THE LASALLIAN SOLIDARITY FOR PEACE FORUM HELD last March
20 on campus featured a talk by the founding president and
executive director of Teach Peace Build Peace Movement, a non-
profit organization that aims to make every Filipino child and youth
a peace builder.
Guest speaker Bai Rohaniza Sumndad is a Maranao Princess
and chair of the Young Moro Professionals Network. She is the
first Filipino to receive the DOHA International Center for Interfaith
Dialogue Best Individual Award because of her peace building and
interfaith work for children and youth.
She is also a recipient of the 2013 “Emerging Peace Champion”
Award from the N-Peace Network organized by United Nations
Development Program, highlighting women who empower
communities and who are exemplary peace builders.
Forum participants expressed their support for further peace
building projects at DLSU, such as the establishment of a
DLSU chapter of the Teach Peace Build Peace Movement. Deaf
students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, for their part,
performed through sign language, the idea that “peace is all about
compassion, regardless of the religion or culture we belong to.”
DLSU’s Center for Social Concern and Action, together with the
Lasallian Formation and Action Team, Political Science Society,
and DLS-CSB Center for Social Action, sponsored the event.

Villavicencio Board Room of the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall was led by
Shell companies in the Philippines Country Chairman Edgar Chua
and DLSU OIC President and Chancellor Br. Dennis Magbanua
FSC.
The partnership project aims to establish a center of excellence
on water research that can be utilized by public, private, and
civil society sectors for water resource efficiency research and
projects, both at the local and regional levels.
To signify its commitment to the partnership, Shell PPT Manila
presented a check of P8.5 million as seed fund for the project.
DLSWRC will use a multidisciplinary approach to addressing
critical issues using perspectives from both hard and soft
sciences. The center will provide a focal point around which
project teams may converge.
Teams may be formed from any of the eight De La Salle tertiary
institutions in the Philippines.

A STAR SCHOLAR AND SUMMA CUM LAUDE CANDIDATE of De La
Salle University’s College of Computer Studies clinched one of
the top 3 prizes awarded by the Bank of the Philippine Islands
Foundation (BPI) and the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST) during the 2015 BPI-DOST Science Awards held at The
Mind Museum in Taguig last March 12.
Alron Jan Lam, a Software Technology major, bagged the third
place for his project entitled, “Breadcrumb: An Indoor Simultaneous
Localization and Mapping System for Mobile Devices,” which could
enable users to have access to indoor positioning systems, much
like the Global Positioning System (GPS), for commercial spaces.
The other winners came from Ateneo de Davao University and
University of the Philippines Diliman.
Now on its 26th year, the BPI-DOST Science Awards has
recognized over 700 outstanding science awardees from its partner
universities nation-wide. It encourages promising young students
to reach higher levels of excellence in the fields of mathematics,
physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, and biology.
The Best Project of the Year grand winner received P50,000
and a scholarship grant from DOST, the first runner up received
P30,000, and while P10,000 was awarded to the second runner-
up. In addition, all of the 29 science awardees, including the Best
Project of the Year winners, will receive P25,000 and a plaque of
recognition.
DLSU HELD A SPORTS CLINIC FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY
PLAYERS of the F.G. Calderon National High School, with Green
Archers varsity players Arnold Van Opstal and Jason Perkins
leading the Lasallian community engagement.
The sports clinic was part of the “Adopt a Public School Program”
of the Lasallian Mission family to engage marginalized children
in collaborative activities with DLSU members. It was held last
March 27 at the F.G. Calderon National High School, with the
Lasallian Mission Community Engagement Committee facilitating
the event.
Participants of the activity included 30 students and teachers,
while approximately 500 students attended the sports orientation.
Van Opstal and Perkins taught basic basketball drills and
exercises and played with the participants. They also gave away
some gifts such as La Salle shirts and ID laces.
Event sponsor Jollibee provided food for the sports clinic
participants.
In a related development, the Lasallian Mission family noted that
its ongoing campaign, “Adopt a Child, Feed a Child Project”
with the F.G. Calderon National High School has contributed to
the zero dropout rate in the school, as reported by its school
administrators.
THE MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT
DEPARTMENT HOSTED the lecture entitled, “Smart health data in
the era of health big data” held last March 23 at the seminar room
on the 5th floor of the Yuchengco Hall.
Prof. Raouf Naguib, director of the UK-based BIOCORE Research &
Consultancy International, discussed the nature and sources of big
data in digital health, and explored some of the various challenging
questions resulting from the need of its efficient exploitation.
“The results of such investigations in the medical and health
contexts should lead to a transformation from big data to a much
smarter health data focusing on the actionable value achieved by
human involvement in its creation, processing and consumption
phases for improving the human experience,” he noted.
In his abstract, he cited that a total of 2.5 quintillion terabytes of
data were generated every day in 2012 alone, and it is estimated
that as much data is now generated in just two days as was
created from the dawn of civilization until 2003.
He noted the potentials of managing big data for personalized
medicine and smart health strategies in the near future.
USAID-STRIDE VISITING PROFESSOR DR. OSCAR MANUEL UY
DELIVERED a series of lectures on the various applications of JMP
Statistical Software for data exploration, design of experiments,
and data analytics.
Uy is the Principal Professional Chemist and Statistician at the
Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory and was
with DLSU for three weeks to assist faculty members and students
in improving research output quality.
In addition, Uy engaged in consultative meetings with 10
different research groups from DLSU colleges. The Energy
and Environmental Systems Research Group of the Center for
Engineering & Sustainable Development Research coordinated
the meetings, while the University Research Coordination Office
coordinated his lecture series.
He also assisted the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation,
Dr. Raymond R. Tan, in developing long-term research strategies
for the University.
IN SUPPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY’S RESEARCH GOALS and
to encourage more research endeavors among members of
the Academic Service Faculty (ASF), the University Research
Coordination Office recently launched the ASF Research Writing
Fellowship.
The fellowship is designed to provide selected ASF fellows with an
opportunity to work with top researchers in the University through
a mentorship program. They will work with their assigned mentors
for three months, the duration of the fellowship.
The first workshop was held last March 16-17, with the first 13
fellows giving a brief talk on their working papers. They will present
their final, publishable manuscripts at the culminating activity
scheduled in May.
