Medical Care of Vulnerable and Underserved Populations

Publicly insured and uninsured patients make up about half ofall outpatient visits in the US, and millions more previouslyuninsured patients have gained access to health care throughthe Affordable Care Act. Becoming an expert in caring for thecomplicated medical and social needs of vulnerable andunderserved patients is crucial to every healthcare provider.World-class experts and front-line practitioners from theZuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Centerand the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations will presentapproaches to mitigate the challenges in caring for vulnerablepopulations and enhance the profound joy clinicians canexperience when engaging with patients in greatest need.Topics to be covered include updates in a broad range ofdiseases that disproportionately affect vulnerable patients,such as diabetes, Hepatitis C, HIV, depression, PTSD, heartfailure, and hypertension. In addition, we discuss howclinicians can address social factors that complicate themanagement of medical illness such as low health literacy,intimate partner violence, and food insecurity, to name but afew. We will also tackle how best to integrate behavioral healthcare for patients with chronic pain, severe mental illness,substance use and complex post-traumatic stress. Each daywe will feature a nationally renowned figure in the field of thecare of vulnerable populations who will deliver pearls andimpart wisdom with respect to how to stay engaged, connectedand inspired in this work.GREENER MEETINGWe're saving paper! TARGET AUDIENCEThis activity is appropriate for all specialties, particularly for thosehealth care providers that work with underserved patients inteaching, safety net, or community practices. Physicians, primarycare, and subspecialists, advance practice providers, primary careproviders, psychologists, public health practitioners, and nurseswould all find our material educational.

OBJECTIVESAn attendee completing this course will be able to: • Describe an approach to considering social vulnerability inmedical care;

• Recognize the effect of food insecurity on patient outcomes;• Review what is meant by Trauma Informed Care;• Describe an approach to the care of a patient with a history ofincarceration;

• Review the importance of oral care to overall health and the roleof primary care in promoting oral care through the ages;

• Review an approach to the care of underserved adolescents;• Describe an approach to caring for immigrant patients;• Review health care economics for the underserved;• Discuss pharmacologic treatments of alcohol disorder.
