”awards. Served on the commission appointed byThe Ceylon Governor General to report on the feasi-bility of teaching Science, Medicine, Agriculture andEngineering in Swabasha. He was a member of theCouncil of the University of Jaffna and also translat-ed to Tamil, Educational Publications, and a numberof Physics Text for examinations ranging from theAdvanced Level to B.Sc. Special. He also popular-ized the field of Science in the Tamil media by deliv-ering talks over the Radio and Tamil News Media.He pioneered the Tamil University Movement thatled to the establishment of the University of Jaffnaand later Eastern University of Sri Lanka. In recogni-tion of his contributions to Physics, the academia inSri Lanka has established the MailvaganamMemorial Lecture each year at the Physics LectureTheatre at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Dr. Brenda Beck holds a D.Phil. in SocialAnthropology from Oxford University(1968). Her research work has focused

on the Culture and Folklore of Tamilnadu. From 1969 to1983 she taught Anthropology and South Asian Studiesat the University of British Columbia. In 1983 Dr. Beckresigned that Full Professorship to focus more effective-ly on the broader field of Educational PublicCommunications. Initially Brenda worked for a consult-ing firm in Toronto. Then, in 1986, she formed her ownvideo production company. In 2004 she also started afederally licensed charitable foundation: The SophiaHilton Foundation of Canada. In addition, Dr. Beck cur-rently holds an honorary, non-salaried position ofAdjunct Professor in the Department of Anthropology atThe University of Toronto. She has lectured extensivelyaround the world and has twice received all-expenses

paid invitations from India to share her work with thepeople of Tamilnadu.

Working through The Sophia Hilton Foundation ofCanada Dr. Beck recently completed directing the ani-mated production of Tamil oral epic known in English asTHE LEGEND OF PONNIVALA(nadu). Her goal has beento share this culturally important story with people of allages, and to help viewers better appreciate some of thejoy, colour and depth of South Indian culture in general.Her 26 episode animated series has recently been broad-cast, in both English and Tamil, by the Asian TelevisionNetwork in Canada and, in Tamil only, by Thanthi TV,Chennai. Dr. Beck has now fashioned a two-volume full-colour graphic novel set intended to summarize thisvideo series. That work, already available via the web,will soon become a conventional publication thanks toThe Nachimuthu Industrial Association of Coimbatore,Tamilnadu, who have endorsed this initiative and willfeature it as their 2015 charitable, education-focusedproject with an intention of distributing this work widelyto schools in their home state.

Kirubaharan Sinnadurai was born in the Trincomalee district of Sri Lanka in the year 1960. He wasa student in dentistry in the University when he died. Throughout his short life he was an ardentsupporter of Tamil language and culture and committed to its promotion on an international level.An award in Tamil has been set up in his memory. Information Technology in TamilAward is given in memory ofSundara Ramaswamy Sundara Ramaswamy began his literary career at the age of 20 bytranslating a Malayalam novel intoTamil. Following this ‘The Story of a

Tamarind Tree’, his first novel was published andwas well received as a work that extended thefrontiers of Tamil novel. This was translated intoEnglish, Hindi, Malayalam and Hebrew.His second novel "J.J. Some Notes" defied all thenotions prevalent in Tamil writing about formand language. It eschewed narration, brought ina tone of intense meditation on the quality ofhuman life and the problems of remaininghuman. The third novel Kulanthaikal, PenkalAnkal was written in an entirely new style andlanguage yet retaining a solid texture.His poems are a severe questioning into one's

existence, perceptions, conflicts and tireless butoften defeated search. Almost all ofRamaswamy's writings, though reaching limitedreadership, have sustained serious literary workin Tamil during the last fifty years. He has alsocontributed significantly to the disciplines of literary criticism and essays and has translatedpoems from English to Tamil.He was awarded the prestigious Kumaran AsanMemorial Award for his collection of poems andin 2001 the Tamil Literary Garden of Canada inassociation with the Centre for South AsianStudies of University of Toronto awarded the IyalVirudhu.

Late Mr. V.T. Ratnam served in the world of journalism art for over 40 years inSri Lanka. His life started as a beat-reporter with Eelanadu, Suthanthiran andThinakaran newspapers then continued as an Editorial Board member ofThinapathi daily until his demise in 1990. Mr. Ratnam also contributed heavilyand whole-heartedly towards the enhancement of Tamil culture and Hinduism.As a person who lived in a Colombo suburb cherished with Muslim neighbours,Mr. Ratnam never needed an address to receive mail or visitors. Even today,twenty-three years after his demise, children born after him would take visitorsto his house just by asking for “Iya’s veedu”. It's just a simple evidence for his trueembracement of multiculturalism and communal integration. In his lovingmemory an award for Translation (Tamil to English) has been established by hisbeloved son Kumar Ratnam to honour his commitment and passion for TamilLiterature.

Ranjith Selva had a love for Tamil literature which came to fruition early in his life.Later when he worked in the Middle East, where he excelled in his banking careerhe expressed a strong desire with the launch of the Tamil Literary Garden in theyear 2001 to work closely with it in the promotion of its work on an internationalbasis. He was in the process of moving to Toronto when he took the initiative toreignite his love of Tamil literature and had made his contributions in variousways. Unfortunately, Ranjith passed away and his involvement with the TamilLiterary Garden ended before it truly began. A legacy that is Ranjith Selva is a legacy that is vibrant and exuberant in its presence. In his loving memory a sponsorship has been established by his daughter, Bairavee Ranjith to honour hiscommitment and passion for Tamil Literature that has longevity beyond just hislifetime.
