Police officers should always be strong and
confident at work. Resilience and self-confidence
help them to perform more effectively.
Training and coaching programmes can offer
police officers tools and insights that will help
strengthen their professional resilience. The
Police Academy has developed the Mental
Strength training programme to help increase
mental resilience. In light of the National
Reinforcement Programme for Professional
Resilience, Mental Strength will be the top
training programme offered to Dutch police
officers over the next few years.
The starting point for the Mental Strength training programme is
a police officer’s mental shield. This shield is based on three
pillars: challenge, control and self-confidence. It is built on a
strong foundation of professionalism and resilience. The Police
Academy aims to help these professionals strengthen this
foundation.
The police officers go through several stages during the training
programme. At the start of the programme, they will gain insight
into how they deal with difficult situations. They will look at their
own experiences and then apply the knowledge gained to their
everyday work in the police force. Subsequently, they will engage
in interactive teaching methods, discussions on theory and
practical exercises, all of which are based on the pillars of
challenge, control and self-confidence.
The participants will receive a ‘mental toolbox’. Police officers
will be able to increase their own mental strength by using
components from this toolbox in their daily work.
During the Mental Strength programme, the police officers will
discover the following with regard to their professional resilience:
1. new and alternative aspects of behaviour;
2. personal capacities and qualities: learning to perform
effectively, a mental toolbox that contains skills, as well as
expanding their comfort zone and increasing self-confidence.
The mental toolboxThe participants will receive a mental toolbox which is based on
the model of the mental shield. The challenge, control and self-
confidence pillars are divided further into six components which
will help to further increase mental strength. The police officers
will experience the results of the Mental Shield training programme
when using the components from their toolbox in their police
work. The toolbox consists of the following components:
Challenge
• Settinggoals
• Visualization
Control
• Energymanagement
• Attentionalcontrol
Confidence
• Action-reflection
• Thoughtcontrol
The Mental Strength training programme takes three days plus
one QA day. The trainers will be available for guidance and
coaching in the period between the end of the training
programme and the QA day.
